At 12:10 i think you misunderstood 16bit with 16 stops of dynamic range. We can definitely see the difference between a 12 bit and a 16 bit image. 16 bit means more color over the whole image, not only in the highlights, and it gives you richer deeper colors and more flexibility in color grading. This will help you with better gradation in shadows, midtones and in highlights, and offers smooth transitions.
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
I never meant or said that 16 bits is 16 stops. Bit depth is not about adding more colors that didn’t exist, it’s about adding more steps of gradation between the existing colors. 12 bit is already too much for anyone’s needs, even for Hollywood
@veresdenialex3 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY by adding more steps of gradation it increases the number of shades of each color = more color. Not more color than already exist, just more color than 12 bit. Also 10 bit is enough for cinema, but i also enjoy grading 16 bit footage from RED for example.
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Red will not offer you 16 but by the way. All cinema cameras can capture 16bit, but they never do. And yes gradations between 2 colors will give you colors that don’t exist. But I assumed you know what I meant.
@veresdenialex3 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY so you say that no camera will output more than 12 bit color. That s interesting. So is it just a 'marketing tool'?
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Yup. RED and Sony are probably the only cameras that says it out loud they can record 16, but nowhere you can find a 16bit file. There’s a huge debate since the inception of RED about that… nowhere they officially say their files are 16bit

Your videos is a light in a dark tunnel of this topic’s complexity🙏 Personally, I hate that Apple’s software monopoly is affecting us, filmmakers, who just bought a camera and want to use it’s raw abilities. In one of your videos, you told that there is a way to transcode propres raw to 4444 via final cut for further usage in Resolve. Now I’m trying to figure how exactly to do that. I found this method: choose clips in media pool and then click “file>share ‘x’ clips”. I’m not sure is this correct way, but files were rendered. After that I opened this clips in resolve and they looked much more underexposed (that’s what I immediately saw, maybe there are more mismatches with the original footage). In FCPX both RAW and 4444 looks pretty identical. Now I’m trying to understand, what did I do wrong. Camera Sony A7S III with the latest firmware, from adjustments I set s-log3 cine, wb&iso correction, no lut or color space override. I know, it could be time consuming for you to answer me, but I’m in desperate, because couldn’t find information about proper transcoding ProRes RAW to 4444 anywhere else)

What are your thoughts on why the S-III and FX6 have their dual gain circuits spread soooo far apart? (the original S-III firmware had 640/16,000…thankfully somebody at Sony changed the final release firmware to 640/12800) On the Sony FX6, the “low” 0d is pre amped to equal 800 ISO. The “high” 0db is pre amped to equal 12800 ISO. To me, this seems to be somewhat crazy. This causes the middle and upper end of the first stage circuit to have way more noise then it needs. 4,000 - 10,000 are pretty bad. Shouldn’t Sony lower the second stage preamp gain to equal 4,000-6,000 ISO instead? I think the FX9 and Lumix S1H have more reasonable dual gain preamp values. 4,000 ISO fills the image quality “gap” that exists on the top end of the first stage. Yes, that would sacrifice all the crazy “25,000 ISO” values, true….but who uses those anyway? I’d MUCH prefer to have 800-6,000 range that has no severe gaps in noise performance.

I edited in all those formats... I still think Vegas Pro editing on a Mac is the fastest and best software to handle this. Using Mac bootcamp Vegas Pro 18 is a beast. Especially, with all the new features it added.

This was awesome and informative. Between my blackmagic pocket 4K and my Sony A7 S III + Ninja V, I feel I am stuck between worlds. Here’s to hoping there’s a better middle ground for codecs in the future. Great vid nonetheless!

but understating that davinci is today the most common for prosessional color grading , whats the deal with proress raw thougt? my early conclussion, save the money get a lens instead, and use XAVC
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Part 2 of this topic will address some of those points to why RAW might be better in some situation and why XAVC would be good in others. Stay tuned

I love your video. Thank you :)). I thought that the active stabilization is not made with gyro data. As far as i know It is giving the sensor more freedom to move. Thats why a crop is needed.

Outstanding video. A quick clarification. H.265 is typically only sluggish if you are not using nvidia nvenc hardware decode. I use it in davinci resolve, and it’s extremely fast. Premiere pro has recently enabled nvenc for encode, though I’m not sure if they have it enabled for decode yet.

I believe that actually came out after I published this episode, but in all cases not everyone has a PC they can upgrade you know

Thank you for sharing this information. I am a camera nerd myself and I appreciate it. I don't have the Sony A7SIII but I am very interested in what one can do and cannot do with this camera.

6:11 I thought that the Active Stabilization mode was just 1.1x crop on the sensor so it has physically more space to move around and stabilize. First time I'm hearing it's digital... can you show this?
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
not sure if I understood what you're saying, as it sounds like what i said. A "Crop on the Sensor" is a digital stabilization. Whether is records the clip then stabilizes it which would crop it, or just records a cropped portion, both are digital stabilizations
@Linkesch4 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY you made it sound like it's similar to warp stabilizer NLE would use in post or a phone that has digital IS.

Awesome video! Though, 16bit linear to 12bit log explanation seems not ultimately correct for me. I think, they squeeze all of the 16 bit linear data to log, not just first 12 stops. It is done by applying a log curve, or speaking mathematically, calculating a logarithm of the 16 bit values, so that 1-2-4-8-16 etc become 1-2-3-4-5 (actual values will be higher, depends on log base). And those much smaller values now can fit into 12-bits.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
That graph is showing stops not bits. I guess that what confused you

@@THEDPJOURNEY Thanks for response, I will watch it once again!

I agree with you! I don't think the 16 bit from SONY is purely a marketing jargon for the reason you mentioned here. Most camera sensors only output 12 bit data, which is then compressed into 12 bit linear raw. The prores raw from sony does have advantages here.
