Totally agree with you when you said : know yourself. This is the advice to know before spending money on gear since photography/filmmaking is an expensive hobby. I personally prioritize gear for landscape photography. And I think that the wider, the better, and the cheaper the better, because I don't need this fast AF. So, in my case I will go with the sigma 16-28

Of the two, I would prefer Sony except that in the rather close-up video shots of the yours face, I noticed that introduces a certain deformation, a bit like comparing a portrait taken with a 50mm. and an 85 mm., so my favorite is Tamron

Super helpful! You would really help me in my decision making process if you could compare the Tamron 20-40 with the Sony 20 f1.8 ha,ha! I did look at the Sony 16-35PZ in the store and didn't care for the physical look of it so passed. I am wishing to replace my Tamron 17-28 as I find it too restrictive on the long end .

Thank you for the comparison, Although I shoot more photo than video, I still get the Sony 16-35 G (just few days ago), Simply the build quality of sony is much better, and sony doesn't extend when zoom in or out. Tamron only have one year warranty here in my country, while Sony got 2 years, which makes it even better. I could live with F4 since I don't do lots of night shooting, (just change to a cheap prime lens at night will do) The only down side of Sony for me would probably the 72mm filter thread, so far the biggest one on hand is 67mm. Live the moment, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for comparing two lenses. Another important feature for me is stabilization when using Active Stabilization. I heard that Tamron lens does not work well with a7IV Active Stabilization.

Low light performance will be always better using Primes and if you have a7siii or similar cams, F4 is not a problem for dusk situations. Great video and comparison! Always 👍 Bro

Prime is obviously quite limiting, you would use it if you have no acceptable zoom alternative. Wide angle zoom lenses are great for indoors, and in many cases you can get away with f/2.8, but f/4 can be a big problem. It's not like you take all shots at the same ISO, you will have a continuous range, like during my last shoot I had ISOs from 320 to 51200 at the same restaurant. Above certain point (say ISO 12800) your pictures start degrading significantly. You well may have 10% of such pictures with f/2.8 lens and 50% with f/4 lens or 80% with f/5.6 lens, etc. Even f/8 lens can be used for something. So it's not like a slow lens is totally useless, you just end up with fewer good pictures at the end. Knowing that at f/4 a lot of pictures will fall off the cliff, I would never take such a lens for indoor parties. For me both 17-28 and 20-40 Tamrons are a lot more useful than Sony.

Thank you for the comparison. Great video and great job describing the differences. I have the Tamron 17-28 and just got a 20-40 tester from Tamron. I am thinking of letting the 17-28 go. I like the range and the feel of the 20-40. However, it misses focus on my A7RIV. At f2.8 there is a noticeable difference in sharpness in the corners between 20mm and 40mm. 20mm is much sharper. I did not expect to see that. I am a still photographer with occasional video projects. I have to find out what the deal is with this autofocus not being on target. I am having the same issue with my 150-500 and the tester 50-400 I borrowed from Tamron. My 28-75 G2, 70-180 and 70-300 have no issues with autofocus at all. Anyone else experiencing focus miss issues? Thanks.

@@AlexCruzHaha I am sending the tester 20-40 back this week. I am totally happy with the sharpness results. The only thing is that I noticed, from time to time, it misses critical focus (sharpness) for some reason. I think it is my A7RIV body rather than the lens. I may hang on to my 17-28 a little longer as there is rumor of a 20-70 Sony. That would be the ultimate travel lens for me. I am in no hurry to make the switch and will wait for the next few months. As far as 20-40 as a better choice for street photography vs. 17-28, you are absolutely right, it is better as the range is more useful, especially on the longer end.

I have a bunch of primes, so not really worried about the difference in aperture. Despite the price difference, I prefer the Sony for photography work mostly due to one feature I have come to love....the aperture ring. When I had my Canon 6D, I loved using the Tamron primes and long zooms, but since switching to Sony, the Tamron 28-75 didn't excite me with its image quality....and now I am a bit biased against Tamron.

I think you described my point when I talk about tamron having this nicer feel than other lenses in this video, when you talked about sharpness. these newer tamrons have these charcter and I love it for video as well as for photo. Tamron is 1200 EUR, Sony GM is almost 3,000 EUR and offers only slightly better optics compared to Tamron 20-40. I have only Zeiss, Voigtlander and GM glass but in the case of 16-35 lenses, the Tamron 20-40 is clearly a better choice.

I just got that Tamron 20mm-40mm for my Ronin RS3 and to be honest that is probably the perfect lens for a gimbal. No wires no nothing and the gimbal is so powerful that it doesn't matter at all for the balance of the gimbal when you zoom in and out. The zoom distance is just so short on that Tamron. I can't think of a better gimbal lens really.
