I received my A7r and Voigtlander 40 mm. I have to say I love this set up. At first I was a bit shocked at the loud shutter sound but after a few shots it doesn't sound so bad now. The pairing of this 40 mm lens really works well. I am now waiting for my Voigtlander 75 mm lens. Maybe I will purchase a 50 mm and that will complete this kit. Thanks for the informative video.

I got a Sony Alpha A7 for the express purpose of using adapted lenses, and it has been working very well for me. Most of the lenses I have are M42 thread mount but also a few Pentax-K. The Voigtländer 40mm F2 Ultron, used with a Novoflex M42 adapter, has quickly become a favorite. SLR lenses require a larger adapter than rangefinder lenses, so the camera becomes not quite as compact -- but still similar in size to an actual 35mm SLR, which is not bad at all. A plus is that wide angle lenses, like my Carl Zeiss Jena 20mm F4 Flektogon (which is also excellent), don't produce the vignetting problems that some have experienced when using rangefinder lenses.

Just a note for others using the Voigtlander lenses on the A7R. I have done quite a bit of critical testing of several lenses on this back. And since in my photography business I have little use for prints any SMALLER than 36", I have to be very critical. The Voigtlander 28mm f1.9 and the 35mm f1.7 in M39 (leica screw mount) perform as if they were made for the camera. Both have virtually no vignetting (very slight until f4 on 28, none on 35), are very sharp and capable of high resolution, and, amazingly, exhibit virtually no CA's or purple fringing, even into strong light behind trees, looking at 100% crops in PS. Contrast does drop when I got the 35 pointed toward the sun in some cases. High detail near the edges is abit soft at apertures f4 and wider, but this is true of most lenses (except 50mm to about 200mm),particularly wide angles. My Voigt 35mm f1.7 Ultron was much better in critical work optically than the Sony 35mm lens made for the camera, though the Sony 35mm that I tested was still quite good. I found that the Sony 35mm did have a problem with CA's (chormatic aberrations) in high contrast bright situations, such as the light behind trees. BTW, problems with CA's and fringing go back to film. Most people just haven't been noticing because they don't do large prints, and when they did they didn't expect 35mm to look like medium format or a 4x5 shot. But since I have been doing this for many years, I do notice. These cameras, tha A7, A7R, and the 30+ mp Nikons are showing the flaws of many very good lenses..... ,

I started with rangefinder cameras using Leica, Zeiss, and Voigtlander m-mount lenses. I later bought a Sony Nex 7 mirrorless camera and a voigtlander sony to m-mount adapter. I can now load about 20 different lenses on my digital camera. They are sharp, fast, and easy to use. If you don't want to play with manual focus put it on f8 or higher, focus once, and shoot away. I get exceptional results. I shoot most everything in manual. I only have one Sony lens (18-55mm) just to try out some auto features.

I am using an old Super Takumar 55mm f-1.8 lens m42 mounted and adapted to my canon adaptor. Works flawless and does great photos and video. I use focus peaking and image mag for adjust focus and it works fine. Much cheaper lenses but the quality of the old Super Takumar is pretty top notch. I have some newer Takumars and they are not as good as the old m42 mounted. They don't have many 1.4 lenses for those. Wish they had made more. I do have a Porst 28mm in f-2.8 that is pretty good too. Also m42 mount adapted to my canon then to my Sony A7R. I also got one of those auto zoom from the A7 Kit and that lens is actually pretty damn good for a kit lens. Much better than most.

I still like my Takumar Lenses better but I do have a 40mm 1.4 Voigtlander lens with a manual close focus adapter. So I now I can focus much closer than the stock lens can do. It is a soft lens and I will keep it for now but I don't use it much. I just wished the Takumar lenses had 9 or more blades vs the 6 or 8. I really like my Rokkor Lens. The 58mm 1.4. It too has only 8 blades but is a nice quality lens. Looking to find a nice Zeiss lens m mount to try on my close focus adapter.

The pronunciation is 'Fohgtlander'. It is a kind of linguistic atavism; the oi is not a diphthong (that's eu or äu in German) but I think it's called a length mark. That kind of thing is only retained in proper names any more. Sometimes it's also an 'e' like in the town of 'Soest', pronounced 'Sohst'.

If I get one, this is exactly what I'll be doing with it, though mainly with Leica glass. I used to have some CVs, the 28/2 and 50/1.1, and they're very well built. The 28 didn't wow me. It was a little soft but the 50 "Noktilux" I got was very nice and I used it a ton for the low light stuff I was doing at the time. I wouldn't say they're built as well as Leica but they're up there. It is of obvious Japanese fit and finish much like the manual focus Nikon lenses which is saying a lot. After all, this is the same factory that makes the Zeiss RF lenses.

Just another note. Craig, you really aren't worried about purple or magenta color casts or severe vignetting. Frankly, almost everyone else is. And since the only really good use for a 36mp camera is the ability to produce not just stunning 36" prints, but, with proper post processing, stunning 72-84" prints. Magenta color casts are fatal to the quality of a large print, if not removed by something like Cornerfix. Frankly, I don't like having to waste my time on this type of post processing work. That is great for hobbyists or "tweakers", but not for the average person who wants a nice picture, or the pro who wants to process efficiently. Of course, these cameras were not even really made for the average person as any kind of replacement for a DSLR. Their forte' (in stills) is very high quality, very carefully focused shooting for large format prints. Anything less, and most DSLR's will easily handle up to 36" prints, given careful technique and carefully selected lenses. I was producing high quality prints as large as 36", even with cropping from the original 6mp Digital Rebel. 1700 - $2300 just to use legacy lenses is not really a good reason for someone to buy one of these. Enlarging to the level that you can see a difference on paper, canvas, or a mural is what 24-36 mp is useful for.

Seriously what camera and lens are you filming this with in 2014 that looks that good. It looks better then 99 percent of any videos I see today on KZbin in 2018. I'm not even joking. The video is superb and clean and tack sharp.blows my mind that cameras that cost 3500 dollars still to me don't produce better videos then even a simple go pro most of the time. I'm sure some of it is the person using the camera but even with my sony A7ii, I actually preferred the go pro quality I was getting more at 1080 at the time then the 1080 out of a full frame sensor. Blows my mind. Even cell phones are getting to the point where we all need to be worried. There is a camera coming out this year that is carrying 42 megapixels. Same as the A7R series. I mean come on. That's insane. Whether you can shoot raw or not won't matter with all the image software and downloadable content on android you can use so many tools to edit any kind of content and make it amazing quality anymore. It's still not quite there but it will he in a few years at best. And honestly camera quality isn't getting any better only better features to help make your shooting easier. But 24 megapixels is still only 24 megapixels which I guess we will be stuck with this image quality forever if they choose not to go bigger. Maybe they will find a way for better dynamic range and other small things but I really feel like if they don't innovate harder and faster and lower costs of camera equipment they will find that soon people will just have their friends shoot their weddings for free and upload it all on their social media outlets and save money. Everyone has their phome in their hands and even block the photographers and videographers to capture a fucking cell phone shot. Like come on Really. But that's the age we live in. Who can be the first to upload it to Facebook and get the first set of immediate reactions. This world is totally fucked. Lol

Also, since the Nex 7 is an aps-c sensor camera I don't worry about vignetting since it is automatically "cropped" out of the picture even with a 21 mm lense. You can get some color shift from the center to the edges that can be corrected. This is a consequence of the sensor design with wide angle lenses. It is not so much a problem with film which I also shoot.

Remember when you're doing reviews that you want to review the product, not sell it. If you go over the good stuff and leave out the bad stuff, you become a salesman... & in this case it sounds like you're trying to sell the idea that you've made a good purchase to yourself more than anything else. You can't just ignore vignetting that literally takes up nearly 1/3 of the frame! @parratt-world10 жыл бұрын
Well, thanks for that. The very noticeable vignetting is enough to put me off buying those lenses for use on that camera. One argument could be that 'Voigtlander' lenses were never more than a cheap alternative for the real thing, Leica or Zeiss on film cameras. But the real issue here is that the short optical register of optically true wide-angle lenses is better handled with film capture than digital. The acute angle of light is a struggle for digital capture. The retro-focus wide angle lens design is better for this reason, simply because the exit pupil is much further away from the film/sensor plane. This is why the Zeiss lenses made for the A7 cameras are far superior than anything else. There was a time when optically true wide angle lenses on medium and small format were superior to retro-focus alternatives. But since that era, optical design has progressed enormously. Aberrations which designers struggled with in retro-focus design have largely been eliminated. Nothing can match the Zeiss optics designed for the A7, and with respect, I must say that anything less is a waste of the A7/A7R's magnificent sensors.

Superformance72 well, dont buy these lenses then if it doesnt suit your style. your original comment made it sound like you thought the vignetting from these lenses was some sort of design defect when it is clearly a style choice. lack of skill??? as much as I'm tempted to I wont even address that silly comment. if you dont like vignetting that is fine. some of us do like the mood and atmosphere it can add to our shots. it seems appropriate to me that these vintage looking lenses would have a vintage characteristic.

RedroomStudios I have nothing against vignettingat all, if you read what I wrote, "If you put a vignette on so many shots that this would be an advantage, I'd say you are trying to hide a lack of skill as a photographer". If you are using a vignette that much, there is something wrong as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't directly attacking you, more the need to use it that much that this lens would be an advantage.
@RedroomStudios10 жыл бұрын
Superformance72 dude, I read exactly what you wrote. I'm telling you that vignetting is a personal style choice, not a "bandaid" to hide poor photography. I cant even imagine how you could envision that vignetting could be used as some sort of technical crutch? let me turn your own logic around on you so you can see how ridiculous it is... "if you so rarely use vignetting and prefer the flat look of standard images then you are clearly an unsophisticated amateur photographer". see how ridiculous that sounds? it comes down to personal choice and nothing more.

It has proper polished surfaces for both mounts where the Adorama adaptor only has polishing on the lens side. The ultimate adaptor is probably the Novoflex but at $260 they don't come cheap.

great vid. Are these 2 lenses mount is Leica or M4/3?

Hi Craig, great vid. Could you post a link in reply to the Fotodiox adapter you recommed? There are couple out there and I don't want to make a mistake. Thx in advance

Sony made a mistake using those AA filters. I modded my nex-7 recently by taking it off and everything looks much better.

Nice review. Please does anybody know if the M-mount Voightlander 40 mm lens has problems at corners due to thicker low pass filter of Sony full frame e-mount cameras?
@mavfan111 жыл бұрын
thanks, I've got the Fuji XE-2 and metabones speedbooster Leica R to X adapter and I love the Leica R 90mm 2.0 and 50mm 2.0 on it as the speedbooster gives it the full-frame coverage. Oh, and because they were made for the Leica R SLRs the R lenses are much cheaper than the M's. They're bigger too but it's worth it to get Leica lenses for $300-$400.

isnt it difficult to focus? just wondering as have an x pro 1
@mavfan111 жыл бұрын
I mostly shoot models and street shots, not a lot of fast action, so I don't have any problem with manual focus. The focus peaking feature on the X-E1 and X-E2 isn't as pronounced as Sony's A7 but it's enough for me. I believe the X-Pro1 also got focus peaking in it's 3.0 firmware update. It takes a little getting used to but after a while focusing becomes pretty easy. Just look for the silver shimmer and that's what's currently in focus and then adjust from there.

Hey, I thought that 24mm is only for the nex line up as apsc only. Does it work perfectly on the A7r?
@Ces1um7 жыл бұрын
Dunno about these lenses on a Sony but on a film camera they're amazing- and you don't get vignetting or colour fringing on film bodies.

How can i deal with thise lens color corner issues
10 жыл бұрын
That's no big deal to focus it manually, are you sure? The lens might be very goood. But using focus peaking means no spontaneous shots, fondling around the buttons. Even if I have manual lenses, I would say it is a big difference in usage and purpose of a lens.

Dieter Käppel I began my photography career on manual focus, with my Hasselblads and Contax RX cameras and I never had an issue with spontaneous shots. It comes down to practice.

craig, what legacy lens would you consider for some relatively close detail work, like textures, textiles etc, not macro as such but just around the 40cm MFD range for the a7r, was thinking of going with an m mount using the voigtlander close up adapter to get that bit closer?
@atyl197210 жыл бұрын
would they get any closer than the Zeiss 50mm f2 planar T* with their respective adapters Craig?

hi again craig, do you have some shots with the a7r and the nokton classic available for me to see?

@atyl197210 жыл бұрын
***** well i'm now thinking of getting the A7 as i don't think i'll benefit from the extra pixels, my plan is to get the 24-70 FE lens along with something cheaper like the classic 40mm or alike.. i will eventually get a macro but wanted to see what the voigt would be capable of using it with the voigt close up adapter to let me get in that extra few cm

Sorry, I just don't get this weight thing - I've done photography since 1980, I still use manual lenses some of which are 60 years old on a mirrorless camera without issue. I am a land dwelling mammal that has evolved muscles to push myself off the ground, if some of you grew a backbone it might help. Sure, a bag full of Canon EF or Minolta lenses is going to want to form a black hole but the answer is simple; Take what you need - this equates to maybe four lenses, not everything you own!

What I dislike with the Sony a7 series full frame mirrorless cameras is the lack of a full frame FE pancake lens. If Sony wants a real small and light full frame mirrorless camera, it shouldn't have neglected the pretense of FE pancake lens. The Sony APS-C crop frame mirrorless cameras have two pancake lenses. The SEL16F28 and the more expensive and sharper SEL20F28. Both are compatible with Sony a7 but in crop mode which delivers 2.4 times less resolution and sharpness. Sony A7 series has 6 models and only 11 FE full frame lenses. Five of the eleven lenses are the expensive Zeiss ones, which have similar focal lengths with the native Sony ones. So the real variety is smaller. Sony has a bigger number APS-C lenses which can be used with Sony a7 series. Nevertheless the quality is by far worst.
