I own the Fujifilm X-H2s. I've been a pro photographer my whole life, 66 years. I would not trade this camera for any other camera in the world. I had a Fujifilm XT4 and Canon R7, and sold them both, after testing the 3 in open shade, sun light, and low light. Fujifilm X-H2s was the best of all in all situations. I like it so much; I bought a second one.

Im looking to buy either one of these. I like Fuji better but have seen a lot of complaining about the autofocus firmware updates making it worse over time. What do you think? Im new but want a hybrid I can grow into. Decaused ago I had Nikon F5 old school film, (funny huh). Looking forward to new camera. Thanks ahead for your advise/opinion. Appreciate.

I own an xh2s and i came here to watch the comparison because the autofocus on fujifilm is a nightmare. I think my old nikon d90 could compete. Tracking on the video is awful. Using mostly with native 33mm f1.4 with linear motor and viltrox 75 1.2.

I was planning to sell my A7III then switch to the SH2s, after seeing this video I'll simply upgrade to 7IV. Shooting speed is not important but low light performance which is better on the Sony is, so I'll simply stick with Sony. Hey! I have been waiting for the a7iv for a few years now, but still haven't purchased it. Now that I've waited this long, rumors about the Nikon Z6iii abound. It's funny, because I was going to get the Z6ii, but then the a7iv finally came out! I cannot see the Nikon not having better specs than the a7iv, especially after this much time has passed? So basically, I was wondering if the Z6iii is on your radar, or have you already purchased the Sony? Thanks!
@TheHybridShooter
@TheHybridShooter Жыл бұрын
@@Tricklarock I can easily imagine Z6 III not performing as well as A7 IV. Nikon can only go as far as the Sony will let them by providing sensors and other technology. Nikon is pretty much just trying to stay close enough to Sony to prevent loyal users from switching, so I can't say that my expectations are particularly high.
@Tricklarock

@@TheHybridShooter I'm afraid that I agree. I was already wondering about them using Sony sensors, therefore their tech, and how that plays out! I have some Nikon glass, but I'd still need an adapter for the Z6, so I might as well just get one for the Sony?! You have any idea how far firmware can take the a7iv? Far enough to get rid of crop 60p? Thanks for the response!

Revisited this upload a week later to A/B both again. Second time around I was surprised that on most of the pictures I preferred the Sony colors, especially the blues. I also remembered how much I dislike Sony's in-EVF implementation of their settings and icons. The first time I tried a Canon it was like my eyes were treated to some sort of Willy Wonka secret blend :D. Nitpicking with zero impact on final output but something Fuji gets right and Sony should revisit. For my personal use-case the cost of cheaper/smaller options is also a factor. With 6 children who all also are engaged in photography, along with an A7iv, getting a used A7iii and used Tammy glass still seems like a better direction than an X-T3/4 with similar lenses. Thanks again for the useful video! I checked out the location you are in... what a beautiful place to photograph... and within driving distance of some of the most spectacular Europe has to offer!

Wow! Excellent comparison. I think this has settled it for me. The low light abilities of the Sony is too important for me to ignore in hopes to have a second stacked sensor camera. @@Shawns_snapshots I agree about the mk1 but because I had the A9, I sadly experienced some things with the camera that I did not like: 1) UHS-1 in slot 2; 2) 5 fps for mechanical; and 3) no flicker control option. I think Fujifilm simulation are a big plus. I am a predominately Sony user, who dabbled in Fujifilm as a second system in the past. Recently on curating my library of pictures and videos, I loved the images and colors that came from my now sold Fujifilm system. Considering the stack sensor and the almost complete feature set, I have just ordered the X-H2S. For the people who spend a vast amount of time zooming into every section of their pictures and videos up, the Sony is the clear choice. For me, I will be using the X-H2S as my main camera, relegating my 2 Sony A7RIII and an A7RIV to landscape or low light static situations. There is of course the really excellent Sony lenses like the 12-24 GM, 35GM, 135GM and the Tamron 35-1502-2.8 that do not have an equivalent in the Fujifilm universe. The reason for this change, is that I ran into the Sony sensor readout limitations as I gained more experience with them. I started noticing distortions in silent shutter situations and videos as well. Unfortunately with the exception of the Sony A1, the sensor readout on the newer Sony cameras including the A7 IV and the A7R V have gotten worse or remained the same. Thus making an upgrade to the latest Sony a compromise over the older models. Unfortunately the Sony A1 is quite pricey and the A9 series is not yet updated.

@TheHybridShooter
@TheHybridShooter 2 жыл бұрын
Not really, it is a lot more expansive than other crop sensor cameras, so it doesn't really compete with them. There is no comparison with GH6, X-H2s is superior in basically every way.
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter GH6 is only recommendable to someone *heavy* into anamorphic, since the 4:3 aspect is more correct for that than the 3:2 of the Fuji. I still would use the Fuji with the lenses made for it. Especially since the GH6 is sooooo overpriced, would never pay more than €1500 for a micro four thirds camera, but with APS-C there's no limit if it fits my use.

Why wouldn't anybody be a fan? Prints don't get printed as square pixels but as dots, you aren't going to see much difference between full frame and M43 so it's 95% of the image for a fraction of the cost. I can live with that. Plus hybrid shooter isn't a wildlife shooter so he's unlikely to pick up a camera unless it suits his use case) travel, content creation etc. I would also like to see the OM1 reviewed but appreciate it won't happen on this channel for the above reasons.

I'm still waiting for Lumix to announce a replacement for the G9, GH6 doesn't suits my needs and OM System OM-1 is not as fast as I would like it to be( I mainly shoot motorsport). I've bought the G9 after I saw your review on that camera, and I haven't regret a second that purchase. But at this moment I feel the need to change the camera, I would like to jump to a more profesional sports camera, such as Z9, R3 or A9ii, but the budget doesn't allow me to make the switch, and then this Fuji came to my attention. Looks like the perfect camera for my needs, also the lens doesn't cost a fortune, I might need to take this camera for a weekend and test it out.

Thank you so very much for creating this comparison video between these two cameras. I sold the full frame Canon DSLR 5D Mark III and the lens collection to get the Fuji X-H1 due to the weight, dynamic range and the feel of the Fuji language; however, soon realized that the reliability of auto focus in photo and video mode, high ISO noise, inability to focus in dark environment, file format in Light Room, battery life even with three batteries with a grip and WHAT IN THE WORLD is the Boot mode for since it can only perform the best in this mode?! I waited for four years for Fuji to update the X-H1 while wondering if I should of purchased the A7III that was released at the same price as the X-H1 even though E-Mount lenses was heavy, big and expansive (though I would get Sony special pricing as I was working in a camera store). Four years later after watching many comparison reviews especially this review, as of yesterday I had purchased the A7IV with Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 & 28-75 f/2.8 G2, shot a photo/video session for the city and wishing that I bought the A7III four years ago. Sure, it does not have the "Fuji feel" during the shoot which is very unique ;however, it also does not have the "Fuji feel" of pain when worrying about battery life, unreliable focus images, dealing with Fuji video or RAW file in Lightroom while painfully seeing noise after ISO 3200 even in average lighting. With these Tamron lenses, the setup is actually lighter in hand and still have 80% battery left after the session which Fuji would have used up one and half it's small batteries. Tried a few images at ISO 12,800 AND 40,000 in extreme dark condition where even I have no idea what the subject looks like and the image turns out very acceptable even handheld at 1/10s at 75mm. Thanks again for making video like this to help people like me to make the right decision for the equipment.

Finally a thorough comparison between these 2 cameras. I have been watching reviews for both cameras as I intend to upgrade from my sony A6000 to either sony a7iv or fuji xh2s. I wanted to jump to fuji system to keep my lens options significantly cheaper (aps-c). However, I’d be much using it to film wedding, and will be sticking to 60 fps, & i dont mind the crop factor on sony, so I guess I will stick with sony. After all, it’s the autofocus reliability & the fact I can use my current aps-c lenses for most video works on the a7iv. Sony is really killing it these days. Of course when I priced out the body+lenses I’d prefer it was more like buying a car than a camera. Love your reviews. But maybe a thought or two on the price factor? Fuji will need the newest lenses to exploit the added speed or pixel density coming soon. But compared to full frame prices it still seems to be a lot cheaper to build a strong Fuji kit especially with used gear. Also It looked like you used the 16-55mm a lot for this review. Do you think it kept up speed/image quality wise? Do you think it will perform on a 40mp sensor? I want to invest in lenses with the longest future.

Sony kit should not be more expensive if you take equivalence into consideration, in fact it should be cheaper if you are taking third party options into consideration as well. Unfortunately there is no good 24-70 F4 option on Sony (old Zeiss is poor) but something like Tamron 28-75 F2.8 is still cheaper than Fuji 16-55. It depends on exact lenses you need, but in general lenses for Sony FF are not more expensive than Fuji APS-C equivalent.

@@tomapaunovic "When I priced out the body+lenses I'd prefer" is what I wrote - there are 3rd party lenses for both systems that are like $100 or even a little less but they bring their own issues (and aren't my preference even if I own some and they are great). Equivalence is only relevant if you are trying to produce an identical depth of field and field of view on both systems (that is to say, identical pictures), but frankly who is getting into full frame to buy a bunch of F4 zooms? I sure as heck wouldn't even if the FF sensor was a little better in low light. The reviewer chose to compare a full frame camera to an APS-C camera (which are the same price, I know), when Sony also also makes APS-C cameras. So, this is either a testament to how good Fuji is for keeping up, or how bad Sony is for not blowing Fuji out of the water. Therefore, I think the price factor is an important thing to add to the discussion. Any price advantage of Fuji glass (or bodies) are irrelevant if old lenses can't keep up with new bodies, and any superior performance of Sony is frankly irrelevant if the cost of getting that extra performance is multiples of an APS-C option.

@@matt88169 When talking lenses, I think it's really important to figure out what are your needs in terms of FoV and DoF and image quality and then go shopping lenses. High-quality F4 zooms on FF were always really popular, especially among landscape photographers. And it makes a lot of sense, why would you pay more and carry more weight if most of your images are F8/F11. IMHO it would be great if we had even narrower apperture lenses for such use cases. Canon is releasing some of those for RF mount, but those were mostly gimped in some other areas. If you need a DoF of FF 2.8 then that would require big lenses, but that's still your best option since APS-C 1.8 are almost nonexistant, except for Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 who are really big and have limited range.

I need something that can Record 4K to SD card and still output HDMI 4k to a field monitor. My Sony FDR-AX53 can record 4k to SD card but cannot output 4k HDMI at the same time. Hi, I am happy Sony owner and I have also had an XT30 in the past. The thing that I most context in the Fuji autofocus system is the management of the the hooking of the eye. With Sony, in a group of people, with AFC you have several ways to lock onto the subject you want. With Fuji, in AFC mode, it is the camera that chooses who to hook and then you have to change the choice. Have they improved anything in this regard with this new X-H2S? Thank you.

I really appreciate the compactness of the system, especially when travelling. Wonderfully well-balanced overview as always, thanks! Having only rented an A7III for 2 weeks, how adjustable are the Sony in-camera colors? On Canon, I had quite a bit of control over the Jpeg output, is Sony similar? In the picture of the Gimbal and Trees, I think it captures the difference I see and so enjoy in Fuji Colors... black is darker (contrast) and the trees (greens) look more natural or perhaps more similar to Nikon on the Fuji. Could this be changed and applied globally on a Sony? Obviously this wouldn't impact Raw output. Lastly, is the round control 4-way selector not a wheel, a-la Canon, on the Sony? I thought it was , but can't remember. I think if Fuji had kept their dial buttons I might be choosing an X-H2 when it drops, but still think between the low light performance, lens selection (used!), and customization, the Sony would suit me better (especially primarily for photography with little video use). Thanks again!

Good review. I am the owner of a Sony A7 IV, and I would have been a bit more critical about my camera because the autofocus isn't always perfect, but it's good enough most of the time. I feel like this video is a good explanation of why the Sony A1 is an overpriced camera. The autofocus advantages are mostly about the software and lenses, but you can't get the advantages of a stacked sensor with software. It's so sad that camera manufacturers don't allow you to write your own autofocusing algorithms. Also, the inability to write raw video footage is a software limitation. It could be incredible if one of the big camera manufacturers provided a camera as a platform for software developers because there is so much stuff that we could implement: encryption, real-time synchronization with photo editing software, autofocusing algorithms, new automatic white balance selection algorithms, wireless streaming on KZbin and other platforms, golden hour notification, automatic DOF calculations, etc.

Great video, thanks for the very detailed insights. A couple of questions: - How does Sony's Super 35 mode rolling shutter compare with the X-H2? Is it still worse? - Were the images JPEGs or raw? Lightroom generally produces less sharp results with X-Trans raws, so that could be a factor to consider.
@TheHybridShooter
@TheHybridShooter 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I haven't tested the Super35 rolling shutter, but it won't be as good as with stacked sensor. Images are mostly RAWs, LR doesn't really degrade X-Trans RAWs anymore, it has been vastly improved in later version. I also use enhance function in comparison shots, which fixes it completely.

The Rolling Shutter in APSC mode is 13ms. Better than the extremely high 26,8 in full frame but still not very good even for APSC. The Fuji is a low 9.7ms even in the 6.2K 3:2 14bit mode using the entire sensor. You get down to 5.3ms in regular 12bit 4K60fps mode and as low as 3.2ms in 4K120fps. This is quite amazing so if you plan on using the camera handheld a lot or on a gimbal the Fuji is vastly superior to the A7IV for this purpose. As an other example the Panasonic S5 is 10.5ms in APSC mode (21ms in full frame) using the old sensor found in the A7III among many other older cameras. You could say the A7IV is taking a step back in rolling shutter performance performing worse than last generation cameras so if this is important to your work I'd consider going for a camera with faster read out speed. As another example from the world of professional cinema cameras the brand spanking new Alexa 35 does 7.9ms in it's open gate mode 3:2 4608×3164 and 5.7ms in 4.6K 16:9 mode. So the Fuji is doing really good even compared to a beast like the new Alexa. (The older Alexa sensor in the Alexa classic camera does 7.2ms in 2K DCI)
@TheHybridShooter
@TheHybridShooter 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fedorevsky 26,8 is not extremely high by any means, it is completely fine for *real-world* use. Rolling shutter is always a big topic in initial reviews and then everybody forgets about. It was a big topic with A7 III as well and then nobody talked about it for 3 years, because is simply won't ruin your footage and it won't be visible in 99.8% of real-world footage. A7 IV has much higher downsampling rate than A7 III or S5, so not being significantly worse is a success for A7 IV. TLDR if you are filming bullet trains, get a camera with stacked sensor, if you are shooting normal stuff, don't worry about rolling shutter on A7 IV, it definitely isn't extreme like on ESO M50 or A6300.
@Fedorevsky
@Fedorevsky 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter I find that high of a rolling shutter unusable for handheld video. Especially for professional work. You get the dreaded jello effect and really badly. Works fine for use on a tripod like you mention. More than fine. But that's not everyone's work situation. That's why i mentioned specifically that it's bad for handheld use. It really is a very high rolling shutter number compared to what is becoming the norm on the new generation of cameras. This doesn't have to be a problem. It all depends on what work you do. If you shoot a lot of handheld video for example for documentary use it's going to be a visible problem 99,8% of the time. The opposite of if you shoot on a tripod all the time. I speak from experience from shooting projects for years with full frame cameras with similar or slightly better rolling shutter in which we chose to always shoot in APSC mode for the handheld work for this reason. Now we use the A7SIII for full frame handheld work for the same reason. Sometimes we shoot with Panasonic full frame handheld if that's the only cameras we brought for a certain job but then only in the APSC mode. I'm only trying to warn the guy in case he planned to shoot a lot of handheld video in full frame and generally moving the camera around a lot. After all he asked for the rolling shutter performance. Planning to use the camera handheld for video is usually why someone asks about that. This is the only major problem with the camera. In all other usage it's amazing! Especially for the price.
@TheHybridShooter
@TheHybridShooter 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fedorevsky I also speak from my 4 years of experience with both A7 III and A7 IV. I have never had a single handheld shot ruined by the rolling shutter. I had to fix a couple of shots from moving vehicles by applying rolling shutter repair, but that's about it. In reality you will "run out" of stabilisation long before you will be able to see rolling shutter in handheld shots, so I suspect that you may be confusing IBIS / OIS "jello" with rolling shutter. I can't imagine handheld shot that will be ruined by rolling shutter before it will be ruined by the handheld movement itself. My advice after long-term experience is still the same, unless he is filming something very specific, there is no need to be concerned about rolling shutter on A7 IV at all.

That's a rather complete test comparison! Thanks for that. I do have the impression that you pushed the Fuji a little more than the Sony though. In many pics, especially at the beginning of the video, the quality seem to be rather poor on the Fuji while close to perfect on the Sony (for example the Freewell filter box at 1:51) which seems way better on the Sony and far from professional grade on the XH2S As a Fuji User, on an XT3, most of my pics are great even when handheld. Given that we buy a camera to vet great pictures quality and not blurry ones, I am tempted to say that the Sony is better, while I am pretty sure that the difference is not that huge. If it is, then Fuji is in a serious danger. Regarding depth of field, it's clear that Sony is better, FF is helping a lot here. I am sorry, I might be a little too critical here, but it feels that you have your favorite here. Nothing wrong with that though, we all have our preferences :)

Thank you for your feedback, but I don't understand any of it. How is it possible to push Fuji a little more, especially in side-by-side shots? As you can see in the file name, I have even used enhance function in Lightroom on Fuji shot to minimize any possible processing IQ losses. Visible difference at 300% magnification doesn't mean that the IQ on Fuji is not good enough. I am no offense, but I don't think that am the one who has a favorite here.

Very good and rigorous review. I'm still puzzled about that elusive "full-frame look", but I'm well versed in what is to me a much more concrete and impactful aspect of Fuji images you completely gloss over: the judicious implementation and easy customizability of the best and most versatile film simulations, making a JPEG workflow MUCH simpler and its results more pleasing. Even in video, I'm fairly certain that the "Eterna look" trumps any theoretical FF look. I realize that a lot of amateurs still think there is virtue in wasting hours tweaking RAW images in Lightroom, but that is something I gladly abandoned and will never regret after moving from Canon to Fuji. My two cents. YMMV
@TheHybridShooter

I have talked about film simulations in many previous videos, it is not possible to cover everything here. I most definitely don't agree that shooting RAW is an amateur think to do :) Most people who use this kind of cameras shoot RAW, so film simulations are more like a side option for fun. Eterna has nothing to do with full frame look, you can also use various semi-flat picture styles on A7 IV.
