Jared Spink I just ordered the Sigma 16mm 1.4 contemporary lens for my a6400. I believe this lens will live on my camera 90% of time time. I do plan on buying the 18-105 G series lens though. Sold my Canon 70-200 f2.8 is USM and 17-55 f2.8 is and 60d and buying Sony a6400 with 18-105 f4. Needed to downsize to be able to carry it with my growing family. Couldn't haul all the canon gear and 3 kids anymore.

If you need a wide angel go with the 16. If you need a versatile lens for with the 18-105. Really depends what your shooting or filming.

ILLminded Vinzon you’ll absolutely love it! I bought a metabones adapter so I could use my Nikon lenses on my a6400, didn’t even need it because the 18-105 lives on my camera. It’s awesome!

With the aps-c crop factor of the 18-105mm lens being equivalent to 157mm . Would this lens be good enough to film football from the sideline ?

Yeah it will but it’s an aps-c lens so you’d have to switch your a7ii to crop mode which kinda sucks because your now using the whole sensor. So it will work but I don’t recommend it.

i have a question! i watched alot of videos about this lense and they all say it has a fixed aperture (the widest) f/4. i still can go ti higher aperture in manual mode right? f/5,8,11 i’m still learning how to use aperture/shutter speed and iso and also trying to understand the differences between lenses i would be grateful to get an answer from you ❤️

Yes of course you can go to higher apertures. I wouldn’t say this is a fixed aperture but a constant aperture meaning at its widest of f4, it won’t change as you zoom if you don’t want it too.

Jared - how would you compare this to the Sony FE 24-105?

Well thats a full frame lens. Would for sure go with that if you’re on a full frame. If you’re on a APS-C i’d say go with the 18-105 since it’s made for a cropped sensor. I’d only go with the 24-105 if you plan on upgrading to a Sony full frame in the future, it won’t be as wide as the 18-105 on a crop sensor though.

This is an APS-C lens not a full frame lens. But technically you could mount it on a Sony full frame and put the camera in APS-C mode but I’d recommend a full frame lens.

Yes. The 18-105 can have a constant aputure. The 18-135 is actually a variable aperture at 3.5-5.6

I chose the 18-105 for the ability to have a constant aperture through the whole range.

Yes you'll need an ND. Get a Variable ND so you can adjust the strength as needed. I use the the 2-5 stop from polar pro.

How it compares to 18-135mm lens. I am from India and the prize of sony alpha a6400 with 18-135mm lens is around $1362.64 and the prize of body is around $933.62 This meaning if I go with 18-105mm lens then the whole package will be of $1500. So does giving $200 more justify

Yeah I agree with G.S. I think you’ll find you’ll grow out of the 55-210 fairly quickly and want something faster. When possible, always get the better glass.

I got it. It feels very nice because of metal and the zoom/focus rings are also mate out of metal and are smooth af. Very sharp but some distortion - but you can correct it with Lightroom. After all would I only get one lense fo sony alpha 6xxx it would be this lense.

I keep contemplating getting this lens. Everyone loves it, but I love how the 16-50 kit lens looks at 16mm, and that's at f3.5, and I have the Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS Lens as well, which is an awesome lens and so... I don't know. I wish there was a 23mm f1.4 or 1.8 for the a6400 so I could have a prime for true 35mm. I've been thinking about the Sigma 56mm as well... But no OSS... And so... Maybe this 18-105 is my best option to round out my kit. Also considering the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Might be worth the extra $200 for that better low light performance. Hmmm... Awesome review. I would keep it. I have this lens and the sigma 30mm 1.4 on my a6300 and its a great combo. I mainly do street and portrait photography.

85mm is amazing. Just sold mine and opted to just use my 70-200 for anything I would have used the 85 for, but that's on my Photography camera. The Sony I use for video mostly and this lens is great for that and still allows me to do great photos if I just want to carry one camera.

85mm is a beautiful lens for portrait photography and can come in handy for video work as well.

good video ... I have that lens for video work as well, mostly on the a6400 ... even works great on the A7rIII in APS-C mode ... for photo work, results are a bit boring but I prefer prime lenses for that, so there you go ;) ... The only real problem with that lens is, that it has some very odd and noticeable distortion especially quite a bit pincushion distortion at the end of the zoom range ... so if you lens firmware or you camera firmware is not up to date or you do not have lens compensation / correction activated, it will result in some odd looking footage for certain zoom ranges ... also you might see a odd image distortion while zooming fast while the camera is compensation the lens distortion... Also, even with the latest firmware on the lens and my Sony F7 the lens correction does not work with that camera for some reason, so keep that in mind... but overall a very nice versatile lens, especially for the money.

Hi - A great video and I can see you put a lot of thought into it. The only thing I don't get is the look of your video. Man, where is the contrast and colour? - Ok I can see it might be trendy to shoot raw and recover in post, but in my opinion, you haven't recovered it. It's like you have invested all the money and time and then thrown it all away. To prove what I am saying, take a look at your title sequence with the deep blue ocean which is just beautiful. Then you return to a washed out look. Maybe it's me?
