I'm a bit confused by the conclusion, as applied to still photography. I don't do much video so I am interested mainly in stills. I currently have the a6000 but have been considering upgrading to FF, and the a7c looks like a good upgrade path, given the similar benefit of smaller size and weight. But I don't like how the a7c has a kind of crummy EVF, so I was also looking at the a7iii. Now, with the a7iv, there is another consideration. You mentioned that at higher ISOs, the a7iv is sharper and has better colour than the a7c. And it seemed like you were saying overall differences in usable high ISO are not that great. To me, one advantage of moving to FF would be the low light capability. When high ISO capability and IBIS and a fast lens are combined, it can be incredible how dark a scene can be photographed without flash. So, would the main conclusion be that, for stills, there isn't much difference between the a7c and a7iv at ISO 12,800 or 25,600 ? If so, then the a7iv is much more appealing to me, given the higher resolution and better EVF.
@dbvares87452 жыл бұрын
Hey GN, thanks for the comment and the very good questions. I'm rarely shooting stills but with that caveat aside I think your analysis is right. The advantage with stills is if you have noise there's only one frame to worry about rather than continuous frames and moving noise as in videos. Therefore given slightly smaller and more noticeable noise in those mid/high ISO ranges are the only real downside for the A7iv I'd say it will work better for the use case you describe than the a7c. hope that helps! Hello from Ukraine. I have a sony a7c and I am considering buying a74. There are a couple of questions for you, if you answer, put a heart so that I know. 1. In your night shots, which are stabilized with the help of a Catalyst Browser, the lights are not distorted when I shoot 4K 25 with my a7c at any shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/400, my light sources are distorted and twitch, why is that? 2. I've been looking for a test of active stabilization in the dark at 1/50 for a long time, judging by your video, does it work well in such conditions?
@dbvares87452 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the good questions:) Light flicker is to do with the electrical output of lights; in the uk most mains electricity is 50hz so 1/50 will sync to the light flicker and avoid flicker problem in video. If the rate is different in Ukraine a different shutter speed may be needed. I talk a bit more on light flicker in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXi2Ymp5rpp0hac On Q2, yes all the vlog type footage you saw was active steadyshot at 1/50 and I think if you hold the camera steady and try to walk smoothly the results can be really good:) Hope that helps! Very good and honest comparison. I like my a7c. A7iv seems good for a 33mp sensor. I was expecting worse result from high mp sensor. But many persons have confirm the a7c is better for low noise in photo in low light condition. Which is logical to my opinion. And a7iv of course improve on autofocus, format, resolution so can bring more details. But noise are important and sony a7c is a very good photo and video camera. Just with the right specs.

Excellent comparision..sony a7c is a good option with good price and lowlight iso performance but one thing still bothers me about not having full mechanical shutter which will effect bokeh.
@CC-gt3ro2 жыл бұрын
I have a7c. Bokeh is super nice with my tamron 17-28 f2.8 and naturally with a good zoom like tamron 70-300. You should see the pictures you can make with this camera…sometime outside for wildlife i also use the electronic shutter in silent mode for wildlife and you can go 1/8000 in this mode. I deactivate silent mode for anything else especially in interior as light would create strip on the picture. In normal mode you can shoot anything you want and bokeh are always superb, full well rounded. The lens is important of course. I choose the 17-28 it is high quality. And the 70-300 is sharp and pictures are really good with superb bokeh.

A7c has mechanical shutter this is why i don’t get stip on my pictures with halogen lamp. One time i lost my pictures because i used the silent mode inside with the lamp. DB, any idea if Sony will ever release an A7C II? And does KZbin compression make a noticeable enough dent in professionally graded 600Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 ALL-I footage from the A7IV that it wouldn't necessarily look better than if the 8-bit 4:2:0 100Mbps footage from an A7C was simply converted, exported, and uploaded to KZbin straight out of camera at 4K24 or 4K30? I'm geniunely curious, because if I can go with an A7C, I could keep that on my Crane M3 gimbal and just use the APS-C lenses I already have. They're still E-mount and IIRC shooting video in crop mode still gives you 4000x2666 pixels out of the total 6000x4000 to work with. And that will be downsampled to 3840x2160, if my understanding is correct.
@dbvares87452 жыл бұрын
Hey Sai, so very interest Qs there! I think the a7ii may well arrive but only in a few years when it's economical and production-wise cheap and easy to miniaturise the a7iv core components and when the a7c features are too dated to command that $1500-$2000 price point. It's hard to be definitive on how good footage will look once processed through different routes, but it's fair to say if you're mainly targeting YT then unless the audience is pro cinematogrpahers, colourists etc many won't notice huge differences in image qwuality but will focus more on content. The higher quality footage is used as an input the more quality will make it through any compression or such, but I suspect the noticeable difference is on a diminishing returns type pattern. As for crop mode - I tend to agree. I've done a lot in crop mode on both a7c and a7iv and never had issues (nor had anyone spot issues) in footage quality so I think Sony does a good job delivering cropped 4k on their full frame sensors. It's not about ''LOW MP SENSOR VERSUS HIGH MP SENSOR'' that determines the base low light performance of a sensor... It's the size of the individual pixels that determine the base performance of a sensor. The higher the pixel pitch, the more light the sensor will gather and the more light the sensor gathers the better the base low light performance will be. Now there's also a few other factors that get thrown into the ''low light performance calculator'' but the pixel size aka. pixel pitch is the main, the biggest and most accurate indicator of how well a sensor will perform in low light situations/conditions. For example, the a7IV has a pixel pitch of about 25.88 square micrometers, while a camera like the a7slll has a pixel pitch of 70.55 square micrometers, so it's pretty obvious that the sensor on the a7slll will be able to gather way more light than the sensor on the a7IV, as it has almost three times larger pixels than the sensor in the a7IV. Most Full Frame sensors are 24x36 millimeters in size, so the more pixels you put on that 24x36mm sensor surface, the smaller the pixels will need to be to fit onto that surface. The pixel size of a sensor in relation to its low light performance also depends on the type of the sensor, for example, if it's a backside illuminated sensor, you can squeeze in more resolution without losing on low light performance. So if we have a 20MP CMOS sensor and a 25MP BSI sensor, they will perform about the same in low light situations/conditions, despite the BSI sensor having smaller pixels - all thanks to the sensor being backside illuminated!
@CC-gt3ro2 жыл бұрын
I think sony has reveal a new layout where they will stack the photodiode. So on the next camera like a futur a7cii i could see a 24mp sensor again but with better low light performance than a7siii. The photodiode will take the entire surface. We will see. It could be very interesting.
@nogerboher52662 жыл бұрын

Noise wise I think a7c is definitely cleaner; at least for video - I rarely do photography tbh From my perspective I’d have love 24 or even 20 megapixel a7iv for even better low light but I understand why they went a different route. It’s still good enough for me in all realistic situations. And while I’d love to keep my a7c too I’m not sure my wallet can justify it 😂

I have a question, you are making a review of a camera and your video qualiy is super bad due to low bitrate. why? I suggest you move the export bitrate on minimum 100 in h264

The a74 has dual iso the a7c has not. This counts for much more than a few mpixel difference.

It does

Agree the dual iso definitely helps, but of course the absolute amount of noise you can spot remains key also so I'm always curious to compare at multiple ISO levels:) Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day!

For months and months, I've been wondering what philosophy on YT would sound and feel like... now I know. But why so many sequences and montage cuts, with weird colours and meaningless framing angles, when a single shot coud have done it ? Still wondering. The beauty of philosophy, most probably.

And indeed was it philosophy or an abortive at attempt landing in self satire? I don’t even know myself 😂 But some interesting stuff here and a good read:) Thanks for watching Giles, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👍

@@dbvares8745 I thought I've had done it... well no. Too much self-confidence probably, and not enough philosophy. Probably. Still, we can discuss and argue about probabilities... 🤣

Haha - good old 480p. That was the standard for big screen tv back in the day - funny how we've moved on isn't it:) Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day!

@@dbvares8745 so true, we've trained our eyes for 1080 and 4k already. I fixed the advanced settings and got 1080 now. great vid.

We all know that a7iv is a better camera than a7c, and it's really comical that you had to emphasize that every 10 seconds. Is the sale of the new model going so bad ...
@CC-gt3ro2 жыл бұрын
It is not a better camera. It has some criterias advantages but that’s it. The a7c has better low light performance especially in photos, as many can confirm that and the a7c is more lightweight. I also prefer the evf on the left so my noise don’t touch the camera body. A7c silver edition is nicer too. It fits more easily on gimbals. It is of course less expensive. These criterias are important. The a7iv does not win on all criterias. A7c has its place, and it is the best sony hybrid compact camera to my opinion.
@dbvares87452 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do think it’s true the a7iv is not best in every category - think I did cover the tradeoffs in the video including around straight out of camera noise. For me as a left the a7c is terrible though 😂 Bottom line is the a7iv has numerous but not comprehensive advantages and re a7c also has a bunch of advantages-which is why individual use case is so key! Interesting discussion and hope you both have a great day 💪
