Absolutely loved your perspective on the f/4 zoom lenses! It’s great to see someone highlight the practicality of lightweight gear without sacrificing versatility. I’ve always preferred the flexibility of f/4 zooms, paired with primes for low-light situations, rather than lugging around heavy f/2.8 lenses everywhere. Your video really validated my approach. Thank you for sharing this!

I haven’t taken the 20-70 off of my camera for almost a year now. I still have my sigma 24-70, which produces better photos and has better contrast, but with that lens I would occasionally need to switch over to an 18mm for wider shots. Most of my video work is stopped down to f/4-f/11 anyways, so there really isn’t much of a downside to the slower aperture. It also works for near-macro. Just an incredible video lens overall, and weighs half as much as my 2.8 standard zoom. It doesn’t cure my gear acquisition syndrome, but it is effective treatment.
@NathanBuildsRobots

I will say that if I ever had to do high frame rate video in low light I’d maybe switch over, but filming everything at 24fps, you really don’t need more light. 1/50th of a second exposure lets in a ton of light

Great review and your video is full of art. So dope. I was convinced with your Tamron 2.8 lens. Hence i went to buy 24-50mm lens. I already had this 20-70mm and later had PZ 16-35mm. These are all great lenses. But i need to experience the 2.8 lens and i'm grateful with your two reviews on Tamron. May be once i'm done with FE 24-50mm i would go back to 20-70mm. that ultra wide and extra reach are really versatile for run n gun situation. Thank you for inspiring me.

Thank you. I am not a video shooter so my needs are different. I’ve recently started using the two newer Sony compact C bodies of the A7CII and A7CR for travel so smaller lenses have attracted me away from my GM primes and GMII holy trinity. I consider the 20-70/4 G but decided to try the newer 16-25/2.8 G and 24-50/2.8 G instead. Different trade-offs but I still may try a 20-70/4 G since I like its flexible focal range. T also looks ideal to pair with the FE 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II. Another smaller size, for its focal range, telephoto zoom. All great offerings. Take care.

Love the way you made this video, great job. I recently got Sigma 24-70 mark II and I love it so much. the bokeh and low light capability is two big factor that separate smart phone vs mirrorless cameras especially on social medias which uploaded videos low bitrate won't show that much sharpness of cameras. so I decided to have F2.8 on my priority for choosing a zoom lens. maybe I'd buy a 85 f1.4 in future as well.

Thank you very much! Depth is all about layering. I often compose my shots in a way where I have a visible foreground layer. This could be people, plants, even furniture. genuine question. Is the 24-105 just as good as the 20-70? and would you choose the 24-105 over the tamron 28-75 considering you took the 20-70 over the tamron. i’m so close to buying either of these lenses so i need opinion
@MarcelGlas
@MarcelGlas Ай бұрын
All three lenses are great in my opinion. Personally I vastly prefer the 20-70 over the other two though. The image from the 24-105 isn't as sharp as the 20-70's and it has worse performance when it comes to chromatic abberation. The 20-70 also has superior AF performance, is smaller and lighter. Both Sony lenses have superior image stabilization compared to the Tamron but the 24-105's optical steady shot isn't necessary for the work I do, so it's not a factor for me. Like I've said in the video, the 20mm at the wide end is a game changer for my projects since I don't need to get a dedicated wide angle lens and can basically do almost anything with my 20-70. The 24-105's zoom range also isn't as clear of a winner to me since I can crop in on the 20-70 with clear image zoom. Hope this helps!

@MarcelGlas
@MarcelGlas 2 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot friend! I really like the Tamron because it's tiny and perfect for travel. However, if you're asking me about professional use I'd recommend the 20-70mm f/4 without a doubt. The 20-70 has significantly better auto focus, smoother bokeh, way better stabilization (due to being a first party lens), it's still small and light and offers a more useful zoom range for most situations. That said it is clearly more expensive. If you can afford it or plan to make money with it, the 20-70mm will likely suit you better. If you want something small for travel or for fun, the Tamron is a good option.

Exactly. Depending on the project I may also use a modded Helios 44-2 or Super Takumar 28mm vintage lens but I've decided to minimize my lens collection as much as possible.

Okay so I've been looking around online and apparently this lens isn't a true parfocal. For clear image zoom maybe it looks like that but for the actual zoom ring ive been seeing it go out of focus but the shift back to focus is very quick
@MarcelGlas
@MarcelGlas Ай бұрын
Check Gerald Undone's review for this. If you have autofocus enabled while zooming even a parfocal lens may jump a bit, depending on the situation. Testing for parfocalness is done in manual focus. And my copy, just as Gerald's shows the same results. Hope this helps 🙌

Well this is exactly the point I was talking about in the video, no? People are looking at their lenses out of context but if you own a slower zoom lens as well as a fast prime lens for low light shots, you can film just about anything. This doesn't mean that the zoom lens has to have a fast aperture as well.

I'm glad you were able to find gear that suits your needs, and it's quite obvious that you are relatively new in this occupation (that comment about watching movies is a glaring example) but you need to relax, dude. You "discovered" one of the most used focal lengths from one of the most popular brands, and the thing about Soviet lenses is widely known for a decent amount of years now. No need to be so over the top with your "discoveries". Because as time passes, you will learn more and more things, and when you get to a certain point, you will become aware that there is so much more to learn, so much that you don't know. The more i know, the more i realize i know nothing, that's how the saying goes. Point being, you made few findings that work for you, great. Don't let hubris get the better of you, as soon you start thinking how perfect your work is, that's the moment your decline starts. In this work, you can always do better, and there is always someone better.

Something in this video got you on an emotional level, else you wouldn't have taken the time to write a lengthy comment like this. Not sure what made you believe I view my opinions as facts or why I'd need to "relax" after offering an alternative perspective on gear which isn't driven by monetary gain, unlike the majority of filmmaking KZbin. Also not sure why you reiterate the word "discoveries" as if I had presented my points as some hidden truths. Then again, ironic to be accusing people of hubris while simultaneously implying you've got all the answers.
