I’ve been digging short zooms starting at 24 mm since the Panasonic LX3 of 2008 (24-60 mm). People don’t realise how useful they are. This new lens looks great. The f/2.8 speed accentuates the full-frame look. It’s not gonna look like an iPhone snap. For me personally, I think I might like an f/4 24-50 mm even better, because that could be properly small - maybe 300 grams or something. But then you’d def need a fast prime in the bag. This f/2.8 zoom can really replace primes in many cases. Sony is killing it with the lenses though. The old optical giants like Nikon and Canon just aren’t hitting the same notes.

And that’s how different a photographer’s needs can be. To me, f/4 is just a bewildering concept and I’d opt for a wider aperture over zoom range any day of the week. But I’m glad manufacturers make such different lenses so that there’s something for pretty much everybody!

For NYC street travel on A7cii or A7CR would you use either that and 85 1.8 or would you take Sony 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G or 35 2.8 with 85 1.8 with you, for street do you prefer ligher/smaller on camera or to switch lenses? Also would you wait for the A7V instead because the A7Cii sensor is a 2021 sensor left over from the A7IV?

Thank you for the video. While I have many lenses including the 24-70/2.8 GM II that I think is better for events I’m attracted to this for my Compact “C” bodies. Currently trying the small G primes but this now covers 24, 28, 35, and 50mm focal lengths. And as Mark Galers video shows it’s actually lighter than those three primes in the bag. I think I will consider getting one.

I just bought a A7CR and I mainly take travel and street photos. At the moment, I am using my old APSC Sony 16-55 2.8 in APSC mode and I wish to buy some full frame lenses. I am interested in this lens and the new Sony 16-25 2.8. It will be a nice travel photography combo. I have tried them both in Sony showroom and I like them both. Then, an idea suddenly come up in my mind, i.e. if I get the 16-35 2.8 GMII instead, then the only focal range difference between the GMII and the two G lenses is 35-50mm. I can use APSC mode or the clear image zoom function on the GMII to reach the 50mm. That will cover the entire16-50mm range provided by these two G lenses. If I need to take portrait photo, I can add a 50mm 1.4(use APSC mode or the clear image zoom can achieve a 85mm 1.8) lens or a 85 1.8 to my combo and I can have a true potrait lens instead of using the long end of the 24-50 2.8. Wouldn't it be more flexible and useful than the two G lenses combo?

I have the a7C II and it is soo hard to choose between this and the upcoming Sigma 24-70 Art II. I mean, logically this 24-50 is probably the better option because of the size and weight on the C II but they are the same price where I live and it is soo tempting to go for the Sigma. I will probably be using the wide-end more than the tele end and the thing is, with the 24-50 being fully extended at 24mm, it is basically the same size as the Sigma.

Nice review that focuses on what you find important rather than test charts. I don't know how LR works as I've never tried it but Darktable can either use an existing user-created correction profile (lensfun) or use the profile built into the raw image. I'm guessing either that LR can't or that pre-production lenses don't supply a built-in correction profile.

I’m a bit of a prime snob, so super biased. I haven’t even owned a zoom lens in a long time. But I have the suspicion I’d enjoy using a compact zoom with a decent aperture. I’m just not wowed by f/2.8 on the wide end - I either use something much wider or stop down to f/4 or more; don’t have much use for the look that 2.8. gives you. Also... aaaagh, it’s just a little bigger than I’d like. Sure, it’s small. It’s probably as small as Sony could get away with. But simply in terms of handling and feel I’d probably prefer a prime over this zoom, even though obviously only a zoom is truly flexible and limitation isn’t always what you need for being creative. I’ve become so extreme when it comes to lens size that I got the Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 even though I explained why the aperture doesn’t seem all that useful to me. But the size makes it fit in the pocket of a jacket and to me, that’s what the A7C is all about in the first place. I love it so much for that!

Well if you take a moment to look at my channel you’ll see most of my videos are centered around the A7C line of cameras so that’s why I did. As for everyone else’s reason, I can’t speak for them. Sony does not tell us what to say nor have any control over what we say. I only shoot with the A7C cameras for Photography so that’s the perspective I try to bring to the table. I’m not apart of a secret discord where we all decided this lens is only good for the A7CII & A7CR. I also have an FX3 and I admit this lens would be quite fantastic on it. Quite similar focal range to the iconic Sigma 18-35, but I’m a photographer, not videographer so I didn’t care to bring it up.
