Sony 2x Teleconverter Product Review | Does it really degrade image quality and auto focus?

Thanks. I have the both the 2X and 1.4X extenders and the IQ is most agreeable. I use it with my 70-200mm GM and my 200-600mm G lens for my A9 and A7RIV. BTW I am a professional of over 45 years in the business. Pros do use these teleconverters too.

@Sam Ib Sony teleconverters only work on 600mm F4 GM, 400mm F2.8 GM, 70-200mm F2.8 GM, 100-400mm GM, and 200-600 G. White converter color goes on white lenses except 70-200 F4 G.

good job buddy! but I think next time make close-up (of a bird or with something that has fine details) photos with both converters. Only those kinds of shots would allow you to see the difference, not the shots of the landscapes. ;)

Great video! Informative . I have a qns… Does the tc improves the bokeh and compression of the image? Or simply a crop into the original focal length. Keen to know that before I put my money into these. 🙂

I didn’t really analyze to that level but if I’m not wrong, it doesn’t just crop in. I think it actually makes it 140-400mm. The compression does look different. As for bokeh, because it’s from 2.8 to 5.6, but from 200mm to 400mm I think it “even things out”

Fun Fuck: As long as you won't print your image as large as an A4 paper, image degradation don't exist. The only way you see degradation is when you zoom in or print the image as large as your house's roof. In summary, if your image is only for social media everything is fine, anyway as soon as you upload an image its automatically degraded by 70% lol!

were you able to shoot in low light situations? I fear is loosing two stops on my 200-600 and shooting around dusk and dawn when most wildlife is active.

If you’re using the f2.8, I think it’s still acceptable. Unless you’re shooting with the 100-400 or the 200-600, then I would not recommend it. And having the a7siii really helps hahaha

Hey 👋 thanks! Anyways, at f5.6, I think it’s good enough for low light. But the af for sports might not be as reliable. I would say it would still perform decently but you’re probably better off with the 100-400 😁

Giorgi Shermazanashvili nope I don’t recommend it with the 200-600 lens. What I meant was that if you’re constantly at 400mm with this 2x teleconverter, it’s better to just buy the 200-600mm lens instead. 😁

Hi, I am using a7riv, is it will affect the AF performance after using 2x converter, I wish to go for 70-200 GM II, and use 2x convertor to reach the performance as 100-400 GM lens .. how is the performance rate .. need advise .. thanks

hi. In my experience, using that combination will give you decent results but don't expect it to perform like the 100-400. There will be a slight drop in performance but I think the versatility and cost savings is worth it. You want to shoot wildlife?

@@george33cn landscape then you definitely don’t have to worry about the slight drop in AF Performance. IQ drop is barely noticeable in my opinion. I have a comparison video comparing the Lens, 1.4x and 2x tele.

I used both the A7III and R3. In theory your AF should be better. Perhaps it's the subject you are shooting? I realized if it's faster and smaller subjects it struggles to keep up as compared to what I photographed. Also, are you using the 70-200 or?

Bernard Lau I used it for surfing but even when they are not moving it doesn't focus. Images look awful. I'll try again.

for me its a bit more risky with a 55 to 210 lens but 4.5-6.3 api. so i will lose allot of light. since i don't got a 2.8 like you

It won't even fit on a 55-210mm. Besides: 55-210 is a crop-factor lens, so it is effectively a 83-315mm lens.
