I had the 70-200 F4 and i decided to upgrade, i definitely do not regret my decision. I agree with everything in this video but the f4 vs f2.8 is what made me switch, i love shooting low light. The IQ seems better imo also, sharper, more contrast, and less haze when the subject is backlit Great video you earned a new sub!
@MartinNemeth4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jimmy! That's the case. If you are shooting a lot in low light than the Gmaster is your best choice. When I was starting with the Sony system, I bought the F4, because I was not using the 70-200 that often. However the F2.8 and smaller minimal focus distance is a big thing now for me :)
@WayanSam3 жыл бұрын
totally agree. im looking to upgrade after testing the 2.8 a few yrs ago in a japan camera shop. the quality and IQ is streets ahead of the f4. This video doesnt give justice to the 2.8. But great video nonetheless. Sub’d as well.

I went with the GM for many reasons: 1) Low light event photography 2) I can add the 1.4x TC so that I can have a 280mm f/4 3) The tripod foot is interchangeable with my 100-400 GM which I replaced with a Kirk foot that also accommodates for the QD socket for rapid removal of the strap for tripod usage 4) Constant close focusing instead of variable 5) I already have 77mm filters which I prefer over stepdown rings 6) Helps me workout my arms 😛
@MartinNemeth4 жыл бұрын
Nice choice :). That's what I had in mind. GM is better for people who are using it for reasons :) However for people who just would like to have 70-200 just in case, I would recommend getting the cheaper F4 and invest the price difference in something else :). But anyway, great choice :)

I shoot with the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens... Regarding the lens hood: I replaced the OEM lens hood with a generic round screw-in hood which provides equal protection against flair and bumps but, allows me to rotate a CPL by simply rotating the hood. Regarding the Tripod ring: I replaced the OEM tripod ring with an eBay ring that includes an Arca Convertible foot; negating the need for a seperate A/C adapter between my A/C tripod clamp and the lens...

The f.4 has more contrast, as story learned, Rolleiflex with Planar 2,8 was a perfect lens but less contrast than the brother 3,5, so the modern zoom, the f.2,8 are bigger and heavier than the f.4, with more shallow depth of field, soft and detailed. Personally I prefer the contrast of the f.4 considering I use always prime lenses and the 70/200, 3 or 4 time per year ( Canon EF f.4 IS + Sigma MC11 )

Interesting review where you confirmed exactly what I think since a while... I purchased the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS and the FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS istead of the f/2.8 relatives and with the price difference (actually even less), I prefered to add the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/1.4 lenses for the situations where I really need a bigger aperture !!! That choice has two huge advantages... 1. The f/4 lenses are lighter and more compact which is the purpose of using small mirrorless bodies ! 2. If I need more than f/4... f/1.4 is better than f/2.8 !!!! Extra bonus... These 4 lenses are cheaper than the two f/2.8 GM ones ;-) And these Sigma Art primes are simply absolutely AMAZING !!! Only my opinion but I think it makes sense ?!
@MartinNemeth4 жыл бұрын
Great choice in my opinion. I don't have experiences with SIGMA lenses, but I want to try the Art series in near future. So far I have only native SONY / ZEISS glass.
@rga664 жыл бұрын
@@MartinNemeth When I was in need of a fast 50mm I wanted the Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 but didn't have the budget at that moment... So I decided to purchase the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 and later, sell it and get the Zeiss when the budget would be available ! But using the Sigma made me realise that it was as good or even better as the Zeiss... At least for sharpness and rendering ! Since then I'm a huge Sigma Art fan and honestly, If I'm still a Sony Alpha shooter it's because of the Sigma Art line and all that absolute amazing glass ! 50 and 105mm f/1.4 are two beasts... The 85mm f/1.4 is among the sharpest lenses ever seen and the 135mm f/1.8 is also absolutely magnificent. But in my case, my next Sigma Art prime will be the 35mm f/1.2 !!! ;-) Their zooms, 14-24 and 24-70mm f/2.8 are also fantastics peaces of glass ! No need to pay double for GM lenses for having amazing results with the amazing Sony Full Frame sensors ;-) I'll puchase only two GM lenses in the near future... The 70-200 f/2.8 GM for Pro shootings, like weddings, portrait or event type shoots, like concerts... And the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM for wildlife and aviation photography !!! But I'll keep going witn my two f/4 lenses for daily and travel photography, because the 24-105 and the 70-200 f/4 are absolute must have and I was never disapointed by them ! I also love my tiny 28mm f/2 for some occasions and it fits in my "Go Bag" all the time because it's so small and lightweight (and cheap) !

One major difference is that only the f2.8 allows you to use the teleconverters if that's important to you. Differences in image quality would probably show up in backlit scenarios when controlling flare is crucial and in the amount of contrast, and also in the corner sharpness. Both of these are important in landscape photography. But even in those scenarios there is not a huge difference.

Hi Martin, The price of Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens has come down to $1300, so would you still recommend Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 that sells for $1200. Earlier the Sony one was more expensive so people preferred Tamron 70-180, but what's the verdict now? I am considering it for my Landscape Photography.
@MartinNemeth3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rajat. Unfortunately, I have no experiences with the Tamron. They’re pretty close in price, which means you will save only $100. In this case I may still go for the native Sony glass. The 70-200 f4 is a solid glass for sure. My advice would be this: If possible, I would rent both lenses at the same time for a day or two and I would shoot some test comparison shots. If low light is what you are going after (mainly for video) maybe Tamron will be the way to go. For landscape photography, you can set the camera to the tripod and use longer exposure. I mean, that F4 should not be an issue even in low light for this purpose. Anyway. Your best option is to rent them before purchasing. :)

The G-master is justified when shooting any moving person or object, such as sports, and definetely indoor sports or sports in non-ideal lighting. This because of the f2.8 ofc but also it is for me much more tack on AF than the f4.0. For me it was therefore worth the extra money to upgrade from my previous f4 to the 2.8 G-master.
@MartinNemeth4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanx for stopping by :) Yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind. For these specific purposes is the G Master the best choice! However for someone who want's to have a telephoto for occasional use, I would recommend the F4 and save money for something with more frequent usage. :)

Martin Nemeth agree. My previous Sony 70-200 f4 G OSS was really a great lens for almost everything calling for 70-200 focal length. What could be an alternative for many is the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 art for Canon with MC-11 adapter. That crestes a really affordable 70-200 f2.8 with great IQ, but for me that combo came short to not bad, but still lower AF performance Vs. the G-master. Thanks for great review BTW!

Nice job, man. Keep it up and you will be one of the big shots on here. (Edit) You are totally correct: the f4 is fine for most of us. I admit I thought the G Master had more detail in the portrait of the girl, but the detail was of her skin imperfections. The f4 looked better and you can adjust in post. The f4 seems like a no brainer unless you are shooting sports at midnight. On the other hand, I have the Sony f4 24-70 and it is total garbage in any low light, so hopefully the 70-200 is better than that. We shall see.

You never mentioned the wider aperture advantage. That's the main reason for the larger lens to be superior. In low light situations, the f2.8 is best.
@MartinNemeth3 жыл бұрын
I think I have mentioned, that if low light is something you are going for, the GM is the way to go. However I didn't want to touch on that in this video. I thought that it is obvious that F2.8 will be much much better for low light than the F4. I wanted to compare these lenses at the same conditions to see if there is a significant difference in the image quality. And ... there is not. So my point is that you are paying extra $1000 for that F2.8. Many people, who do not care that much about low light, may save $1000 and invest that in some other stuff (ND's, cards, other lens, ...). :)

Hey! thanx for the comment / question. I wanted to test them out side by side. The G OSS cannot go below F4 so I wanted to know if there is any significant difference in the image quality between the G OSS and GM under the same conditions. Of course the F2.8 will have more shallow depth of field and better low light performance, but that was not my point here. My point here is, that the GM is a lot more expensive and there is not much of a difference in the image quality, when comparing those lenses under same conditions. So if you don't need better low light, you can save $1000 and invest that in something else, like ND filters, better camera body, other lens, etc. Of course I'm not saying that the GM is bad and if you have unlimited budget, go for it. However some people might think that there is "night and day" difference between the G OSS and GM and will buy the GM because of that.

@@billzidis2656 Yeah, you can be sure, I have 0 brand deals at this point :). I know what you mean. Some vids look like they are made only to promote a product or service. In some cases I do not mind, because they still provides me with entertainment or inspiration :). And to be honest, I would also like to make such brand oriented videos from time to time.

Oh god this backround music is killing me. I didnt understand anything because of this stupid music. This video would get triple traffic without any music in the backround. oh my god. I stop the video right in the beginnin and writing this comment. Dude you put a lot of effort for this video but you should understand. You simply stop your viewers to watch you own video by using a wrong music. Try something different. Use piano or guitar only.

I know about that issue. I should have set it quieter. The irony is, that this video gained me the most views and subscribers :P. Other videos are better when it comes to music and sound mixing. My bad. :(

I like the GM line very much, even though I recommend the F4 version (which is still a great lens). I am shooting my short film next week and I am going to use the 24-70 F2.8 Gmaster. Also a great lens. I am planning a review video for it too. :)
