I think 85mm for street is a cracking idea, you got me thinking about longer focal lengths for street with that 60mm macro m43 lens you did a while back.

Yeah that's another great combo. It's a bit more restrictive than 85, but if you're focusing on subject over scene, then you can get some great images 🖖

Love some of those street shots in the snow David - I totally failed to get out when it was snowing, was hoping for some more this weekend, but we've just got lots of the wetter form of snow (rain) instead!!! Nice focal length 85mm.

One that didn't occur to me to ask. I live in tropical country where strong sunlight reflected off car or shop windows can be problematic for street photography. Filters are more commonly used on film camera days, so do you use a polarizer filter on street photography? What do you think of the so called "black mist" filter.

Polarisers are one of the few filters I use quite a lot. Pre 2020 I did a lot of car photography and a cpl was essential to cut through reflections. I don't often use one for street photography since I don't often shoot through windows etc, and if I do see something interesting in glass, it's usually a reflection so I want to keep it in the shit. As for mist filters, I use a 1/8 freewell mist filter on pretty much all my video except the pov footage. I find that a 1/8 filter is subtle enough to not be obvious, but still adds the bloom to highlights and softens skin. Also mist filters are great for shooting in the city at night🖖

I dare say each photographer has their own reasons, but for me it usually happens either to help symmetry within the scene or simply because the human form is more pronounced when walking across a scene as opposed to walking towards or away from the camera. There are many reasons to shoot this way, but those are just a couple of mine🖖

💩📸 = got a world record King Kong's finger waiting unflushed in the toilet (bigger than the viking log at Jorvik) and I need to get a photo to send into the Guinness book of world records. P.S. in contact with Hull's Street life museum to get it on display and beat those stuck ups over in the west

@RealBesty yeah I follow you on there, I recall we talked about Flickr at some point a few months back. I genuinely think that feeling comfortable with what you're using makes for more considered images. If the longer lenses work for you, use them, that's why I do it🖖

@RealBesty Yeah absolutely with you on that. And besides not getting in a person's face, the longer focal lengths add that compression that isn't seen in street photography as much as the wider focal lengths are. I have the 40-150 for M4/3 and that's a great one for that kind of shooting.

I sometimes use an 85mm on a Sony A7R4 for street and, despite what all the purists say, it is entirely suitable. Street does not have to be either 28, or 35mm.

If it weren't for the fact that I like taking pictures in the evening, I would probably buy this lens too. But I bought a Samyang 85mm 1.4 II instead. And as for the 💩📷 camera, you should give it to that one friend who always says "Your camera takes great pictures" and tell him that's the one 😅

Yeah I considered the samyang, but the difference between 1.4 and 1.8 is so negligible given the iso performance, I went for the Sony to make sure I'd get that sticky AF for video bits. Thats a great idea for that Nikon lol Whenever I get the "oh your camera must be really good" type comments I always say my main camera is the Canon 400D 😂

That's a great idea and there are loads of options out there that are much better than this one. My eldest lad still prefers to grab the Canon G10 over anything else just because it gets the job done and he doesn't want to carry lenses around 🖖
