Excellent comparison of the lenses. What I especially like about this review is that you talk in way that is easy to understand, and somewhat calming. Many of the people on KZbin produce videos with too many jump cuts, and videography tricks that detract from the video. I love both, but I’ve been biking lately with the Tamron and the fact that it is so light and small, it makes it very convenient to use it with peak design clip without having to put the camera in the bag.

Hey Dan! Great video - I saw you had the EVO 2 Pro 6K in some of your test shots. I have one on order from Drone-Works and was wondering if you were going to be doing a review or posting any of related videos? Would like to see your take on it! I do a lot of commercial work by Midway airport in Chicago so I use the EVO I over my P4P to avoid the geo-fencing nuisance and upgraded to the EVO 2 Pro for better images. I may still get the Mavic Air 2 for a smaller get-away drone depending on reviews. Thanks!

Nice video. Hope they make this lens for the Canon RF soon. Still using DSLR, but switching to Sony is not in the card. Size and lightweight is the biggest thing for me ( I am an event photographer) , though looks like Tamron did not skimp on optics, AF, etc. This lens maybe the one that gives the final reason to switch to mirrorless.

Nice video and comparison! One of the other options on the Sony 2.8 that may appeal to folks is the fact it will accept the Sony teleconverters for some additional reach as well. I know the Sony f4 will not accept a TC and recall the Tamron doesn’t either (however I could be wrong on the latter).

Excellent video... I have been trying to decide if it would be worth it to sell my Sony 70-200mm f/4G OSS lens and replace it with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. I still haven't decided if I will replace the f/4 G lens but, this video has nudged me a bit closer to making that move. I "think" that if Tamron had included the capability to add a 1.5x or 2x teleconverter capability to the Tamron, the switch would be a no brainer... Right now, the switch would cost me sevaral hundred dollars - depending on how much I could get for the f/4 G OSS lens. I presently, own the Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens and wonder if the Tamron, shot at 105 to 135mm and f/2.8, might be enough of a portrait lens to cover what I presently shoot outdoors with the Sony 85mm wide open. I suspect that it would since I have a 135mm f/2.8 Meyer Gorlitz which is great for portraits but, since it is manual focus - I prefer to use a lens on my Sony which will provide Eye-AF capability,,, I am not a professional anymore (retired many years ago) but I still like shooting portraits, Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has pretty much curtailed my portrait work; so I won't make any decisions until the COVID-19 is no longer a threat to me and the models that I shoot!

The Tamron got a slightly warmer tone (like Sigma) but this is really no problem to fix in LR or PS if necessary.

I think the other thing you missed out as an advantage on Sony 2.8 is the ability to use the Teleconverters. This allows you to get double usage out of the lens for things like wildlife as you can get a 300mm F4 or 400mm F5.6. That may be a reason to buy the Sony....

When I was a nikon shooter my favorite lens I owned was 70-200 2.8. Just loved the images I would get with it. But it eventually became my least used lens overtime because it was like dragging a horses leg around with me it was so big and heavy, I would almost always leave it at home (unless i was shooting a wedding). I shoot Sony now and have the f4 but I'm sooooo looking forward to getting the Tamron.

Wait a minute. First test shot, Tamron was clearly darker, in the image stabilization test, Tamron shows +0.3 while Sony jumps between +0.7 and +1.0. Tamrons light transmission being half stop worse compared to sony might worth mentioning.

Yep. The extra reach is minimal and cropping in post would still likely give you more resolution than you need for sports

Hey! So wide with AF-C is extremely powerful and I highly recommend it. Adding eye AF makes it even better. The only reason to switch to a zone or single point is if wide is picking up other people instead of the subject you want. Unlike the 6D, the A7III AF system is intelligent so wide is better than it would be on a dslr

I have the original A7r. Should I get the Sony F4 for tge image stabilization or Tamron f2.8 for the faster aputure?

Personally I way prefer having the faster aperture. Usually I shoot moving subjects and need to keep my shutter speed fast anyway negating most of the need of image stabilization. The issue for you is that without IBIS in the body, it might be harder to hand hold your frame and things can be a little shaky when looking in the viewfinder. So if you have stable hands, go for the Tamron but if you are shaky like me, maybe think about the Sony

Very nice review! That being said, I don't get when people call GM the ultimate, when it is not the best in AF... Think that you are taking photos of dancing people, toddlers, children...From what I see, the AF difference between the two matters. If you need a telephoto and you are taking photos of fast moving subjects, then 70-180 can be considered as the ULTIMATE...

I'm a GM 2.8 owner (no Tamron alternative at the time of my purchase) who shoots news and events. Of the substantial price difference between the two, I'd have to account many hundreds of dollars (at least) to the higher build quality and the stabilization. The price gap then becomes much less, especially spread out over years of ownership, too. Still a lot of difference, true, and if photographers don't need those extra features, then the easy choice is made.

I’ve recently got my first mirrorless! Got an A7iii, with a Tamron 17-28 & a 28-75. I’ve been absolutely loving it, but I definitely do need a longer telephoto also. I was looking into a second hand Sony 70-200, but I think this Tamron may be the best option. Can you confirm the filter thread size of the Tamron? Both my other 2 lenses are 67mm, which is so helpful as I bought a Nisi circular long exposure kit. If the 70-180 is also 67mm that will be so good, and deffo be the deciding factor. Love you content and was a really helpful video as this is literally the choice I am pondering at the moment. Cheers man!

I own an A7RIV and have a Sigma 100-400mm, but am wanting longer for wildlife and bird photography, so thinking about the Sony 200-600mm, which if I get that, sort of makes the Sigma 100-400 a bit redundant. So was thinking of selling that and replacing with the Tamron 70-180, so it follows on nicely from my Sony 24-105 which is a really useful focal range. The other question I have is, I also have the Big Beast 135 f1.8 GM lens which is awesome. But with the Tamron, (also have a Sony 90mm f2.8 macro which is awesome for portraiture as well), would this make the 135mm an expensive and possibly redundant bit of kit? I'd love your thoughts on this.

So I would definitely get the 70-180 with what you said as it offers something different than the 100-400 and 200-600 especially. But that 135 F1.8 is an absolutely awesome lens so I would be hesitant to get rid of it lol. The biggest benefit to the 135 is that the AF is insanely fast for a lens with that much heavy glass

I've ordered the Tamron, and am looking to replace the 100-400 Sigma with the 200-600mm Sony, however I hear there are some possible conflicts between this lens and the A7RIV which is concerning me slightly. Yep, the Tamron would be better if you want more bokeh since it can shoot at F2.8 and it was actually sharper than the Sony F4 in my tests

Defenitely the Tamron. The loss of 20 mm (10%) is not a big issue. I am more sceptical to the Tamron 28-75. If your lens is not wide enough there is nothing you can do about it.

Everyone has different needs thus different choices. Seems like we agree though. I loved the 28-75 but eventually switch to the Sigma 24-70 because that 4mm is huge and worth it even w/ the massive weight difference. Also loving the 70-180mm and makes the GM seem niche for build and 200mm.

Hey! So the Tamron has a slight quality advantage but the main win is an extra stop of light / shallower depth of field. However a negative is the loss of image stabilization so don't do it if you have a camera that lacks IBIS. That said, the Sony 70-200F4 is still awesome so I wouldn't be in any rush to make the change especially because it will cost you some $$$

Hello, what model was GM tested on? At 5.56 minutes you will see that you do not have identical carcasses. and the image quality of R3 and R4 is very different even with the same lens. I am silent about the earlier models you wear GM on. Because such a comparison doesn't make sense at all

All the side by side tests are both using the A7RIII. The guy that helped me at the shoot brought his R3 so we had two identical cameras. But I only own 1 personally which is why the broll shot at 5:56 shows different cameras

Tamron is tough as a rock. I took mine on a motorcycle trip for 30,000km from Miami to Thailand last year -- worst environment for environmental travel you can throw at a lens, rain, mud, rocks... I don't baby my stuff at all... No time on a motorcycle to play softball. Came back -- and it is like new after 10,000+ shots.

Busy bokeh of Tamron lens is a deal breaking fact for me, at 180mm f/2.8 the bokeh almost looks like a 200mm f/4 lens , nowhere near as smooth as typical 70-200 f/2.8 lens

Depends on what market you live in. I own the other two Tamron zoom lenses but have decided to pass on the 70-180. The UK price is too high. I already own the Sony 70-200 f4. My next lens is likely to be Sony 200-600 which is only about £200 more than this Tamron in UK and has OSS, lens switches and opens up more subjects like airshows and wildlife. Kind of disappointed by the pricing of Tamron this time and they've probably lost me as a customer.

Sony 70-200 f4 would work well in most scenarios with external lights. At 120mm or more you won’t feel much of a difference for background blur between f 2.8 and f4. IBIS is a great deal on the sony lenses, I have been shooting outdoor portraits with the sony f4 and it has been the best for me. I got a used one from B&H, saved some bucks. I wouldn’t prefer tamron lenses, Sigma is more trustworthy I believe.

I got the Tamron and I am absolutely happy with it. It’s fast, accurate, lightweight and it’s sharper than the Sony. And btw: it doesn’t feels cheap in your hand. Well built. I use it on a Sony A7RIII. First I really wanted to go with the GM, but I waited for the Tamron to compare both at my local AD. And I am happy I was patient and waited 😄 I mainly shoot portraits.

I currently have the Sony 70-200m f/4 and love that lens paired with my a7III, but the Tamron is very tempting because of size, and image quality and of course the price.

The F4, s picture quality will be better if you don't necessarily need that 2.8 !

I am selling mine. Close up performance is the worst of any telephoto I have used and it could be sharper wide open. The Tamron is much more versataille being better for everything from sports to portraits, cloae ups and low light events.

Sony F4 has no close up abilities nor is it as sharp as the Tamron 2.8 (not close) so sell your F4

The F4 is not even close to the Tamron. Not very sharp, slower with so so bokeh. And the sad MFD makes it a no go

Tamron knocked it out of the park with their "trinity" for sony. Only reason I stuck with sony because you're out of your mind if I'm paying for sonys price gouging GM lenses.

As a Sony shooter and one who has owned the 70-200 GM since it was released, I can say that the Sony and other 1st party brand’s 70-200 2.8 are straight up overpriced! The Tamron keeps up and in most cases exceeds the Sony and costs less than half the price. If all the camera companies are hurting, they can start by pricing these lenses for less, obviously it can be done as shown by Tamron time and time again.

Great video. I am thinking to buy used one, and f4 is fo 645, and tamron is for 899 or something similar . Now I know more, but still not ready to buy, because I have my canon SLR version. 70-200 f4 , and I don't do much photo with it, and I'm thinking when I will be ready, but thanks to u i SM closer to tamron. Thanks.🙂

Yeah, I definitely prefer the Tamron to the F4 in quality and if you want the ultimate build quality as well, you just have to spend the extra $ on the Sony 70-200 F2.8
