Thank you for another great informative video Mark. My 7IV is on order let’s hope it arrives early December as reported. I’m up grading from A7III. Main reason for upgrade is the bird eye, focusing changes and general faster performance. I’m sure there will be a lot of great reasons I have upgraded once I start using it. Thanks again and have a great new week ahead.

Great in depth overview Msrk. So so happy the A7iv is finally here. Checks all the boxes I wanted. So cool about the new sensor covering mode to prevent dust on the sensor when clanking learns. On the Sony press release video I saw the also added 11 new picture modes/styles? Can't wait for you full in depth video and more stuff about this camera. They are going to see a lot of these over the next year for sure. Gotta save up a lot of cash still to be able to get my own but someday.... keep it up.

I personally will be waiting for the A7Cii which the rumor mill says will come out late 2022. I hope the A7Cii will contain most of the features listed here for the A7iv and have a slightly larger EVF than the A7C, which I think it the main and really only truly limiting feature on the A7C. I do absolutely love the A7C and would still probably take it over even this very impressive A7iv. For me the small size makes all the difference in being able to bring it with me all the time. I use the 40mm F2.5 G lens frequently with it, and it is such a great, versatile, and powerful combination. Unfortunately for now, it looks like the 40mm F2.5 G doesn't support the new focus breathing compensation feature.

Best Sony reviews bar none, especially like the way you systematically layout the actual menu items. The A7lV looks like it's getting pretty close to the mythical "hybrid" stills/video camera, very tempted to trade the A7Rlll for this one. On my A7C, the one stand-out feature for me is its AF tracking, the way that little bounding box just sticks to whatever its placed upon.

I have A7riii a well... what ways would it be upgrade?
@chrisgibbsphoto
@chrisgibbsphoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@22s22a It'd be for my videography, everything from the proper digital audio pipeline (read: low noise) to the better video autofocus. I like the way my A7C AF Tracking sticks to the subject, that is amazing, the A7lV should be even better. As far as stills are concerned, yes its a resolution downgrade, but not enough to outweigh the benefits in the upgrades. To be honest, I'll reach for my A7C over the A7Rlll most every time, just for the features mentioned.

Yours is always the first video I look for when viewing a new camera or feature, you never really disappoint. Again this was excellent. Two things that nobody's mentioned, does it have dual gain ISO and what is the higher value 640? and is there a Voice Memo function in the camera. Thanks Mark.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
The voice memo did not make it to my pre-production camera but then none of the network settings worked on my beta firmware either. I would expect the dual gain sensor will be pitched at the 100 and 640 mark but would wait to see the camera bench tested for final confirmation on that one.

Thank you, Mark! Excellent review as usual! I don't think I will be upgrading from the A7III-- not yet anyway. Yes it is an improvement in some areas, but many are geared to video shooters and I'm a stills photographer. And as such, I consider the articulation screen a downgrade for my photography. I would prefer even more resolution for the sensor and EVF so maybe one of the R series would be a better fit for me. As for the AF, yes I know it is an improvement, but I personally have never had any issues with the AF of the A7III. Sometimes good, is good enough.

Mark. That was a badass review. I listen to the launch and reviews today, you presented lots more compelling details. I’ve a7III and a9. Which one would you recommend to be replaced as an upgrade to the a7IV?
@summonedfist
@summonedfist 2 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you use your bodies for and what you'd benefit from an a7iv. I too have the a9/a7iii combo. I use the a9 for client shoots and local wildlife and the a7iii is more travel/landscapes. I don't personally think I'd benefit enough to justify the a7iv purchase but from my perspective it would make sense to replace the a7iii with it. Here (ontario, canada) the a7iii still has a solid resell price compared to the a9.
@qwiklok
@qwiklok 2 жыл бұрын
@@summonedfist I have the A73 as well and love it. The features of the A74 are awesome. Would it make a difference for me outside of bragging rights and pride? No. Do i need insane autofocus, no, but would would be nice, except i don't have Sony G lenses, just legacy contax zeiss. Would i like it? Of course. But it would not make much of a difference overall. Not unless i turn pro videographer or something. ahhhhhh. sigh.

Take a look at this image captured with 135 prime with the aperture wide open: flic.kr/p/2n5FU6E I can force the iris to be unsharp by shooting with the 50mm f/1.2 at f/1.2 but only if I stand close enough to crop into the top of the head. Sony has also released a version 1.01 firmware to push the focus back 1/4 inch.

Hey Mark, awesome review! I currently own an a9 and some 3rd party lenses. I cannot carry lenses much larger than 3 lbs because of a previous spine fracture issue. I shoot wildlife (birds) and dogs, Im wondering if the autofocus on this a7iv (and the resolution for more aggressive cropping) would end up being a better match for me than the a9. I do not shoot for a living, just the occasional dog show gig, its mainly a very intense hobby. Would it make more sense to move into a body w more resolution for good images in apsc mode? I really would prefer to crop as opposed to carry giant lenses when out on trails and the a9 in apsc mode doesnt quite capture the detail i want. I've considered the a7riii and RIV, but 33 pxls sounds friendlier on my hard drive, bird AF a plus. Eventually ill want to purchase the 100-400 GM. Thanks Mark, absolutely love your channel.

If you photograph moving subjects then the 4x faster AF will be welcome and if you shoot video the aperture ring de-clicked will be useful. The 29% lighter weight and sharper performance may also be something worth upgrading for.

The official announcement video had an annoying voice so I switched over to your video to see the in depth features and photographic aspects of the camera, then I watched potato jets video to get a good idea of the video capabilities. I've pre ordered it and I'm going to sell my A7C. The new sensor with that extra resolution as well as the improved stabilization are probably my top reasons for upgrading. Also the added dials and joysticks do very much, I often get frustrated with the A7C due to lack of extra buttons and dials. Thanks for your great reviews, very appreciated!

I have not been able to replicates these AF errors. I regularly shoot portraits with lenses with very narrow depth of field, e.g., 50mm f/1.2 GM and 135 f/1.8 GM. If I am framing a head and shoulder portrait at maximum aperture the eyebrow, eyelashes and iris are all usually all sharp. The depth of field only becomes an issue when I crop tighter into the top of the head. In these instances if I was playing safe I would close the aperture on stop. Here is a gallery of ultra HD images you can zoom in on to check sharpness of the eyes: flic.kr/s/aHBqjzBhMv

Hi Mark, great review up to your usual thorough standard. I think I want one. It's looking like a Stella option. I had been thinking I might splurge for an a1, but had been holding off, hopefully waiting for price erosion once supply improves and the 'must have at any price' demand has been satisfied. This looks like it offers much that the a1 does without quite the same absolute speed, flash sync and rolling shutter performance etc. Are you planning a side by side review of a1 vs a7iv? I realise they are in a different segment, targeted at different users, but for enthusiastic amateurs that want pretty much the best, whilst being mindful of absolute value and "good enough" performance i.e. like me, then both options would be on my radar. I'm lucky I can afford to buy an a1, but the a7iv and a couple of nice trips to use it (or new lens etc) is a tempting alternative spend. I just sold my old a7r4 body as it didn't play that well with my 200-600mm Sony tele zoom and typically felt that 61m files (with no option, bar APS-C crop in Raw) to save a smaller lower resolution file for 'casual shooting, where file size is overkill. Also a perception that the dynamic range suffered, as did high ISO noise vs lower res sensors like a7iii and a7r3. I wanted to offload in readiness to buy an a1. I really like the speed of my a9 (for action / sport) but a.sp planned to sell that too, post buying an a1. I now suspect my best combo 'brace' would be an a1 plus an a7iv. What do you and others think? I figure if you want dual body redundancy and flexibility it's got to be (a) two x a7iv bodies, (b) two x a1 bodies or (c) an a7iv plus an a1. I'm leaning towards option (c) buying an a7iv first, seeing how well it plays vs my a9, then switching a9 out for either an a1 or second a7iv depending on my real world use and experience using a7iv. On a minor point, circa 32min in, I think you may have a small error in your spec chart for older a7iii where you attribute both card slots as speed II - you did mention verbally, earlier, that it's type II in slot one and type I in slot two. Sorry, I'm an attentive pedant.

By 'MP' I presume you mean PASM. If you have assigned camera settings to 1, 2 and 3 you should have had the Exposure mode set to P, A or M before registering the memory. I have a CAMSET on my Patreon support channel that sets up the camera for you and a 600-page eBook that outlines workflows to ensure you never miss a shot. Patreon.com/markgaler

Funny even Sony knows their lenses has heavy breathing, but they did an amazing job compesating it. The focus breathing is an compromise for make the lense much more compact than their competitors and I'm willing to go with it.

Mark, great and thorough review as always! Other than resolution, how does this camera 7IV stack up against 7RIV? Is it better than the 7R IV? Thanks for your hones opinion!
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
The A7RIV is best suited to photographers who are able to keep the ISO low, don't plan on using the FE 200-600 G (many report AF issues when using this lens on the A7RIV) and like to make prints larger than 3 feet in length or work for the advertising industry. The A7IV has better Movie specs (4:2:2: 10bit), has a more customisable body, better High ISO performance, has a larger buffer courtesy of its CFExpressType A card slot but only has half the resolution. One camera cannot claim to be better than the other as they are designed for different photographers.

Thank you for your comprehensive review and opinions. I'm hoping you could clarify your opinion of the LCDs resolution. One thing that I hate about my A7iii is that I sometimes cannot tell if my photographs are in perfect focus when looking at the LCD screen (without zooming in) due to it's very low resolution. It appears that the A7IVs LCD screen is only marginally higher in resolution. What are your thoughts about quality, sharpness and brightness when compared to the A7iii?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
It's a higher resolution Monitor but I would use the finder to review and assess image sharpness as that is more than double the resolution of the new and improved monitor.

Hi Mark: So with the 7 1V we now can have separate Fn menus for photo & videos. But can we also have separate photo and video settings stored in the memory recall mode dial where we could have for example 3 stored memory recall settings for photo as say, action, portrait and animals and 3 more memory recall settings for video that could possibly be different frame rates as we switch between our choices on the new photo, video, and S&Q mode dial ?

Only when shooting movies in full frame 30p in my opinion. It's fine at 60p in Super 35 mode and for stills it is a none issue because you are using the mechanical shutter.

Great review Mark! This will be my next camera for sure....i have a question...most of time i shooting in raw+ jpeg mode,and on slot 2 is jpeg files...is it possible to select slot 2 as a playback media option? Its so much faster for file preview....every time that i select slot 2 ,it reset to slot 1...is there some workaround? Thank you.

Thanks for another incisive video Mark. One question: How is the camera for shutter distortion in silent mode? I have an A9 for my sport and an A7RIII as backup, which copes with distortion, but only in mechanical shutter mode. I’m seriously considering the A7IV as my 2nd camera for my sport work (Rugby League), if it copes with this scenario. I love the 33 megapixels of the A7IV, as it harks back to my days with the original A7R, with which I got many of my best shots - outside of sports. Thanks again 🙏
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
First off - I would not recommend shooting in silent mode for Action/Sports as this camera will be no better than an A7III or any other with a conventional sensor. The only camera's I recommend for shooting action/sports with using the electronic shutter are the cameras featuring stacked sensors (A9, A9II and A1).

Hi. Can you fill buffer with photos and in the same Time switch to video and record a movie, without waiting for the clearing a buffer?

If you assign Slot 2 for movies and Slot 1 for stills this should be possible but the buffer was clearing to CF express card so quickly you never really have to wait for the buffer to clear before doing anything.

Fantastic review and detail - it's clear you know what you're talking about and I've subscribed as a result. Thanks! How much better is the viewfinder as compared to an A7III? Coming from a DSLR, the viewfinder was a big adjustment. It's especially poor on the A7III when shooting with AF-C (which is basically always because of little kids moving around). It looks ok when viewing, but then when half-pressed it drops resolution quite a bit. Doesn't happen in AF-S, and I imagine it's because the processor couldn't keep up?

@@AlphaCreativeSkills when it drops while focusing, is it still noticeably better? Or put another way (or as an another option) - when it drops in resolution, is it comparable then to the A7III when it doesn't drop the resolution?

Fantastic work as always! Straight facts and easy to digest. One question though: Does the anti-dust function technically also add to the wear and tear for the shutter? Would it close as I turn off the camera, or only when I swap lenses?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
It closes each time you power the camera down (if you activate the feature) whether you are changing lenses or not. I would hope that Sony are confident about the shutter they have put in the A7IV as they won't want the bad press they received from some users who experienced shutter failure with the A7III.

Hey Mark, nice video. I have the A6600, primarily for wildlife, and while I like it after shooting the Canon R5, I want a FF with more pixels for cropping. I also want at least 10fps mechanical or electronic and no rolling shutter. if the AF on the IV is that much better than the A6600 then a lower fps might be ok? The A9x and A1 are out of my budget. I've also thought about the 7RIII but it's AF is old now. Any thoughts on a Sony FF that might work for my case or possibly an upgraded A6600 from Sony?
@AlphaCreativeSkills

If you want no rolling shutter when shooting sport/action silently I recommend a 2nd hand A9. If the camera has only been used to shoot sport it may have very few clicks using the mechanical shutter. Nothing to wear out.
