In this video I check out the much anticipated and much hyped Sony A7iii, a camera that I hate, because it is so good. Yes, I want one. The A6500 is a great camera, but when compared to the new A7iii, it doesn't look as great. Buy it here!: geni.us/P5dl9G

I have the a6500 and the A7III. After having the A7III I actually appreciate the a6500 even more. I haven't seen a huge difference in image quality. A7III is great and I will probably keep it, but A6500 focal lengths are actually more preferred(by me) on all my favorite lenses. To get the same focal lengths with the A7III the weight of my set up doubles-- 40% more body weight+40% more lens weight. My APSC lenses are sharp and light(like the Zeiss 24mm 1.8). I also love the Sigma 16mm 1.4 on the a6500. APSC lenses render at 10mp on the A7III, which makes them unusable of course. When shooting the super sharp Voigt 65mm Macro on both cameras, I can barely see any difference in resolution between the two....slight edge to the A7III. Going full frame I definitely will want/need a 135mm now, which is going to make for a super heavy set up. Will image quality on A7iii+135mm be that much better than a6500+Sony FE 85mm 1.8? A little surely, but enough to justify double the cost and more than double the weight? Something to consider.

@ArthurR 6 жыл бұрын
Valid points and arguments. There is no denying the weight/size benefits and some of the lenses such as the Sigma 16mm are amazing on APSC bodies.

M Wood. I shoot Macro with the sony 90 mm and I am considering to upgrade my a6000. According to your experience, Is it worthy to upgrade to the a6500 or the a7III? Thanks¡¡
@manthony1921
@manthony1921 6 жыл бұрын
Camilol Zuniga. I really think it depends on the lenses you already own. Sounds like you mostly shoot with the 90mm for Macro so in that case I would upgrade to the A7III. If you also own alot of great APSC lenses, then you may just want to upgrade to the a6500. Right now the a6500 is on sale for $1100 which is about half of cost of the A7III. That $900 will get you an awesome lens or two.
@kmiloz
@kmiloz 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your answer. My gear for macro is mainly the 90 mm and some extension tubes. Moreover I own a sony 28mm/F2.0, the a6000 kit lens and the APS-C rokinon 12 mm/F2.8. So in my case the lenses I have is not a determinant factor to lean toward the a6500 or the a7III. Just like you, I am bit concerned about weight and portability of my gear, although I know that the 90 mm macro lens is not precisely a lightweight. Then, based on the new information and your experience with macro, Would you suggest me to go for the a7III? I am a bit lost, that's why I appreciate to get a good advise from people who get both cameras.

I think one of the main reasons to choose full frame is just the usability. Having dedicated dials for aperture, shutter speed and ISO makes a big difference, as does having more function buttons, and a better grip etc. I recommend having both APS-C and Full Frame (I have A7R2, A6500 and A5100) and just choosing whether you are optimizing for usability/image quality - or portability. Definitely get the A7M3 for taking pictures of the Kiddo ;) And when you do get one - reach out... I have some good lens recommendations and ideas for videos.

Hello Arthur, so did you buy the A7iii ? I have a A6500 with very good lenses (like the zeiss 24) but I love low light shots, and I ´m in between switch full frame or buy a new lense like the sigma 16 1.4 for my camera 😬. I love the compact size and weight of my set up and I don’t know if I buy a A7 iii if size and weight if it will be an issue

Hi, you have forgot not only to calculate focal leght (crop FF) but also the F-stops. Sony cameras has x1,5 crop factor, so 30mm f/2.8 lens on crop will be like 45mm f/4 on FF. Other thing - I have a6000 and in my experience it is very, very sharp (even on 1:1 close up). I was surprised that 3x more expnsive a6500 is actualy not as sharp as mine a6000.

Congratulations you two!! Very happy for you! I've read some of the comments saying you should go full frame, or sticking with APSC. I personally think that making reviews on full frame cameras and lenses is a good direction moving forward, but at the same time, sticking to APSC because there aren't many reviewers out there (and yours is one of the best!). Anyways, whatever path you choose (heck even if you go to Fuji), I'll still watch all your videos and support them! Cheers and congratulations once again!!

You are far more impressed with it than I was with mine, which is why I sent it back to B&H (keep an eye in their used section for it to appear). In my comparisons between my A6500 and my A7iii, I used the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 against the 55 f/1.4 and then put the 55 f/1.4 on the A6500 and compared it to the 85mm f/1.8 on the A7iii. Man, the differences were SO slight I had to do extreme pixel peeping to see a difference. Autofocus is barely better and only in low light. Speaking of low light, the noise difference is not that great over the A6500. After a few days of shooting with the A7iii I quickly grew tired of lugging around the camera for barely perceptible image improvements and ended up cherishing my A6500 even more than I already did. Great video, as always!
@ArthurR
@ArthurR 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting observations - it's good to hear another perspective. When you look at other 4-way comparisons the A7iii usually comes in first and A6500 second, so I can see how slight the differences can me. In my testing, they were bigger than I expected. I didnt think the A7iii would be as good, honestly.

thanks for another awesome video and congrats on the baby! as a person who upgraded to a7iii and still owns the a6000, I realized that the sony aps-c mirrorless cameras are still valuable to keep around as their form factor is so incredible. at the end, I am keeping my a6000 camera with 35mm f1.8 prime and the kit lens as I can just slide them in my pocket to just about everywhere. when convenience is not a factor, though, my a7iii is basically always attached to me
@ArthurR

I can most definitely relate. One of the reasons I moved from my Canon 60D to the A6000 was the form factor. I realize how much more I use the camera because it is smaller and easy to grab and go.

A6700 will be as good as the A7III The reason why A7iii looks better is not because it's a full frame 1-A7iii using new Sony colour science(started with A9) 2-A7iii is using new very weak AA filter and new sensor 3-Check DXO ratings the 35m SONY is not known for its sharpness (the Sony 28m is quite sharp) if you wanted more accurate results should have used the new sigma 30mmOverall duo the new colors+better sharpness AA FILTER+New sensor the A7iii should look better A6700/A7000 Is getting announced early June according to rumours and it will have all of the new stuff A7iii will still beat A67000 at low light but the difference will barely be noticeable at daylight in image quality that's for sure
@Fenix_Kage
@Fenix_Kage 5 жыл бұрын
A very thorough comparison. However, the huge difference in image quality was not at all obvious and despite stating there was one several times with many photos, you never pointed to any details to make your case. The only difference I could find myself was in the texture of the skin of your model's face. But that required so much zoom to see that it probably wouldn't have been noticeable even on a large print. I've had the a6000 for 4 years and am starting to do paid studio work with it. So I'm genuinely interested in whether there are, in fact, enough practical differences to warrant upgrading to the A7 III over the upcoming a7000, which could make use my existing set of 6 lenses.

So many mistakes on this video!!!! Use a Sigma prime with 6500 and it will look much closer in comparison under good light. Your "great" lens 35mm you used for the test is rather bad in sharpness. In low light of course the FF is better. Also crop on the A73 is using less MP which is less demanding than 24MP on a smaller sensor so of course the lens will look "better". This video is very misleading and I should ff professionally, but I don't like people believing bad info like this

Congratulations on the new addition (and not the camera either). I had the same (Camera) Epiphany when shooting a wedding about 5 years ago, I was using the Sony A77 and the A99 and I went from one to the other for two consecutive shots, later when I was editing them, I was amazed at the difference in detail between the two, it caught me by surprise as well. I still have a couple of APS-C cameras (A6500 and A6300), but most of my serious shooting is done with the full frames (A9 and A7RIII). You will love it when you get it. Go ahead and spend the extra $200 and get the kit lens, it is nice and sharp and for that price a bargain. Some lenses to look into are the 25mm Zeiss Batis, 55mm F1.8 Zeiss, 85mm f1.8 and of course the 24-70 and 70-200 Sony lenses (the f4s are good but the 2.8 are better). Also Tamrons new 28-70 f2.8 when it becomes available should be a winner. Welcome to full frame!

This is why I left Sony, they sorta gimp their APS-C cams and especially lenses hoping that you’ll eventually upgrade to FF. Something like the a7iii is a gateway drug... before you know it, you’ll find yourself justifying spending $2,000 a piece on massive G master lenses... (and WOAHHH dude congrats on the baby! A very good-looking guy or gal is on his/her way :)

Jeremy you are absolutely spot on. You were smart to get out, my gateway drug was the a6000 and the dealers were Gary Fong and Jason Lanier.

Socrates Vela, haha yeah. I like those guys, and Sony cameras are good, but they are trending right now and you have to pay a premium for them. I moved to Fuji which isn’t really cheap either haha but at least even the cheaper bodies have the exact same sensor as the upper end ones, so I don’t feel any need to upgrade. And every lens purchase is final, my 18-55 kit lens is already the best stabilized mid-range zoom in the line (really, it is superb) and there is nothing to upgrade to!

I know, you are right.. I wanted to buy a6500 for months and I'm about to buy the a6500, but than at some point i thought.. damn a6500 will be 1400$ + a gimbal, + a different lens + viltrox focal reducer + something.. and propably that will be over 2000$ maybe not at one moment but expanded in time.. Maybe its better to buy a7iii? which is 2000$ 2200$ with a decent kit lens which looks like a normal lens (not like the a6500 kit lens wich is awfull and propably would just use it for videos) and I love full frame! But than.. if I would like to buy a gimbal for a7iii I would have to go for the more expensive one.. etc etc.. and than maybe at certain point I l spent 3 000 $ when I'm on a budget.. also I get more weight in my travel bag. Should I buy the a6500? For instance the zhiyun crane-m is now only 200$.. and with focal reducer and manual nikon lenses that I owe propably I can get very nice video quality :) great video by the way

Thanks for your honest review. I have had an a6000 for four years and love it. Just over a year ago I got a second-hand A7RII with a 24-70 F4, and can not believe the extra detail in the 42MP sensor, the dynamic range and low light performance, although weight and some size are the trade off. I think I will always be a fan of Sony and the great cameras they produce.

I don't know why these people said APS-C is dead. I personally Pre Ordered the A7iii, but later cancel the order and purchased a A6500. I had the A6300 but gotten stolen, so I needed a camera. after my pre order, I been thinking in my head so much it hurts. trying to find nice lightweight affordable lens. No luck. The Full Frame lenses are large and if you get the 2.8 and below, it's expensive. The A7iii certainly has a lot to offer, but I'm well happy with the APS-C. I guess people also think because Sony released a sub $2000 full frame camera, they think it's the perfect camera. Depending on what you need. The Canon 6D II can do just as well less the video.

Sam Wong the canon 6D ii is basically a joke... Worse dynamic range than an apsc camera from 6 years ago and no video features
@swonghobby
@swonghobby 6 жыл бұрын
picimisakis I wouldn't say it's a joke. It's does not have that many feature as the Sony, but it still can do the job. There are a lot of landscape and travelphotographer using it. The dynamic range. The most controversial thing out there. So how many stop is it from the Sony? 1stop? 2 stop? Is it really that big of a difference and is it really that important? If you get your exposure correctly, It doesn't matter that much. With that said. Canon really can beef up the 6Dii.

Sam Wong talking about battery life is what matters the most. A7iii so far have a great battery. Still not convinced with a6500 in terms of battery life. But i have to agree that full frame lenses for a7 series insanely expensive and big. For videos its fine since most people use prime lenses. But for photo department might be weird especially using lens like 70-200. For videos better get sony and canon for photos
@swonghobby

eznymorpheus I agree with u the battery is important. I like the a6500 size, but hated the battery. The new Z battery is nice. I don't do videos, mostly photos. I still carry 3 battery at all times. As for video, I concerned about the over heating.

Would really hate if you become another sony full frame show, thrashing us aspc c users, one day I will buy a Sony full frame but right now I'm about to buy my second APS C body as I build my lens arsenal, even if I buy a FF camera, I will always keep APS C with me, another thing people is NOT mentioning about a7 III is that, with FF you're committing to $1000+ lenses, which if in my case if gigs are not providing me the funds I won't buy it out of pocket just because
