Shooting relatively static shots with simple tones and little visual complexity would reveal a marginal difference. You'll see little or no difference in DR or color. Movement with complex patterns or backgrounds will test the parameters of a codec. A moving subject against foliage. Someone wearing patterns, moving around by a river. Etc. Compressed and interpolated codecs really begin to fall apart under those conditions.

Having the a7S III record proxies alongside the footage is butter. Really small video files. DaVinci Resolve FLIES using in-camera proxies. All you have to is link 'em, which takes just a couple clicks.
@preformingmonkey2 жыл бұрын
Davinci (free version) has a cap on 8bit colour (for Sony A7siii at least) - do you know if the proxy files are a good workaround to this problem? Or do I need to bite the bullet and get the stuido version?
@eyeintheskystudios2 жыл бұрын
@@preformingmonkey So you're saying you'd use proxy files as your source footage? If so, I wouldn't recommend it. You can definitely see a quality difference. Proxies are just best used to reduce the processing on your PC/Mac to allow the timeline to play without dropping frames (If I'm understanding what you're saying). But yes, I'd bite the bullet (it's worth the $300 with lifetime upgrades)
@preformingmonkey2 жыл бұрын
@@eyeintheskystudios appreciate the reply! I was always under the impression proxies were essentially smaller files to work with on your timeline, but when it comes to rendering the footage, you can use the mirrored commands but on the main video files (if you get me). For example, each original clip is 100mb, but you make your timeline using the proxies for each file which are 1mb each. When you render the final timeline it uses the 100mb files?
@eyeintheskystudios2 жыл бұрын
@@preformingmonkey Yes, exactly! Proxies just make it easier for you not to have a stuttering timeline (smooth playback). Resolve also automatically turns these off during rendering to use the full quality files, so you don't have to worry about turning off. However, make sure you turn OFF Proxies when color grading so you're using the full quality files (and turn on/off again where needed).

@@martinwoodfilms not sure either if there would be a straight example to this. but years ago, mainly this was the scientific difference between an FS5 and an FS7, by the time only the FS7 could do Intraframe, and the FS5 only Long gop, you could see that the image wasn't quite responsive with the FS5 when you had to do some heavy color correction in post, both were in HD 10 bit, so 8bit/10 bit is a factor also but it wasn't in that case.

I already filmed 3 weddings in this format and it has been a nightmare to transcode so that I can edit smoothly. It appears that XAVC HS 10bit 4:2:0 wplaybacks and edits much smoother even on my Dell xps 15 laptop which is lower specs (i7, 1050ti). I was thinking that XAVC HS was going to be a pain, but it appears that 4:2:0 is much lighter to playback and the difference won't be noticeable for weddings. What do you think? I could not see any difference on my 4k monitor at 4k. Even punched in. All of this looks the same. I have a Canon R5, and I have tried telling the difference between the IPB vs ALL-I, and I simply cant tell in 1080p, 4k, or 8k. If there is a use case to justify modern ALL-I vs modern IPB and Long Gop codecs, I have not found it yet. The IPB on the Canon looks just the same as All-I, with movement, low light, or color pushes, or anything I can throw at it. They edit the same on my machine frankly, and the extra file size of the All-I doesn't make much sense for anything I would ever use it for.

Yea, I think im gonna def find a balance between file size and editability. as long as it is 10bit 4:2:2 im sure it will be solid AF

Hello.. I've noticed something that has been driving me crazy and made me think converting to Canon.. I can see in this video there's some sort of flickering or dropped frames.. it's like the screen suddenly gets darker for one frame and then goes back to normal.. did you find a solution for this problem?
@nVuFilms4 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you are talking about. Maybe in h265 premiere pro
@idahofallsmagazine36913 жыл бұрын
I don't see any problems with flickering, but it might be a result of a couple other things, like the high shutter speed he's using for some reason, and/or the pervasive use of jump cuts.

I'm still waiting for mine to be shipped. For the XAVC S-I @ 600mbps were you able to use UHSII v60 or did you have to use v90? I think you can get away with v90 but then again the only v90 cards I can find max out at like 256GB and are expensive AF LOLLLLL

@@t6909 That is strange. Manual says SI at 23.976p is 240 Mbps which is 30 MB/s so a V30 card or V60 card should be fine. You're at the max of a V30 card though.

Note a lot of users think XAVC S-I is the 'best' mode because it has the highest bit rates. That's a huge mistake. As you know XAVC HS and XAVC S are highly compressed. So despite their lower bit rates, they can capture significantly more data than S-I mode. S-I mode is best for users whose editing rigs are not powerful, because it is not a resource-intensive codec for editing systems.

Honestly, for client work I’d be shooting the highest data rate 100% of the time. If you aren’t going beyond 60fps, it’s my understanding that V90 SD cards will handle that, and we live in the day where 10 terabyte backup drives can be had for 100 bucks. The high data rate with minimal compression should edit just fine in the h.264 codec, and your work WILL look better than using the lesser options. You just spent 4 grand on that monster...flex dat thang!

If it's wedding videos, that's fine but remember that S-I mode is not the highest quality. A lot of users think the highest bitrate mode is the highest quality but that's not the case. XAVC HS 4:2:2 10-Bit is the highest quality mode despite being a lower bitrate. Its complex compression enables it to pack more data than S-I. But it will hammer your editing system. If you record in XAVC HS 4:2:2 10-Bit, you'll probably need to transcode to prores (or proxy edit) unless you have a power editing systems. S-I mode is still very good, but it's not the best mode the A7S III offers.

10TB SSD will cost you more than $1,000 so you're not entirely correct. You just don't edit high bitrate 4K or 8K footage with sucky sucky slow ass HDDs

Thanks for your quality test. I searched for a video which explained the difference between this krypton xavc codes. I could not see a difference between s hs and I. So I will use s in my a7iv, hopefully coming in Dezember. LG Bernd
