Hi Dan, you do not need to have your af area set to wide for eye-af to capture anywhere on the frame where focus points are. it will search for it no matter what focus area you are in, so to all that want to use different focus areas but want to use eye af as well do not worry.
@GioFar6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it could matter but in a positive way, well if you know it. If you have multiple faces on the frame and you put the flexible spot on one specific face, the eye AF will track an eye from that face. Once locked, you can recompose and move the camera and the AF it will not consider the flexible spot position until you restart tracking.

I just decided to bite the bullet and order an A7III. I basically just got into photography and videography and my first camera was a used (like new) a6500 that I got through Amazon. I was happy with the results I got with it but seeing all of the A7III-related videos and discussions recently finally pushed me over the edge and I decided that I'd return my a6500 and both of the prime lenses I had for it in order to be able to pick up the A7III. It sucks that it's probably going to take at least a few weeks for me to actually receive it since the demand has been so high but I think that being without a camera for a little while will all be made worth it when that beautiful box arrives. Thank you so much in advance for the great A7III content. I am certain that I will be back here once I finally have it.

I shoot mainly in silent mode and came across the flickering issue under led lighting. However, in non silent mode you have anti flickering mode. When turned on even with e-front curtain the banding is gone. I tested this, so you dont need to turn it off. However in silent mode when your turn shutter speed around 1/125 or lower you don’t really get banding anymore.

Thank you so much Dan for the informative and helpful review, I always learn from your videos, I've heard that in f stops smaller than f/11 A7III has issue in AF-C mode (shooting images), I would like to ask if you faced with such an issue? I might go to purchase this camera but before I wanted to ask you if such an issue exists or not? God bless and good luck!
@learningcameras10 ай бұрын
Hey! So there is a potential issue. I believe the problem is that the camera uses 2 different technologies for autofocus, phase detection and contrast detection. Phase detection which is the best technology for tracking moving subjects does not work with apertures smaller than F/11 although contrast detection does work. Contrast detection needs a decent amount of contrast between the subject and the background in order to work effectively and overexposed backgrounds (bright sky/sun) can be a struggle for that technology. It's not something I would worry about though. The camera will still focus up to F/22 on most lenses and the A7III isn't the only camera that has this kind of limitation...in fact some cameras like the Panasonic S5 ONLY use contrast detection and don't even have the phase detection option. Hope that helps!

@jaredgreenberg54675 жыл бұрын
This is great and greatly appreciated but I just have to point out that, in contrast to what was stated in the video, shutter shake is LESS relevant (not more relevant) for long exposures, wherein any shake occurs during a much smaller fraction of the total exposure (and also, very little if any light is actually entering the camera and exposing the sensor during the split second of the shake).
@jaredgreenberg54675 жыл бұрын
To clarify, clause in parentheses refers specifically to long exposures (which by nature are low light).

You are among the best reviewers, ever! I noticed banding in your video early on, around 40 seconds plus or minus? The video clip showing the camera (product shot) on a white background. I had this camera on preorder, but the banding question (my biggest concern is stills) made me hesitate and wait until I learn more about the camera. Your review helps me understand the issue a bit more. One reviewer suggested regular old incandescent bulbs introduced it, but otherwise it seems to be an issue with LED. I’ve noticed banding at high iso and low light will all my cameras, including Nikon with my Hue bulbs - so maybe it’s not unique to Sony at all? Thank you for your awesome review.

Hey there! Another big disadvantage of shooting compressed RAW is the fact that in order to work on them on a computer, your editing software first needs to uncompress them. This means that they need more processing power, which can lead to a slower workflow, which is especially important if you're working on a lot of photos. Thanks for this video though, great information! Cheers

I've a 2017 iMac, midrange specs but with 512 SSD, and I could see the difference between uncompressed and compressed when editing, no question. Really good point, and one which has pushed me to uncompressed for all my shooting.

Nice video, thanks. One update on Eye AF - the focus area does not need to be set to Wide for Eye AF to work. Best setup is to have Face Detect & Face Detect Frame Display ON so you can see that a face is detected. When you press the button you have assigned to Eye AF it will lock on to the eye of the detected face (or the face itself if it can’t detect the eye) even of the AF is set to, say, Flexible Spot. This is for photos of course, video AF works differently.

You're the first person to say that the electronic shutter off is the best way to go. From my understanding if you have it off and you use the actual shutter, you will get better bokeh. What do you think about that?
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
E shutter off is absolutely the way to go unless you have an A1. Electronic shutter is basically an electronic scan of the sensor and its not instantaneous so you can get rolling shutter, banding, and I have heard about aperture issues when using super fast shutter speeds
@fufu14052 жыл бұрын
@@learningcameras I guess I misunderstood then? So you're saying E shutter off is the way to go and not ''E shutter ON, unless you're in doors with unreliable lighting''?
@learningcameras2 жыл бұрын
@@fufu1405 E shutter off is the way to go. The only exception where E shutter is OK is outdoors (indoor lighting can be an issue) with slow movement (landscapes, products...static portraits) and even then you could see some differences with depth of field/aperture in E shutter when also shooting very fast shutter speeds

One more thing worth mentioning about uncompressed vs compressed raw what i've noticed. The compressed raw is way more CPU intensive when editing on a weaker machine, but uncompressed raw needs more IO speed. So if you are using a weaker machine with fast storage (like me for example, the 12" macbook) its easier to use uncompressed raws. But for example with a macbook pro but a slower external HDD, i'd probably prefer editing compressed raws.

Getting banding from the electronic first curtain seems very rare - my guess is only with very bright flickery LED lights with very specific shutter speeds. I've never seen in shooting A7 cameras for 5 years now. Good information about the lossy 12 bit raw when in compressed and continuous shooting (not continuous AF). I wasn't aware of that and I agree that it would be nice to have a setting to prevent the auto-switch to 12 bit raw. I wonder if it does this when bracketing at well since it is similar to continuous?

I don't have a Sony camera and I'm looking to maybe get into Sony systems with the A7III. Along with all the many features that this camera, the eye autofocus is particularly important to me. I have a question, on all Sony cameras, does the eye autofocus work with a dedicated push button like how you demonstrated or can it be can it something you turn on and it just works without you assigning the functionality to a button? I do a lot of travel photography and sometimes I like to be in shut and most often the camera is on a tripod and a timer in such situations. Nailing focus in such situations is not always the best to my liking. I was hoping eye autofocus can help but it seems like it's not gonna be this case.

Hey, when we use the Eye-Af by pressing the AF-ON button, isn't the normal focusing assigned to the shutter release button? The Eye-Af overrides the half press of the shutter button, so you’re fine. This is true for whatever button you customize to do Eye-Af, even the one that is on some lenses!

I have an A7m3, love it... but... one of my purchasing hooks was its touchscreen. I love my Olympus OMD, where I can touch the screen at the point, where I want to focus, and the camera focuses AND THEN fires immediately. This is a very iportant thing. The Sony A7m3 cannot do this. It focuses where I tap, but after that I have to push the fire button, and this takes time. A moving subject can step out from focus. This is very disapponting.

With or without a mirror, shakes will always occur if the shot is taken by hands: for almost shake-free photography, a tripod and a remote shutter-release are mandatory.

Extremely insightful! I just subscribed! I wonder if turning off Live View would've helped me recently when doing astrophotography recently since it was pitch black outside?? Or would the pitch black not allow for the camera to show me anything? I was pretty much guessing where to point the camera for my compositions!
@learningcameras6 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! It's always good to turn off live view just to eliminate any possible light leak and go with the viewfinder only. You can set a custom button to switch between using the back screen and the viewfinder only

Your talk about e-front curtain shutter has left me baffled. When you start to talk about how some lights affect that setting, then sum it up, you seem to be saying the opposite of what you originally said about it. Turn it off for less vibration issues, or on? Turn it off for sharper images, or on? Thanks!!

Hey Brother, love your videos! I actually need your expert opinion. I was looking for a versatile lens as I don't like changing lens too much. However, I do a little food vlogging, Travelling and Food photography and videography. Which lens would you suggest me? (Using A7iii)
@learningcameras5 жыл бұрын
Appreciate that! My first lens would be the Tamron 28-75 F2.8: bhpho.to/2klEbf5 It's a solid all around lens that is light/portable with a wide aperture and the most common focal lengths covered. After that I would look at what focal lengths you use the most and maybe pick up.a prime lens

Hey there, Dan. I am hoping you can help me home-in on which camera to buy. I'm a graphic design student in my senior year, and I'm wanting to incorporate a lot more high quality photos into my work. I also want to start a vlog focused on creating artwork; some of which will be shot in my studio, and some will be on-location to do some outdoor painting/drawing/etc. I'm loving the idea of being able to shoot in 4k and get really creative. So, here I am, pondering sinking what is, for me, quite a lot of money into an a7iii. Are there other options out there around the 1.5k range that _even come close_ to this? I was giving the Nikon D500 a really hard look, and I'd still be interested in going that route except for the fact that its price is, currently, so close to the a7iii that it makes sense to cough-up just a bit more for it. Also, consider that I have zero investment so far in lenses, so there's no switch-over hassle in that respect. Can we expect to see a BIG drop in price (i.e.; $300-$500) on the D500 this year as a result of a7iii dominance, or will that not happen until Nikon launches a challenge to it?

Hey! So if you are shooting video with the ways you stated, I would probably skip Nikon and instead Canon (or even Fuji) would be my 2nd choice behind Sony. Nikon is great for video on paper but in practice, they are behind with limited features, no usable autofocus, and some small issues. For photography they are great though. The Sony A6500 is another option but the A7III is a MASSIVE step up in quality and features for sure. If you can give up 4k, Canon has a few decent options although we the 6DII which is there newest camera was mostly crap and there other cameras are a few years old. The Fuji X-T2 is also worth a look. But if you can afford the A7III, there is nothing even close to matching this right now ESPECIALLY if you want to shoot video.

Dan Watson Thanks a lot for the info. After having scoured the internet for several days I actually went with a completely different option (which hopefully won't bite me in the ass): the Panasonic G85. It's not perfect, but has a lot of features and I was able to find a solid starter bundle and several decent lenses for < $1,500. If i had my way I'd go a7iii all day long, but it's just a bit too rich for my blood at the moment. My theory is that in a few years I can check the market again and either get on the Sony train then, or Panasonic will be right on par by then and I can just upgrade from within their line. The micro 4/3 dealio gave me some pause, but after a lot of research I decided it actually seemed ok. Anyways, thanks again!

Hi Dan! I understand using Electronic Front Curtain Shutter minimizes wear on the shutter since there is fewer moving parts. Does that affect the shutter actuation life of the camera? I had someone tell me that I no longer have to worry about the rated shutter actuation of my mirrorless if I just shoot on Electronic Shutter all the time.
@learningcameras6 жыл бұрын
So using full electronic shutter will indeed remove all wear and tear from the shutter however, keep in mind that this can give you flickering under artificial lights and rolling shutter if you or the subject are moving. I do use electronic shutter for my timelapses since theses are almost always in natural light and with nonmoving subjects. That means that my timelapses are not contributing to shutter wear. Electronic front curtain is different and while slightly reducing shutter wear, the affect is minimal. However it's extremely rare to see flickering or rolling shutter with electronic front curtain so I typically have this ON

Great video. I tried the setting to enable the eye auto focus but i keep getting “lens is not compatible”. I just changed all my gear to sony from nikon so i have this camera with the kit lens and i just ordered the 50mm from nikon, will i get eye auto focus when i change lens?
@tdwp9096 жыл бұрын
Ron Flores eye af should be compatible with the sony 28-70mm kit lens. If you are using an adapter for a nikon kit lens or for your 50mm nikon lens than the adapter may not support eye af.

Great video. If shooting timelapse of moving traffic is it best to have electronic shutter off? Or only for super fast moving stuff? For timelapse I would really like to use electronic shutter so this is a concern.
@learningcameras6 жыл бұрын
For timelapse rolling shutter probably will not matter even in traffic since you are using slow shutter speeds which are slower than the readout of the sensor. They only time it would be an issue is if you used faster shutter speeds to capture the timelapse of over 1/60. Feel free to test it but I doubt you would see rolling shutter from Electronic 1st curtain or full silent mode (you should use full silent mode for timelapse to not wear the shutter at all) since you are shooting with such slow shutter speeds usually

Sync speed? Does the e front curtain shut affect the sync speed when using regular studio lights? Using my new Sony A7riii in the studio yesterday with my Profoto D1 lights and air remote, I couldn't get it to sync at 250/1. I had to settle for 200/1 but it has left a grey shadow on one side, so I'm guessing that 160/1 would have been the desired setting for a perfect exposure. But that it too slow and not 250/1. Do you have any idea as to what is going on? When I say regular lights, I mean not HSS. Thanks.

Hi Dan, im currently shooting with Nikon D500 and im using this camera for video more and more. Do you think buying the Sony A7 iii will be a upgrade (i do photography and videography)
@learningcameras6 жыл бұрын
Hey! So it would be a big upgrade with video and a small upgrade for photos thanks to the full frame sensor. The big advantage will be good focusing while in live view. However, I'm surprised you wouldn't consider the Nikon Z6! It would also be an advantage in both of those areas. Other than the focus system being a bit below what Sony is doing, it's a solid camera and can still use your lenses provided you have some full frame capable glass

Hi Dan Waston My Sony A7 iii image quality has L: 10M where is 24M ? I set on RAW aspect ration is 3:2 but I don't have real 24M, any help appreciated
@learningcameras5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you are in the APSC crop mode! It goes there automatically if you have a lens that doesn't communicate properly or don't use a full frame lens or maybe you activated it manually. I use the APSC crop mode all the time for video but I don't recommend it for photos as it lowers the quality and resolution

Fyi, the Canon M50 also has eye autofocus, and it works pretty well. I have both that and the Sony a7III, and the canon just seems to have a smaller area it will track the eyes. The Sony is still better at it from my experience, but more are getting it.

Great video with lots of good information. If you shoot in AF-S mode on the A7RIII and A7III the Eye AF is automatic with no need to push a button or even map the feature to a button.
@TheElocto6 жыл бұрын
Some of the comments might not be completely accurate. Especially around live effects and eye AF. The live effects I've noticed I do not need to switch it off on previous models such as A77ii I'm using and I have noticed with others on youtube with models such as A7Rii etc. If I underexpose purposely, the moment I switch my transmitter on if I'm using off camera flash, then the live view automatically adjust so I can see the picture. Or if transmitter is already on then the live effects are automatically disabled as well. The same with Eye AF. I do not need to change the focus areas or set it to continues focus. I usually shoot with spot focus and single shot AF and simply set the Eye AF button wherever I want it and as soon as I press the button it automatically searches the entire screen and continuously focuses for as long as I hold the button down. Maybe its changed in the mkiii models and A9, but I highly doubt it.
