You really need to be using Resolve to properly process raw video. You can convert ProRes raw to CinemaDNG raw and get all of the advanced highlight recovery and colorspace conversions and color management that Resolve offers

Hey I have a7siii but I have a big issue when I export footage from atomos ninja v. My premiere pro just crashes Adobe encodes crashes too. Are old mac computer limited to use prores raw? I am using MacOS Catalina retina 2012 version 10.15.7

Premiere will deal with Prores Raw properly in an update apparently. You can make it work correctly now with the right LUT and bringing down the raw exposure control.

Premiere adds some sort of REC 709 LUT that you cannot adjust. You really need to use FCPX until adobe figures out how to process the gamma curve.

Do you have any idea if there's going to be a firmware update to allow for post-stabilization with Catalyst Browse using the other shooting modes? Also, have you tried FHD240 yet? I have been loving my A7SIII even for photos. I HATE how slow editing my A7RIII photos is, so it's really nice for that, and if I know I need the resolution, I bust out the R.

5:59 Looking at the SLog3 footage it looks flat as a pancake and looking at the highlights also shows me they're actually blown out but compressed. The RAW file actually isn't. DaVinci Resolve has a good highlight recovery algorithm and tone mapping that can help with clipping. Premiere comes nowhere near it

There are some extra steps you have to take with the ProRes RAW to tell Premiere to treat it as Slog3, that's why it looked the way it did.

Perhaps you wanted a tighter shot and you didn't have a longer lens with you at the time or something. if the case were that the r5 with 45 megapixels had images that look less nice with skin tones and vibe somehow to the 12mp a7siii, i wouldn't care that it has more resolution.

I have my a7siii already, but I know full well I’m going to be using my A7III more for photos. And no it’s not just about cropping, blowing up images are easier without getting pixelation. Some people still print, also, 12mp is not enough for wildlife shots, especially macro and landscapes. But sure, feel free to use 12mp on your work, I sure won’t be.

I drew out the max print sizes infront of me on paper... None of them produce giant prints at 300 ppi, not that you need to have them at 300 ppi. I wonder too, I read a lot and most people seem to think that 12mp is a bit too low for stills because you basically lose the ability to crop unless the photos are for instagram. Aside from resolution, R5 has apparently better IBIS, ergonomics and menus. But otherwise, A7S3 is a bit cheaper, does not overheat, better low light, better dynamic range, has gyro stabilization, better mic integration (and compared to previous A7, the menus are better, you have the flip screen, it's touch screen and you can shoot 10bits 120fps). Because of the R5 resolution, most people say it's better than SonyA7S3 for stills but when I look at it, if you want to use the A7S3 mostly for stills 90% but also for videos 10%, I think the Sony can potentially be a better option. I wish the A7 IV would already be released ...

Hey Man I dont know your workflow but for prores raw finalcut pro was 2x applying the slog3 cine profile. It would do the raw conversion and also the lut.. in final cut you need to go in and make sure its disabled. Or else you will get it 2x processed which makes it look HLG. The raw profile needs just 1x slog3 cine applied.. disable the other one. My guess is premiere pro doing same thing. Prob needs firmware fix in meta coming out. But its doing 2x application on final cut pro. Easy to fix in info panel. Hope that helps.

@@LeeZavitz yea same thing in final cut pro x.. you go into info. In final cut pro x. I. U use raw to compression.. set to slog3 cine. And then lut change to none. It will be a flat profile. When its 2x baked in makes it look like your video on youtube. When I seen it I knew instantly the issue. Resolve meta data is 2x baking the slog3 cine.. times 2. Go into any slog3 and apply lut again. Your see 2x baked. Also you can edit it in compressor... go to settings on right under video tab.. on another note I was told premiere pro and final cut added raw controls for some cameras but A7siii isn't working yet. But go into premiere info tab. Or use compressor or final cut. I transcode to prores4444 xq and crop to 4096x2160. 4kdci... u can also do 4096x1776 for 2 35 to 1. I think sony needs to update firmware so it dont 2x process or prores ninja needs another update. Lmk how u make out. I can tell you pulling keys on 12bit raw is like butter.

My favourite stills camera ever was only 12MP. The Nikon D700, I shot some beautiful weddings on that and the pictures held up amazing in 12inch prints. That being said I'd hate to have to use 12MP for products and food photography. Also I think the things with raw is that 16bit linear and 12 bit log are basically the same things. Sony just wants to say the bigger number in their marketing. But don't quote me on that.

It’s designed for anyone that can afford it. Typically I would recommend something cheaper if you are just learning. Amazing gear in the hands of a beginner will still look like beginner footage. You need to master the art of movement and light first. You should try out a Sony a6400 before jumping into the a7siii.

Yeah. They are in kind of in different worlds though. One is a cinema camera and the other is a fullframe hybrid mirrorless camera. The c70 has a different use case IMO. built in ND filters is the most attractive thing on the c70

It's hard to believe that the 10-bit file looks better than the 12-bit Prores raw file, there is something wrong there in the process. I own a Nikon Z6 and the Prores raw files have much more information and color depth than with the internal 10 bits in Prores. Or maybe you changed the clips, but 10 bit can't look better than 12 bit, just an observation, keep going!

Yeah it’s better because now you can atleast bring it in and select slog3. But prores raw on a7siii still lacks a lot of raw features you get with other cameras. Cant change white ballance or iso yet. The files are massive and don’t really give you that much more flexibility in post over xavcs I. I don’t know what I was expecting but I guess I assumed it would be like other raw workflows I’ve used from canon and Red

According to the release notes for the latest Ninja V firmware, ISO and white balance adjustment functionality is on the way for the A7S III (although it only mentions FCP; maybe from that point it'll just be up to Adobe to get it working?). It was an issue of premiere not handling it correctly. There has since been an update which puts it in the correct colour space

You need to make sure you have the ninjaV firmware updated and the prores raw license entered. And on the camera side need to make sure in HDMI output settings that raw is turned on.

And your talking head also looks fabulous (oh I so hate sounding like Trump) - he always says fabulous. Seriously you rock dude. And obviously take real pains with your video quality. If I could shoot video and pictures as good as you, I'd be very very happy indeed. As much as I would want to get a Canon, I am tempted by the Sony mirrorless. Sony took a bet on mirrorless a gig gamble and when I think of it the only digital cameras I have ever owned have been mirrorless. With Sony everything is mirrorless - no confusion. With Canon you have to choose...more confusion, and they cripple each camera in stupid ways,. forcing you to spend more if you want all the functionality. Seriously you are the 2nd person that's making me take a serios look at Sony cameras. Good job. And this impression was based on the quality of yoru footage, not hype or camera features - just the quality of your results.

Hey man. Thx for your opinion on this. Quick question for the catalyst stabilization: what shutterspeed did you use for it? Some people mention you have to bump up the shutterspeed to avoid getting weird motion blur in some parts of the image? Did you do that as well or just left it at 180° rule?

I think I was at 1/240 cuz I just left it there since I was toggling between shooting 120fps and 24fps.
