One of my favorite features about this camera is the manual focus system. I love how it automatically zooms in when I turn the focus ring so I can really dial it in. It makes me actually want to take more manually focused shots now.

Thanks, Dustin for your fantastically detailed reviews. This is my first upgrade from a Canon 550D, which I have been using for what seems like an eternity. I had looked at getting the A7III and a Tamron 28-75, but after your reviews, I switched to an A7RIII and both the Samyang 35mm & 85mm f/1.4 lenses. It's a little more $ but I'm super excited to have some new tools to shoot with. Again a big thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Awesome review! I’ve been waiting for someone to do a long term review on the camera, and not just an “initial thoughts”. I’ve had the A7Riii since release day, and I absolutely love it. You really nailed it though when you covered all of its strengths and weaknesses. Seriously good work, especially with staying so subjective throughout the whole review. I’m glad to see you are picking up one for your personal kit, I hope you love yours as much as I love mine.

Thank you. I too find KZbin reviews often go no deeper than either a quick trade show breakdown (just to be first) or drawing a conclusion based on a trip paid for by Sony for a day or two using the camera only in situations designed to emphasize its strengths.

Awesome review as always! I picked up a used A7R II after the III came out. Even though it doesn’t do things as fast, it’s still a remarkable camera. Most of my adapted canon lenses work well with the Metabones adapter and latest firmwares, though some of them hunt for focus in “advanced” mode. My 6D still focuses better in extreme low light, but switching over to manual focus on the Sony is easy enough. I’m in love with eye-AF and IBIS. I can get consistent pin-sharp handheld photos with the Canon 135mm f/2 EF @ 1/40 second shutter speed!

Regarding being stuck with FF stills shooting on the A7R3, I have assigned the FF/APS-C toggle to the joy stick button, allowing me to immediately toggle between them as I often do shooting birds. I love that ability.

I assigned it to a button, too, and often use the different framing - particularly when shooting events where I don't need the higher resolution.

What I wonder on both the A7 III and A7R III is the LCD and colour reproduction in general. I have come from an A7 II and I read a lot of people complaining how bad the colors were with it etc etc. Switching to the regular 7 III, the LCD on the back of the camera was horrible. The colors shown there did have nothing in common with what I would later see on my computer, everything was shifted towards red/orange on a very drastic way. I have read more complaints on this on the internet, however it didn't seem to be a problem for everybody or the majority. On the 7R III, however, that's a bit different. The LCD itself is no problem. However, as soon as you use creative mode rendering for JPGs or movies or use a picture profile based on any colour profile not being "Still", there is a noticeable reddish shift, too. I have now configured a picture profile based on "Still" colour mode, however I lose silent shooting that way on any occasion where I don't want to edit RAWs. Interestingly, turning down magenta by -5 in colour depth settings turns out to be the major factor. That's not a perfect solution, though.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 ай бұрын
I have found that colors haven't gotten a lot better after this generation of Sony cameras. I have no complaints about the a7IV, a7RV, or Alpha 1 that I or my team own.
@fotosvond_3 ай бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI After some confusion, despair and working into the colour theme, I can declare this as "solved". The problem for me are the WB presets. I don't know why, but somehow they don't work properly for me, especially yellow/red/magenta always freak out if I use these in combination with SOOC-JPGs. They are just "too warm", especially overcast and shadow. I tried to tweak the presets from yellow/red/magenta tint more towards green and blue, but I couldn't really achieve a final breakthrough there, so I decided to return to setting WB manually as Kelvin value - et voila, the problem isn't there anymore. Strange!
@highgroundproductions85906 жыл бұрын
Yes. The PDAF points on the Sony cover a large part of the frame but don't cover most of the edges. At the edges you only have contrast detect AF. The A9 has PDAF on the whole frame though.

capture one does look far better, highly recommend. Afterall they are made by pro (phrase one) so the workflow definitely makes a lot of sense. you can simply open some raws to compare. color is sort of reinterpreted by the software so what you use to open affects the images.

Thank you for being so honest. You’re the first review I’ve seen on KZbin addressing dust on the sensor. After the second time shooting on the a7rii I noticed the same thing. Returned it last night. Ordered a7riii. Doesn’t look like I’ll be getting rid of my problem. I cleaned my sensor on my 5DMarkii after 10 years. I’ve never had this issue. I looked up some forums stating cause was the IBIS. “Oil spots on sensor” You notice them f/11-22.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
It's still an issue with the a73, too, though, surprisingly, I've had little issue with the a6500. The best camera I've ever used for that is the 5D Mark IV. It's sensor almost never needs cleaning, even for a pro like me.

I had an a7r II and I hated the colors, especially the green skin. Disappointed to hear that it hasn't been fixed in the a7r III. Another concern is the depreciation. I lost a lot money when I sold my camera just 6 months after purchasing it. On forums like FredMiranda I'm already seeing A9s for $3000 and a7rIII for $2800.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I think the depreciation on Sony's is helped along by the fact that Sony tends to release new models faster than everyone else.

Another objective and thoughtful review by DA. All reviewers need to take a page from this playbook. I’ll likely never be a Sony user as the form factor and ergonomics with 400-500mm glass tracking 600mph jets at Airshows doesn’t work for ME (I’m a Canon diehard) but clearly Sony is breaking new ground and deserves its place. We all benefit from choices and options. Thanks as always (glad you’re keeping your 5DM4 🙂)

I agree, there is no option to choose the raw file size in Sony A7riii. In Canon, there is Raw, M-Raw and S-Raw. It is not every time, we need to the 42MP raw files. It is an overkill and it takes lots of time to import all the raw files into LR for editing. I wish Sony can provide the option to choose the raw file size.

Great review thanks! Hard choice whether to invest into Nikon or Sony. Certainly on the Sony side the sensor dust issues and weather sealing are concerns as I will be using the camera for hiking trips in the mountains. Is the Nikon D850 that much more rugged that it’s a better adventure camera than the A7riii?
@Vaptomwen6 жыл бұрын
John Boy There a You Tube video called Sony Mirrorless in Africa - a discussion with Matt Granger. Depending on where your going it’s well worth watching although it was made before the A7R iii came out. I’ve been & live in dustier countries than I suspect where Dustin made this & I would still trust Nikon & Canon long before Sony for all but City & indoor use. Nikon D850 which I have is excellent for outdoor use & if you want similar in mirrorless than you may want to consider m4/3 system. Also not mentioned in the long term review , the water test was a disgrace for Sony given the asking price . That also applies to Sony lenses like the 24-105 f/4 reviewed by Dustin , compact & very well balanced but it too has been reported to be a little more susceptible to dust than maybe you’d like. For me I’d wait for the Sony A7R IV model, but certainly test the 3. Ergonomics still favour the D850 for me & if you value engagement than Sony is the last brand I’d choose DSLR or mirrorless, other brands Fuji , Panasonic, Olympus are far more enjoyable in the photographic process, that’s me try it for yourself if you haven’t already?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
If you're in a dusty environment, I do think that the D850 is the better choice.

Great detailed review Dustin! , I agree with your observations for the most part. I have made the switch from Canon to Sony and now own the a9 and the a7R3. For my needs they are a great combination of camera bodies. I am mostly a Performing Arts and Landscape photographer but also do Architecture, some Environmental Portraits and events. The three things that I find most useful in the Sony system and for which I made the switch are 100% silent shooting mode, EVF and the AF system. There are other things that I really like and like any camera system there are things I don't like so much.

Hi Dustin. Great review. In 2020, would you still recommend purchasing one? I have an A7R2 and a bunch of FE glass. A 16-35 F4 Zeiss, 24-105 F4, 70-200 F4, 50 1.8 and most recently the 100-400 GM with a 1.4 TC. I shoot mainly landscapes but have started doing some wildlife and birding. Trying to convince myself to get an A9 and keep the A7R2 but that might not be the most economical route. Awesome as usual. I love your reviews! I also notice that the unprotected sensor gets dusty fast! Did you wet clean it? The air blower doesn’t seem to get the sensor clean. I also noticed that the camera freezes randomly when clicking the shutter button while back-focusing or clicking the eye focus button (when using a sigma adapter with EF lenses). I had to turn the camera off and on again to get it to work! Have you encountered that problem since you are using the same combo of adapter and EF lenses?

Hi Dustin, I understand that the EVF of the Sony a7RIII is really relevant when you use manual lenses. But is it still the case when you do low light photography? Indeed, I imagine that in this situation the EVF must have a lot of noise and in this respect should not be as efficient as an optical viewfinder. What do you think about it? Really nice review, this could be my next camera, unfortunately I live in Faroe Islands where the weather can be challenging, lot of rain and windy conditions, and the weather sealing is said not to be very impressive! Also problem with easily getting stain on the sensor is something that I don’t have with my Pentax K3, hopefully the next version will be better weather sealed. One nice thing with the Pentax K series is that the weather sealing is probably the best out there, which makes it perfect for my environment. Just wish Pentax would be faster updating there cameras, they are not very fast to adept new technologies, so my K3 feels very old now and it’s slow focusing system that is Pentax biggest problem has not gotten much better with the newer cameras!. I've got a kit of lenses that mostly translates well via adapter to Sony. I think recent announcements by Tamron and Sigma for native FE lenses is huge. It will give a wider lens selection at better prices and will also put some pressure on Sony to come in at more reasonable price points on new lenses.

Hi Dustin! I'm considering buying this camera plus an adapter to use as a second camera. I'm a Canon user with Canon, Tamron and Sigma lenses and I'm curious to hear from you if it's a viable option to actually use it in real life with an adapter? I currently shoot with a 6D Mk2 and an 80D for sports and extra reach. The Sony would be awesome for still portraits, landscapes and such from what I read about it. Would love the extra resolution and to try out mirrorless. What adapter would you recommend and like I said, is it even an option without going for native lenses? Thanks in advance!
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Michael, the Sigma MC-11 is the best all-round adapter. It works pretty well for a lot of lenses, but it does take learning the focus system to get the best out of adapted glass. It's generally great for slow moving subjects, but fast moving subjects will be lens-specific.
@MichaelClaesson6 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott Ok! I'll try it out. Thanks!
@ThePhotofit6 жыл бұрын
I have owned the a7r2 and now have the a7r3. I also still have and use the Canon 5D3. The biggest negative of mirror less systems as I see it is their susceptibility to attract dust on the sensor. This is a seriously weak Achilles heel especially if you shoot primarily with primes and need to switch lenses regularly.

Was thinking of buying an A7III Or A7RIII for travel and use my L Glass but it's really not that much of a weight saving, so may take the 5DSR on more travels, what would you do if you were in my position wanting to save weight for my travels ?

If you really want to travel light, the a73 or a7r3 are solid choices. Pair them with some of the smaller, lighter lenses (Zeiss Batis or Loxia lenses are good choices if you want amazing image quality). The Tamron 28-75mm RXD F2.8 is a great choice, too. Hi Mr Abott. Great review ! If you had your choice between this camera and an a9 which would it be?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
That really depends on your needs. I personally have no interest in the A9 because the burst rate and buffer of the a7R3 is plenty for me, so I prize the higher resolution (and lower price). The opposite may be true for you. I shoot very little sports or action.

I'm actually surprised how much better it is. I own the a6500, too, and the focus system (which I thought was really good) seems almost primitive by comparison.

That will take more time, as I become more familiar with the system. I'm starting with 3 of the primary 50mm options for my next project.

Thank you for a great video. just a beginner hobbyist. i wanted to know really just how big of a difference the 42mp vs 24mp resolution has when viewing it on phones or ipads after post production. Considering the photos will be heavily cropped and downsized, (comparing both 42mp & 24 mp photos) will I still be able to notice a difference in sharpness or would that be a hard-to-tell result due to the quality of display screen - which is the likely answer I’ve been reading online. And for such heavily cropped image, will I be seeing a noticeable difference when printing at a size around 20*24 ? I’ve tried to read every reviews out there. It still is hard to grasp with my lack of experience just by reading texts :( Thank you!
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Short answer is that you won't see much of a difference on a small screen (though that will depend on how deeply you crop an image). You will likely see a difference in a large print.

wonderful review as always. you are becoming one of the best reviewers in my opinion. most of those guys these days just focus on video. like its only a video camera. so thank you so very much. i also have the a7r3 and i absolutely love it. but i am in the same boat as you ive seen dust or even maybe an oil spot. i did compare it to my previews d850 and i found that the d850 has much much better colors. they seem more natural. sony to me are very oversaturated maybe youve noticed that as well?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I elected to go with the "Light" profile in camera and it produces less oversaturated results.

After viewing images from the A7r3 I am almost convinced they got the color science right. What would you say Dustin? I am almost questioning my self if I should have got the A7r3 instead of the 5D4. I like my 5D4 but for the same money the Sony A7r3 is very appealing.

Hii Dustin! Beautifully narrated details. I would like to know, how much slower with shutter speed you can go with a7riii while using anything 85 mm or longer focal length during portrait photography, before the camera shake starts to blur the image? I highly appreciate & regard your reply! Thanks!
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Your problem for shooting portraits is not camera shake with IBIS; it is tiny movements of your subject. You should keep your shutter speed up at least 1/100th second to avoid subject movement.

Thanks for the review Dustin! I think I'll probably upgrade from my A7R II, there seems to be enough reasons for me to do so. The one thing that keeps making me hesitate is the disappearance of the apps. They were slow and cumbersome, but they were there if I needed them. Plus, it was nice to be able to record videos for longer than the limit with the hack. But damn, all the rest really makes me want to upgrade. It makes me want to have two bodies, actually, but I can't justify the expense.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Sony's handling of the app store is puzzling. They deleted it without any replacement, leaving some holes in the feature list (like time lapses, for example).

@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
The stabilization seems to work very well (if you put in the right setting for the focal length), but I'm not familiar enough with how the IBIS works to give you a definitive answer to that scenario. I don't think the system works differently than the a7RII - it just works better.
@Clouder776 жыл бұрын
regarding your buffer test what type of memory cards did you use and did you shoot in jpeg or raw uncompressed and did you test just slot one which is UHS-II? slot two is UHS-I, so pointless to test it for speed, since we all know it would be slower. Unless you are shooting sports for fast moving subjects the buffer is fast enough for most use cases that doesn't require continuous shooting and most would be shooting in jpeg for sports photos at the pro level. I use a UHS -II 300mb/s write speed memory card and notice no buffer issues. The video side of things it's what set this camera apart from Canon and Nikon right now as a true hybrid beast.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I used Lexar Pro 150 MBs UHS-II card in the first slot for writing RAWs in the text. For regular use I also used a Sandisk Extreme 90 MBs UHS-1 card, but just for writing JPEGs
@Clouder776 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. However this should be mentioned in the video, so people don't get confused about buffering issues. I know some people can't afford 300mb/s cards, but if you have the money to afford this camera you should be able to get a card fast enough to do the job. I use a 90mb/s card in slot II for when my slot I card runs out of memory, but some might use it as backup if you shoot for weddings etc..
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Theoretically the camera isn’t writing even 150 MBs, actually, so it shouldn’t be an issue. My results are consistent with other reviewers who have tested buffer, actually.
@Clouder776 жыл бұрын
It would be more clear to me if you showed the actual buffer times between both Sony and Nikon using the same speed cards shooting at 8fps in the UHS-II slots only in uncompressed raw.

Very well done! I’ve got mine for a month and been using it nearly exclusively since. It’s quite amazing that the camera works pretty well with my Commlite adaptor that most of my Nikkor or Nikon mount Sigma Art lenses autofocus quickly and accurately (with eye AF in both AFS and AFC). However, I’ve experienced one quirk that when I’m using m mode and auto ISO at the same time the camera would not let the user know whether the current setting is over exposed or not. Did you experience the same?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I don't remember seeing that issue. It could be adapter specific.
@stevenlui81056 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott No this issue is not adapted lens-specific. The same has been experienced when I use my other Sony GM lenses. That said the camera would only inform you of under exposed settings but not otherwise.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, maybe I just missed it then.
@stevenlui81056 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott This issue only shows up when you use both m mode and auto ISO at the same time. No problem whatsoever when you use other modes or dial in ISO manually. Maybe it’s just me being a long time Nikon user which doesn’t have the same quirk. Anyway thanks for your prompt replies!

Steven Lui lens rental took apart an a7riii and extensively examined the weather sealing. The weather sealing is much improved throughout the camera, except one place, the bottom plate. Which confirms that video. For me, I shoot in rain sometimes, which I'm confident the camera will be fine in. I will be very weary of where I set it down, however I always use a strap and when I set it down I put in my bag.

Hello Dustin, I've been tied up for a couple of weeks and just got to watch your last two Sony videos for autofocus and for your long term conclusions. Great videos as always!! I'm hoping to rent one of these and test it out with my Sigma 150-600 C one day. Your videos have me so excited about the camera and it finally seems like there is a FF camera that would make me leave my 7Dmkii for wildlife shooting. The focusing prowess of that camera coupled with the 10fps just hasn't been equaled except for the mighty Canon 1D series. I'm hesitant to just pull the trigger as I want to know more from a wildlife perspective first and especially with my sigma lens attached. I've found one video that covered it a little but it didn't help me much. Do you have any plans on showing this bad boy in wildlife /bird photography situations? There is really nothing out there right now on it.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I will shoot in that situation, but it has to be with the right lens (probably the Sony 100-400). I wouldn't trust an adapted long lens for critical situations right now. It seems the best performance with adapted lenses is wide aperture primes.
@DennisMoncla6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dustin and that is good news you plan on doing something like that. If when doing it you can get your hands on a 150-600 to test it, even anecdotal, it would go a long way. I've been scouring forums with a lot of people asking about it in my situation but no real responses yet. Also, you might be able to clear something up that would be a game changer for BIF as well. I heard that an adapted lens would only shoot at 3 fps. Is this true? I'm not saying you can't take BIF at 3fps but it sure doesn't promote getting the wing and head position just how you'd like it. As always, thanks again for your great video reviews. I still find no one who puts as much thought and care into their reviews nor do I find anyone else who takes more time to respond and help their followers!!
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is true. I've not seen a slowdown with adapted lenses.

Hey Dustin, I just want to add that the Canon iTR is eye af. It works perfectly with auto select af at 1.2 at basically any useful distance.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
That's true to an extent, though they are not identical technologies.
@thisis51236 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott I haven’t owned or used the Sony cameras so you would know better than I in terms of comparing the two. For me though with my 85L and 50L I ( and all other lenses ) I use AI Servo with Auto Select AF as my primary focus mode assigned to the shutter half press. For me, with iTR on, this always focuses on the eye even at 1.2. Of course I have had the occasional imperfect shot like one would expect with any tech. This is with my 5DIV and 1DXII
@thisis51236 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott Dustin. Just reporting back to say that I was mistaken with my earlier statement. When I first started utilizing this iTR feature more, it’s been with the 1DXII much more so than with the 5DIV. The 1DXII both in practice and in theory seems to have the advantage here due to iTR with face detect as it uses the 360,000 pixel metering sensor to detect the scene vs the 5DIV’s 150,000 pixel sensor. I have done detailed testing comparing these two cameras regarding af previous to this that excluded the iTR / auto select af ability.
