You really need to compare this side-by-side with the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8, which is almost $2000 cheaper. OK, it's not quite as insanely wide, but the reviews I've seen say it's savagely sharp, corner to corner, throughout its zoom range.
@andrewclifton4294 жыл бұрын
@@AR-vf7vg I think Tony has a long-standing disdain for third party lenses. However, after I tried out the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 I sold my Sony GM lens, because the Sigma just smoked it, in my judgement (and a lot of reviewers agree). And it's much cheaper, of course!
@andrewclifton4294 жыл бұрын
@@AR-vf7vg I own the 105mm F1.4 and the 35mm F1.2 - and I'm very happy with both of them. One of my favourite Sigma primes though is the hugely under-rated 45mm F2.8, which is (shockingly, for Sigma!) really small and compact, making it great for street photography. I have some Sony lenses too, of course - but in many cases, it pays to check out what Sigma and Tamron have to offer, before spending a whole lot more!
@andrewclifton4294 жыл бұрын
@@AR-vf7vg Thanks! Yes, the voigtlander 65mm and macro apo-lanthars are both amazing - Razor sharp and the best control of CA you'll ever see. My favourite Sony lenses right now are the 24mm f1/.4, the 90mm f2.8 Macro and the 200-600mm tele.

@@AR-vf7vg Yes, the 135 GM is excellent, but I don't really need that focal length and I'm very happy with the Sigma 105/1.4!
@andrewclifton4294 жыл бұрын
@whole27 Second question first: the closer the subject to the camera, the blurrier your background will get at any focal length - but of course, this is most obvious when shooting at wide apertures, like f2.8 or less. The Sony 16-35 mm f2.8 GM is a great lens, but it's big, heavy and very expensive. Personally, for vlogging I'd recommend using prime lenses as you tend to get higher quality for less money. I'd suggest around 24mm as the sweet spot for vlogging - and my top recommendation would be the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM. It's sharper and faster than the 16-35 mm, and about $1000 cheaper too. If you still want to spend some of that $1000 I'd suggest getting a budget-price 15mm or 18mm lens for some super-wide shots - nice if you want to shoot yourself skateboarding or whatever, and get in lots of dramatic background. But you'll probably find yourself using the 24mm 90% of the time. I hope this helps!
@Lofote4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but the thing with the α7-III and "go with the f4 it is ok enough" is just bs: I tested it and corner sharpness was horrible and nonusable, wheres as the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 was extremely sharp already at f2.8. Don't think that 24MP is not much. It is far more than you think and far more than enough to show huge weaknesses.

Thanks for the comparison of the 12-24mm F4. While I appreciate good glass and have a few GMaster lenses, carting the extra weight with the extra price tag means the 12-24mm f2.8 would not get in the bag as often. As it is, the 12-24mm F4, 35mm f1.8, 24mm f.14 GM, 50mm Voigtlander APO f2 (yup, weird pick), and 135mm f1.8 GM makes a perfect kit for me personally. Thanks for the review and comparison. I'm kinda obsessed with this lens. It seems like a true do-it-all ultrawide that can handle practically anything that type of glass is meant for. It's clearly not for everybody; either of the others or the Sigma 14-24 will be perfectly fine for the vast majority of folks. But for those who shoot in that range in a variety of ways (and have the dough to spare), I can see them paying for that degree of versatility. For the first time ever, you don't have to choose between the extra range or the brighter aperture in a zoom. That's something.

Very nice review, I really enjoyed how thorough you were with the comparisons and features. Quick question though. You make a big deal out of the fact that you don't get paid for the review or accept free gear. However, you also stated that you hadn't purchased this and you get the gear from the manufacturer early to be able to post to the embargo date. So How do you get the gear but didn't pay for it if you don't accept free gear? Not trying to be a nit about this but I think it would be great if you could explain the process a bit and ease more concerns. I am genuinely curious about this. Thanks for all the great work you do.
@anthonyc18834 жыл бұрын
It's almost certainly a lens that needs to be returned. Sony puts these lenses in the hands of reviewers but the reviewers don't get to keep them. Therefore, Tony isn't accepting free gear.
@jbloom41724 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyc1883 And yet he got the lens for free and from a Vendor which implies he is on their good side. DJI will not send him free gear because he is no on their good side. I get how it works but it is still free gear to use and review. Also I did not see anywhere that he mentioned that the lens was provided by Sony (Usually reviewers say where they got it). I just think it would be interesting to hear this discussed.
@anthonyc18834 жыл бұрын
@@jbloom4172 I don't think a vendor supplied the lens. Adorama and Amazon, to use just two examples, are only taking waitlist orders because the product won't be available for more than a month. Sure, it would be good if the video stated "Manufacturer-supplied sample for review purposes only." Are you suggesting reviewers should personally purchase each piece of gear they review, in order to be iron-clad independent? That'd be very hard for so many reviewers because they don't have the budgets of Northrup, DP Review and others. Plus, hot new products also take a very long time before enough of them are in the pipeline. I don't need or care to stick up for Tony, but you stated DJI won't send him anything because he is not on their good side, so doesn't that indicate he is not afraid to offend a manufacturer if he doesn't like their product? I think the affiliate links are more eyebrow-raising than accepting a lens for review and having to send it back, probably pretty quickly, too. I know these reviewers have to make money, but the affiliate links to me are more suspicious than reviewing a lens that you aren't allowed to keep.
@jbloom41724 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyc1883 I think maybe you are missing the point but your statements support my question. He states very clearly in the video that we can expect fair and unbiased reviews because they never accept free gear. I don't have any problem with a reviewer getting an item for free to review it. I don't have a problem with a reviewer even getting to keep the item. I do think they should reveal how they got the equipment though. Personally I don't even mind if they are paid for the review. It's all about transparency. All I am saying is that I think it would be interesting if Tony were to talk about how that works. I would be curious to learn more about how they get stuff and how long they can keep it and etc... I just though the statements were a little incongruous and would like to hear the story from the horses mouth as it were. I have a lot of respect for Tony and this is in no way meant to be a slam or a takedown or something else. Merely my own curiosity and interest in hearing the story.

Rode VideoGo+ or something like that. I literally threw it in the trash while editing this video. Piece of crap.

Great very informative lens comparison video. Been kicking the tires on all three lenses and you confirmed my choice. 16-35 gm it is.

It's good to see Sony pushing the envelope in lens design for once, rather than just copying other proven designs. As a canon user, I would love to see them up the ante with a 11-24 f/2.8 or something similarly groundbreaking.

Sony provide new released lenses to various professionals for tests and reviews. What happens to theses lenses after returnded? Do Sony repacked and sells as new to the public?

In Turkey, we was wondering, how it will be. Thank you for this great review Tony.

Suggested 1. For filters use Sony Playmemories app Digital Filter on Mark ii and below bodies (if someone could just ask Sony to put apps on the Mark iii and above frames) 2. Put a Lenscoat on the lens, For Astro people you are out at night and early season Feb. Mar. and Apr. in the cold will help keep the lens warmer. For protection and extra weatherproofing, ever do a MW at 2 deg.F in snow need I say more!! Lenscoat currently does not make one for the f/2.8 or f/4 but will if enough ask!!

Nothing says "Our Lady Of Peace" like a fence and razor wire, eh?

I had exactly the same thought. The irony is priceless!
@manuelp74724 жыл бұрын
I second that. Razor wires are one of the worst kinds of "fences" to keep someone out or in. They are extremely dangerous and hurtful, if you get caught up in them.

Use a little common sense! People are destructive and to build things like that is expensive! Razor wire is cost effective vandalism prevention.

Maybe, but it speaks to the heart of a religion which has been nothing but a cover for slavery, mass murder, rape, land theft, pillaging, rape, colonisation and pedophilia for over two thousand years.

@@PropDusting Yeah, I know, I know, people are gonna vandalize anything they can get their hands on. But you gotta admit, the optics aren't great.
