I had the same decision, and finally I bought Sony Lens (70-350). Great Sony Lens, high quality, lightweight and cheaper than Sigma.

I had the 18 135 and later upgraded to the 70 350. Now I use both. I have a 18 50 for most street and landscape stuff, 70 350 for zoom eg wildlife, and if I'm heading out for a day and don't want to or can't take a whole bag, the 18 135 can do most things well.

This Sony zoom is only slightly softer at 350mm if shot wide open. If you need absolute sharpness (for example, you need to crop in), best to stop down to f8 at that particular focal length.. the other focal lengths i normally just keep at maximum aperture.

Thanks for your comment. I took some test shots with both lenses, also with different f-stops. Unfortunately, the result was always the same. With the Sigma, it is extremely sharp even from the smallest f-stop. With the Sony I couldn't see any improvement, even with larger f-stops. Maybe I just bought a bad copy of the Sony lens. On the other hand, the better aperture should also be a strength of Sony. If you dim it extra, I see only a the better weight as an advantage.

@@dawa5581 With my copy of the lens, the difference between shooting at f6.3 vs f8 is quite noticeable at 350mm. For example, when shooting birds, at f8 you’ll get crisp feather details, but at f6.3 there is a bit of bloom/ haziness which will affect the sharpness a bit.

@@Patrick-vi9xr I ran a lot of tests with my copy of this lens; and after eliminating the probability of camera shake, I can’t say the lens react like this at 300mm. At 350mm or close to it, yes it’s easily noticeable.

Great comparison! Thank you... I bought a 70-350 lens... And its blow my mind how compact and sharp this lens are... Also stabilisation is very good I thought about buying sigma lens in case if a want to switch to fullframe but i had a similar size lens on my Fuji... The Fuji 100-400 has significantly better bokeh when sonys 70-350 and it is brighter so you could use higher shutter speed or have a better iso noise level but still it is bulky!

What i can see is that the sigma is a little bit sharper on the images. On video test sigma lens lose focus when zooming in-out, sony kept focus. i think this is a very personal choice between these two lenses (a little bit sharpness, weight, size, extra 50mm focal length). for portability reasons (i shoot handheld and travel long distances) i will go for the sony but both are great. Nice comparison video. Thank you!

I did a real world test between the Canon 100-400mm IS lens on a Canon 7D Mark-2 camera and the Sony 70-350mm G lens on a Sony A6600 camera and both were exceedingly sharp. The Canon just might have been a smidgen shaper but, the Sony setup was half the weight of the Canon with almost equivalent focal range. I decided that the Sony met my needs better than the Canon. Sure, I could have used the Canon lens on a full frame body but, I always used it on my crop sensor 7D2. OTOH - I enjoy the animal eye AF of the Sony which is lacking in the A6600...

I also enjoy the manual focusing capability of the Sony camera systems using legacy lenses. Although some of these lenses are very sharp and are "almost" a match for modern lenses - I especially like the creative renditions achieved by some of these lenses. Additionally, using a Kipon focal reducer on a legacy 135mm f/2.8 lens - the result on a crop camera is about a 140mm f/2.0 equivalent. Great for outdoor portraiture! @@dawa5581

I use an a6000 and 55-210mm kit sony lens and I just can't auto focus, it will only sharpen lets say the eye of the bird and none of the feathers. I also as a result manual focus and lose my shot half the time as bird has flown away. How is the a6400 with the 70-350mm focus and the sharpess of getting the whole body of a bird?

Thank you for your comment. 👍 the A6400 works very good with this lens. If I want to have a sharp image from the eye of the bird are used always the spot small mode on focus settings and I use in a shutter time of 1/1000 or 1/2000. With this settings I get really good results when I’m shooting birds.

Hi, I understand you perfectly. I often use dmf mode. When I photographing birds my shutter speed is set to 1/800. A few days ago I tried on 70-350 in the store. The time I set is 1/100 (AF-C) / Pictures are sharp and not blurred. I remain shocked. I'm buying it tomorrow

@@bozzie4 this is a good choice. 👍 But if you want to take images of flying birds, maybe 1/1000 could be not enough. But it depends also on the speed of the bird during the flight.

Thanks for your comment. I would take the Sigma 100-400. If you switch your camera to APS-C mode, you still have 26 MP with your A7RV and a focal length of 600mm. Or you can leave it at 400mm full frame and crop later. The Sigma also has fast autofocus for sports photography.

Hola, ambos son muy buenos. Si no te importa el peso, entonces me decantaría por el Sigma 100-400mm. Tienes 50mm más de alcance, lo cual es importante para la fotografía de fauna. También tendrás un teleobjetivo por si en el futuro quieres comprar una cámara A7 de fotograma Full Frame.

If size and weight doesn’t matter to you, then I would recommend the sigma 100-400. You will use the middle of a full frame glass and that is the best part and another benefit is, if you want to switch to full frame in the future you have also an tele lens that you can use.

The Sony is also a very good and sharp lens, but I would go with the sigma. Btw. Do you know that you can easy double your focal length range with your Sony camera? This function call: clear image zoom. I have also a video about this on my channel. That means you can make a 400 to an 800mm lens without any quality loss. 😉

@@karintosco no, this is not the same like the digital zoom. The digital has a lot of quality loss. The clear image zoom are using some extra pixels from the sensor which are not in use when you are photographing normally. But I explain all of this in my video.

wonderful review!!! very helpful. Size and weight matter to me as an international traveler. The Sigma lens, because it's full frame, does not even have the reach of the Sony 70-350mm when the sony lens is on an apsc 6700/6600 camera body, AND is twice the size and weight! NO brainer for me since I'm a Sony a6000 series fan boy. I've had the 70-350mm for several years and love this lens.

The "reach" or cropfactor is given by the camera, or more specifically the sensor size - not the lens. For the lens it simply means the sigma works on both, apsc and full frame. Whereas the sony lens only works if you put the camera in APSC mode. I think you misunderstood where the reach/crop factor calculation comes in - Sensor NOT lens.

Dude, the 70-350 is an APSC Lens, which means the full frame equivalent is not 105-525. Since its made for APSC, its full frame Equivalent would be also 70-350...right? Or am I just confused

No, that’s not true. FF equivalent means that you will have the range of 105-525 in the APS-C camera if you mount an 70-350 lens on it because of the 1.5 crop. If you want to get the same vocal range on the full frame camera you must mount a lens with 105-525 to get the same range like 70-350 on an APS-C Camera. I hope that I have explained it good. 😉

Does the term "70-350" refer to FF standard or is it calculated for APSC, which would mean that it is a true 70-350 for APSC? So if I would take a photo at 350mm with this lens on APSC and the same photo at 350mm on a FF Camera with FF lens, would it be the same field of view?

Gutes Video. Ich habe eigentlich nur einen (konstruktiven) Kritikpunkt: Deine Stimme ist etwas eintönig, was ich aber besser finde, als so mancher KZbinr, der im nervigen Teleshopping-Style rumjodelt. Jetzt die Kritik. Die Musik ist sehr anstrengend und nervig. Ich höre auf Kopfhörern und muss für die Stimme laut machen. Dann ätzt die Musik nach einer Minute richtig. Ich weiß, Gema-freie Musik zu finden ist nicht einfach. Aber dann lieber gar keine :-) Gruß :-)

​@@dawa5581I had this issue too when watching the video on my TV -- the sound stops after a few seconds. I then figured out that the KZbin player quality options allow manually deselecting 5.1 surround sound. After that, sound worked.
