Great, short video on all the basics. I've done a lot of night photography and this video would have saved me a huge amount of trial and error. If you're just beginning, this is a great starting point. It doesn't go into advanced topics, which would be way TMI if you're beginning. The recommended Photopills is cheap and the standard go to app. Get it.

Definitely Mark. You can get some fantastic shots with a crop sensor with the right lenses. And if the air quality is good and the milkyway is close to the horizon, you should be able to get a good foreground with the milk in the background! 👍

I am 65, cameras, multimedia, film, art my entire life. Retired and now set up full time 18 hours a day creating, set myself up in gear for this time. Most I had heard but your piece and the edit are on on point for directness/clarity. Tip of the hat to you.

Thanks so much Michael, that means a lot! It really annoys me when people aren’t direct and to the point and there’s a lot of videos that ramble on for ages before getting to the subject at hand. Great tutorial and well appreciated! Would like to point out however, that by default, there is no magnify button. You have to go into the menu system and find it and ultimately create a quick key for it. Once you start the magnify tool (whether through the menu or quick key you created, you then use the button inside the round scroll wheel to further magnify. This was at least my experience straight out of the box.

There’s nothing quite as mesmerising like getting lost in the stars. Question: is a f4 adequate enough for astrophotography? My assumption is that the low-light capabilities of the A73 would allow for smaller apertures, although not optimal.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
You’re totally right!! I often find myself staying out all night when we go out and shoot the stars...I sometimes just sit back in my camping chair and stargaze!! Since I’ve had the wider aperture lenses I haven’t really tried to shoot at f4 but that would be a great subject for a video! In theory when I shoot with the 14mm f2.8, it’s only one stop away from f4, but then, if I’m shooting at iso 5000, that would then knock it up to 10000... I’m definitely going to make a video on this as I think it would be an interesting test to do. 👍

Using a 2 second timer on the shutter is a good idea to reduce the chance of camera shake. Also I recommend using bright monitoring, it's a bit hidden in the menus but you can set one of the custom buttons to it. It brightens up everything in front of the camera to really help with finding a composition.
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Most definitely! I mentioned using the 2 second timer at 2:05. It definitely helps with keeping the camera as still as possible. With the brightness of the monitor, I sometimes find dimming it helps keeps your eyes adjusted to seeing all the stars....I sometimes get a bit blinded when the brightness is up on a really dark night. That’s a good idea in using the brightness to help with composition though! 👍

Mike, great video, can you please explain the reason behind turning off noise reduction setting, and specifically using uncompressed RAW format?
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Noise reduction doubles the time of each exposure, so you'll only get half the total exposures to normal, and long exposure noise reduction can be done in editing. As for uncompressed raw files, they give a slightly better image, especially in the shadows... And at night, there are a lot of shadows! Thanks for watching. 👍

How well hidden is that feature!!?? I finally found the function and have been playing around with it. It will be brilliant for getting composition but with focussing, when you press the magnify button to check critical focus, it comes out of “bright monitoring” and back to the normal monitoring mode, so I’m not sure how good it will be for that....however, like you said, it will be great for quickly composing the shot and I’ll definitely be using it on my next shoot. Awesome! Glad I could help!! Where you headed? I’m in northern Italy at the moment hoping that we get some clear skies around the new moon!
@kyleduff35566 жыл бұрын
Clear skies would be great, I'm headed up to some Michigan dunes. Just got the Sony 28 f/2, hoping to get my first milky way shots. Italy sounds amazing, hoping to get to the Dolomites at some point in the future. By the way, I have the kit lens (28-70 f/3.5-5.6), is there any chance that this lens is capable of capturing good astrophography shots?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Sounds awesome! The 28f2 will be great for that. You’ll be able to get some good shots with the kit lens but with the smaller apertures, you’ll have to bump up the iso to compensate. The best thing is to play around with the two different lenses and see what works......and be prepared to look at your watch and realise time has flown by!! I always plan to be out for an hour or so and four hours later, I’m still shooting!! 😆 Let me know how you get on Kyle! 👍

THX! great explanation! i tried this already with a Sony Alpha 6000 and a Samyang 14mm F2.0 with mixed Results. If i turn the ISO over 800 on the A6000 the noise is terrible. looking forward to my A7iii
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the older sensor in the A6000 does get noisy quickly. The other thing to look into is stacking your images. This will get rid of more noise than just shooting the image in one shot. I did a video on it a while back, check it out when you get a chance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHa4ap6GeNyiqq8 Thanks for watching 😁👍

my question would be are all the settings the same when you have the subject light up as well like with the car shots with the milky way in the background? of is that done in photoshop
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. It depends on how bright the car lights are...sometimes I have to cover the lens when the cars stay in the shot too long...it just takes a little experimentation to get it right...you'll find some will over expose and others will be ok...this is one of the reasons why I almost always end up staying out all night...and once you get a good one, you want to keep getting more!! Thanks for watching...and sorry for the slow response...only just found your message now for some reason...🤔

Great, informative video! I really enjoyed how clear and to the point everything was. A lot of other KZbin channels get so carried away in ones personality plus all the added annoying video effects, this one really stood out. I'm subscribed, hoping for more videos, I can't wait to start shooting the stars!

Thanks so much Ryan! This was one of the reasons I started doing weekly videos, it really annoys me when you click on a title and you have to wait 5 minutes for them to get to the point! I’m loving doing these...and it’s great to here people are learning from me as well! Lots more to come so make sure you turn on notifications so you get a message when I upload new stuff! 👍

Great Video! I have a A7iii and got a question regarding SteadyShot on the camera. I was on the impression the software of the camera disable the SteadyShot when no movement occurs.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andre, You are right. When the camera is on a tripod and the camera doesn't sense any movement, it keeps still. I just switch this off as a habit from when I used to shoot with Canon cameras. The image stabilization expects movement even when there isn't any...so for canon cameras you do have to turn it off. Thanks for watching. 👍

For the pictures at 3:50 how did you expose the RV/van? Did you use ambient light? And I'm assuming the van is also in focus because of the infinite focus setting but my lens doesn't have that. Does this mean my foreground will be out of focus?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi J, With the RV, I was lucky that the moonlight was lighting it up really well. I did have to bump up the exposure on it a little by using the brush tool in Lightroom to select just the van, but apart from that I just did my normal astro editing. You're right, I was far enough away from the van that it was in focus for the lens I was using. If you focus on the stars, and then get your foreground element about 8-10ft away from you, it should still be in focus...obviously this distance will change with different lenses but you should be able to work it out with a few test shots. Thanks for watching! 👍

I'm glad you liked it. If you're shooting with a kit lens, you should consider taking a series of shots, stacking them later in starry landscape stacker or sequator for a cleaner final image. I did a video on stacking a while back,kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHa4ap6GeNyiqq8 😁👍

Cool. I was tempted by the mark 6 but it’s expensive and the lower apertures really hurt it in low light! I used to live in Dorset but now we’re based in Dubai....so it’s a little far from Hampshire!

Mike I realize this video is a little “older.” I wonder what items in your “default “ Astro photography list would change after the testing you did with the A7Riii concerning the ISO intolerant sensor. I have continually had some “ intermittent “ long exp.” problems and searching for what my issue may be. As usual, thanks a lot and great job with your channel. Nice to see it growing for you
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chad. I pretty much still follow this apart from a couple of changes...I just use bright monitoring to compose the shot and then I’ll take a few with much lower iso values to see what I can pull out of the images. I’ve also got my hands on a tracker recently so playing around with that at the mo. What issues are you having?

Really Great Video Mike!!! Do you have a video on how to take the northern lights?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Damian, that’s one thing I haven’t had the chance to do yet, but it’s definitely on the list when we go up to Norway and Iceland. I’m guessing it will be similar. If they are really bright or there is a lot of movement your shutterspeed will have to come down.

Hey Mike, just curious to know if you have a tutorial that can help start me on Astro "Filming" and/or Time Lapse of the stars? After following the steps of this video I was so stoked to have more or less instant success photographing the night sky. It would be super cool to also be able to capture the "orbit of the solar system" if that is the correct analogy. Cheers, Nigel

Hi Mike, any tips on shooting the northern lights? Thanks
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lim, I think they are quite variable so you really need to keep an eye on your settings. When they are strong, they are much brighter than the normal night sky so you can really bring your iso down when this happens... I’d approach it like a normal night sky but be prepared to really knock your exposure down if they come in strong. I hope that helps. 👍
@KrushevT6 жыл бұрын
Amazing! Gonna try this in Snowdonia soon, hope the night is clear.

Awesome! Snowdonia should be great for this. Lots of dark skies! Yep, all you have to hope for is clear skies. There's a great app I've started to use, it's called "Clear outside" and its great for seeing the different levels of cloud, current and predicted, and also lots of other info!
