Sony A6600 Review: Better than the A7 III?

I got the A6600 3 years ago and could not be happier with it. even after 3 years of use, it does the job for me exceptionally well and still haven't use all its functions.

The sigma asp-c primes (16mm 1.4, 30mm 1.4, 56mm 1.4) are super highly rated and MUCH MUCH cheaper than their full frame equivalents. Canada pricing: a7iii + Zeiss 50mm f1.8: $3,677 a6600 * sigma 30mm f1.4 (45mm equivalent): $2,300 I do think the A7iii is better, but the lenses are soooooo expensive, and the body is quite a lot as well. If you're a pro, then the a7iii is probably worth it, but for a hobbyist it's too pricey.

I'm a Nikon guy using a used a6xxx with just a pancake lens attached beginning with a6000. It's been my go-getter camera I use for scouting - test and preview of my construction business. I have always liked the sturdy, sleek and minimalist design of Sony a6xxx cameras that can fit in any bag. I always upgrade if there's a used unit at ebay or amazons with a good price. The game changer for me to give away my a6300 along with its battery grip and batteries (retaining the pancake lens) is Sony a6600's FZ100 battery. I'm not into the imaging features of Sony a6xxx cameras considering I have my Nikons.

Thanks for the quesion Hussein k, since the release of the A9 the Sony camera's no longer support the timelapse apps, which is a bit frustrating for anyone who purchased them already. Luckily with the A6600 there is two ways you can create timelapses. The first uses the S&Q mode in the Quick setting to create a time-lapse video in camera, the longest interval between shots is 1 second. The second is using an Interval Recording mode that can capture still images with the longest interval being 60 seconds between shots, maximum number of shots is 9999 and you'll need to create the timelapse sequence on your computer rather than in-camera. How about a comparison video now that the A7III has received real time eye/ Animal auto focus after the firmware update? I think the record limit is also removed from the A7III . every knows the full frame out performs apsc in low light as long as it's in the same generation. For example, the 2019 a6600 outperforms the 2013 full frame Sony a7 mark 1. But the a6600 does not yet outperform the 2015 a7 mark 2. The current 2018 a7 mark III way outperforms the 2019 a6600.

The a6600's image quality is significantly better and less noisy than the a6000.. I was even surprised when I moved from the a6000 to the a6300 and now this one is even better..

@@oliversteiner0815 with each generation the Sony's ISO gets better and better. For instance the a6600 ISO now outperforms the full frame a7 mark I, however doesn't out perform the a7 mark II yet. With that being said the same thing goes for the full frame, a7 mark III is by far the ISO beast, can't imagine what the a7 mark IV will be like!

@@oliversteiner0815 I definitely agree with you there. The a6300 is about 15 months newer than the a7 II, so the a6300 has much newer tech. I'd go with the a6300 over the a7 II as well in terms of ISO & sensor image quality. it's all about the same tech- same generation. Given the same tech same gen. the full frame will always outperform the APSC in terms of ISO.

@@NickL0VIN True. For me however, Sony's recent APS-C cameras, with some fast glass, are good enough (plus small and leightweight). A little bit of noise won't kill me, I usually don't need ISOs above 3200 and on a print you will barely notice a bit of grain anyways..

a6600 can be used for weddings. We would suggest A7MK III beacuse of the full frame sensor and dual card slots, which are a must with weddings. Full frame sensor will give you better crop potential and low light performance and dual card slots gives you redundancy just in case one of your cards fails.

Well, I have both a7III and a6500 and the colors are killing me... So often I gotta borrow a friend's a7III or a6400 just for the colors cuz a6500 has the old ones... Gonna try my best to get rid of my a6500 and buy the a6600... I started to use a7III wih 24/1.4 GM for youtube but maybe it's gonna be better with the real-time eye af and sigma 16/1.4, what do u think, huh? oh, and finally, great video, loved it!

Hey Dan Iliev, thanks for the comment and glad to hear you liked the video. Colour science is super important these days especially when matching two cameras. The 24mm f/1.4 GM is a fantastic lens, we had one to shoot parts of this video and it's incredible, a great lens to take full advantage of the video eye-AF. Not sure how a sigma lens will work with the video eye-AF though, I'd assume they'd work but maybe test it out in-store before you buy just to make sure.

Hi Lothar, thanks for your comment. The A6600 and the Canon M6 II are pretty close in specs. The Canon has 8 additional megapixels, whereas the A6600 has a built-in viewfinder, sensors are a similar size & both cameras have video eye-AF for vlogging but only the A6600 has real-time tracking for stills. We havn't got our hands on the M6 II yet to review it but I suspect that other big differences would be ergonomics & battery life. Keep an eye on when the cameras are in stock so you can try them out yourself. Hope that helped a little bit.

Wow, over 200K views of a gear video, congratulations. At 4:59 you mentioned "new touch shutter" function. Actually, it is not new, it was introduced in the A5100 in August 2014. The A5100 had touch screen but the A6000 (February 2014), and A6300 (February 2016) didn't. Then Sony added touch screen to A6500 (October 2016), but simply forgot to add touch shutter. Now, with the A6600 (August 2019) touch shutter is back again after 5 years.

So the Real Time Tracking is only activated by touching the screen? What if you use your camera in Viewfinder only mode, like I do? Shooting wildlife I find I don't need the screen on.

Hey Triple070007, thanks for the comment. Real-time tracking is activated by touching the screen in the video mode. In the stills mode it can be activated by simply half-pressing the shutter and real-time tracking will start from where the focus box is located in the frame. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the comment SHITALCHANDRA P, Either camera should do a great job with the styles you mentioned, but for indoor functions and portraits I would probably recommend the A7III because of the full frame sensor. But if you're planning to us an external flash for your photography either camera should deliver good results. Another thing to consider for travel photos is the size and weight, for travelling the A6600 might suit your needs a little better. Hope that answer helped, but I'd strongly suggest visiting a store and comparing the cameras side by side for yourself.

I think if you wanted to shoot more vlogs then the continous eye autofocus is a distinct advantage. On the other hand the A7iii does still have continous video autofocus it just doesn't have eye-tracking in video. If you plan to shoot more still images and having a smaller size camera isn't super important than maybe the A7iii is the right choice. I always recommend trying the cameras out in store if you can. Hope that helps.

You may wan to look at the A6400 , it has many of the same features of the 6600 except the smaller battery but the price difference can be up to $700 with that you can buy a 2 prime lenses and a gimbal

If you're looking for something for vlogging that takes decent photos I would consider the A6600 over the A7iii just based on the video eye tracking autofocus and the flip screen. Might be worth having a look at the Canon EOS-RP too, it has eye tracking and an articulating screen.

I still crave the image quality from FF cameras and a proper lens, but decided to upgrade to what's essentially the flagship APS-C combo: A6600+16-55f2.8G. It does the job better than I could use it.

Between both, there is no clear cut winner in “image quality” a6600 is also very sharp what is mor noticiable is obviously the depth of field, full frame is a lot easier to get that buttery creamy bokeh. I have both, I carry around the a6600 far more than the a7iii just for the reason that paired with a 35mm oss It literally still fits in my jackets pocket with the lense attached to the body. Also, lenses are far cheaper and the sigma lenses are INCREDIBLY Sharp, paired with the ibis you have a perfect setup.

I opted for the A7iii and a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for about the same price as an A6600 and the new 16-55mm f.2.8 lens. IMO, that is a no- brainer in a decision making process. I kept the A6600 (with a battery grip to equal the A6600 battery time)...

TYPO... I meant to write that I am also keeping my A6400 which with the battery grip using a pair of batteries has approximately the same battery capacity as the A6600 with the larger battery. Plus I have the option of using the vertical composition shutter button AND I can also carry the camera withiut the battery grip for a lighter weight combination...

If video is your priority, and video eye AF is important to you. I’d choose the a6600 hands down. All the other video features, they both have it close to even.
