So I’ve heard that opticians around the world are using the “thanks philip” on screen during the rolling shutter demo with the cat photos on the wall to determine whether you need glasses or not. I had to get out my Canon 65mm 5X macro to see it! I forgot how crazy that lens was so THANKS GERALD for helping me rediscover it! Who knew Davinci Resolve had a font so small that the naked eye cannot see it! Also, as a board member of “KZbin Cat Council” I need to point out in KZbin’s terms and conditions it clearly states if you use footage of your own personal cats in a video without crediting or even acknowledging them you will get a copyright strike PER CAT. PEOPLE! That’s Lollipop (yes same name as my Lollipop) and Tig in Gerald’s eye autofocus tests! They are HIS cats and by far the best thing in this review. Yes! Gerald is a mad cat lady too but won’t admit it!!! 😂

Just one note about rolling shutter in video. As this camera writes gyrosensors and accelerometer meta-data into the footage, this metadata is used in Sony Catalyst Browse not only for stabilization (which is great), but also for rolling shutter compensation. I.e. with cost of minimal crop needed to fix skewed image you will get full elimination of rolling shutter from your camera movement.

People drool over every latest and greatest camera, but it really is about the user and the glass. If you can afford one of the new models, awesome! They're a great tool. If you can't, you don't need it. Good lighting, composition, and knowing how to use the settings of a camera will give you better results than a novice with an A1. If you're reading this and you're feeling like you're missing out or that you have to bankrupt yourself to get this or any camera, spend time developing your skills. Pursue education, watch free videos, and develop YOURSELF. I've seen many creators make beautiful videos on entry level devices. Order of priority: Skills Glass Camera bodies Then.. Videos like this are a great resource when you're ready! Gerald always nails it. And before you Sony fans get defensive in response, I own over a dozen cameras including flagship models and have no FOMO or axe to grind here. Just making sure people who want to enter this space use this content in their own best interest. Q4 of any year is apt to bankrupt anyone who feels they are being left behind on product releases.

@@adammohdkhairuddin1749 The A7III is a fabulous camera! This yearly update of cameras is very new (last 3-4 years). The leaps forward in tech do not merit a yearly upgrade, in my opinion. Marketing makes people feel like their 4-figure investment from 12 months ago is suddenly obsolete because the company made a few minor upgrades. The A7IV looks awesome if you're just getting into the market and have the budget, but it's not worth dumping the prior iteration over. I get selling a device and reinvesting, and if someone wants to go through that hassle and can really use the new features to increase their workflow, it's the right move. But, I see so many amateurs wanting to be the next GU, MKBHD, Casey Neistat etc. that think they need to have the latest and greatest, just to post videos with terrible WB, lighting, audio etc. I honestly think people can look at upgrading a camera every few years and keep up just fine on video... Photography, you can use your gear even longer.

@CarlBergsdorf3 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. The 33mp sounded nice before I heard about the rolling shutter. I guess Sony figured that it was necesarry to make the upgrades pretty even between stills and video to attract a wider group but tbh 24mp is still just fine for 99% of the people but it's eaiser to market 33mp than rolling shutter so..

I personally don't care much about video. I want this camera for stills, so the increase to 33 MP is a big benefit for me. A faster burst rate would have been nice, but the truth is that I rarely use continuous bursts anyway. Right now I use a ZV-1 and smartphone for video, so this would be a big upgrade. It's something that might make me switch from Nikon. After swearing off Sony for 3 years, the price/feature/quality combination of the A7IV was too much to resist, and boy, am I pleased with it...even the colors. I only shoot video and I find the AF and video features to be amazing. Before I have been using the Fuji and Panasonic cameras--wonderful cameras, amazing in their own right. But, personally, I think if they understood how freeing great AF actually is for a user's creativity and imagination they would move heaven and earth to perfect the AF features in their cameras--which are, otherwise, wonderful. Man I love this camera. Can’t recommend it enough for most hybrid situations. I have had it overheat during longer outdoor shoots during bright sunny days. For that reason I’m looking to pickup a FX3 at some point for strictly video use but for photos and a B cam it does fantastic especially with 10 bit SLog footage. Just wish it had RAW via an Atmos

I’m looking to upgrade from my a7iii but have been hesitate due to the many overheating complaints I’ve heard. Ideally I’d eventually use this in conjunction with an fx3 where it would be more of a b cam. How has the overheating been in your experience?

I'm kinda happy now that I switched to Canon from Fuji instead of Sony. The R6 would've been the perfect camera for me if it had the video, stills switch, or the possibility to remember different video settings on the c1-c3 buttons. Great in-depth review of the a7IV.
@juliancroot2 жыл бұрын
Thorough and concise as usual. Thanks Gerald. I think the A7Siii's relatively weak noise performance between the commonly used 3200 and 6400 ISO range is what might sell a few of these A7IV's. Although it has its own weaknesses (overheating obviously one of them), the Canon R6 might arguably be a better option for short clips of full frame 4K60 in moderately low light. You've gotta appreciate what Sony is doing overall though.

@@AmritaBhortake Still a no. They haven't fixed the JPG's blue's shifting to purple. ACR default rendering in LR is just awful. More of Adobe's fault, but still. HIF format is neat, but needs conversion with Sony's software, at least for a few weeks or months. Animal and eye tracking is VERY nice though. It surprisingly doesn't support CFE cards which I already have, and overlooked. Just not as comfy as a Nikon or Canon in hand. I really like how customizable it is. Nearly every button on the back can be remapped. I'd miss the two front buttons Nikon has. The 20f1.8G, 24-105G, and 70-180tamron lenses were great on it; too bad! Reviewing gallery samples and others it seems to underexpose quite a bit. The mode dial doesn't lock or click into place. the fonts and icons are too small. Nikon puts a larger border on their text so you can see text with light backgrounds. I'm guess just not a Sony person.

Do we think the Variable Shutter will come as a Firmware upgrade now to the A7siii and FX3. For me as an event shooter that's a feature I have been requesting for ages- it would be weird if the A7IV and A1 get this but not the A7siii/FX3. I'm hoping it's just a software update and not due to any hardware limitations in the A7siii sensor.

So I got my a7 IV in and all is great but DON’T get the Kondor Blue cage. The new Photo/Video switch on the bottom of the program dial makes it hard to use because of how the top plate protrudes out. If you have small finger it might work but it’s an issue. I just order a half cage from SmallRig

Just received my A7 IV finally and noticed something strange. HDMI Info display output works in 4k now (awesome!), but ONLY if you're in video mode. If you're in photo mode, we're back to the ol' forced-1080p HDMI output thing. I wonder if it was just an oversight when splitting things out between the photo and video settings...

Great review as usual. As a Panasonic S1 user the A7iv is smaller/lighter, better AF, more lens selection, has All-Intra frame rates, slightly faster AF burst photos, and flip out screen. But the S1 has better stabilization, 6K video, 6K raw/4K raw external, awesome battery life, and weather-proof/freeze proof. The 4K60p crop sucks, the S1 has it too and when you're filming on the go and switch over to 60 for some slo-mo and it crops in... it really does cause you to have to recalculate everything, and slows you down. All in all since the L-mount is a moving at a snails pace... I think i'll be looking at this camera in the coming months.

@ChristianStJulian3 жыл бұрын
@@itsjohnrice Yup S5 has that feature too. Panasonic will continue to be the underdog but doesn't deserve to be. It hits above it's weight class if you're willing to be resourceful and learn the camera well. The biggest downside I've seen is the expense of lenses not even so much availability. The rolling shutter is what is making me second guess upgrading from my a9 to this. I moved from the a7iii specifically because of the sensor scan rate on silent shooting for reportage, and it doesn't look like the a7iv really fixes that...

Well it's a good thing it was never meant to compete with the A9. This is an entry level camera, part of the lowest end full frame line Sony makes.
