Jason, how about inserting a second card in the camera and not just a single card? The issue that was reported involves using two cards (redundancy) not a single card in the UHS II slot and the fact that Sony chose not to support UHS II for both card slots.

To really put it to bed i'd love to see the results with 2 cards (yes some sports shooters shoot Raw+Raw), how quick it is to review images whilst writing to the buffer and exactly what you can and cant access in the Fn and menu's The buffer size is awesome (and needed at the astonishing 20fps)

Whilst I agree this 'buffer issue' is simply a non-issue, Jason, your way of answering it is surely the best case scenario; single uhs-ii card. People have been clamouring for sony to give them 2 card slots, and buyers of this camera are surely going to be going the redundancy route with the second slot. So why haven't you done this test with a second sd card in the camera? Is it simply because it's uhs-i and you didn't want to show the (painfully?) slow time that would have created?
@alexalexander1
@alexalexander1 7 жыл бұрын
Ok, left it a few days to see if you responded (of course you haven't). So let me tell you why I think you didn't add a second card; BECAUSE IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER! If this had been a Canon or Nikon body (at the pricepoint) nobody would be complaining about the buffer time. For some reason some idiots feel threatened by Sony. Right, let's get 'em on the card slots. Wait, can't do that now. Ok, let's complain about battery life. Wait, can't do that now. Err....lenses? Nope. I know! The buffer. Really? If you need to fill that buffer to get a good shot, I suggest you take up a new career or hobby. This fascination with feeling the need to justify to complete strangers on a website what gear you shoot with is ludicrous. Competition is good for us, the consumer. If not in price, then in pushing technology. This 'war' over photography gear is infantile. It's the same as pc vs console, and that crowd is (generally) much younger than this one. So they almost have an excuse. I ride Cannondale bikes, my friends all ride Santa Cruz. Not one of us gives a shit. I drive a Range Rover, my friends drive Audi, BMW and a Peugeot. Not one of us gives a shit. If the only thing you have to complain about on this camera is the buffer, then you're grasping. Shut the hell up and go out and shoot. The outdoors is a really a nice place, try it sometime.

Great test/demo Jason... my only concern with that large of a buffer is what happens when the battery life is low and your buffer is full? Is the in-camera software smart enough to know to 'shut down' functionality at the end to ensure proper writes or are you potentially going to lose the buffer while changing batteries?

Sir Jason, regarding your buffer test…quite a few folks questioned why you only used one high speed memory card to conduct the test when the problem/issue, involved both cards. Could it be the low speed card is the culprit or was it just a bug or an anomaly? I didn’t notice any replies to these questions and that’s your prerogative. However, you are a Sony Champion and therefore should be willing to reexamine the A9 buffer issue by using both cards to conduct your evaluation. Or if your schedule won’t permit a new test, pass this task to another Sony Champion such as Max. By the way, according to Max, the buffer clears in 30+ seconds (high speed card). That is fast, however, the D500/D5/1DX clear in less than 10 seconds and that’s with 2 cards. Had Sony installed dual XQDs, the A9 would truly be a “DSLR/Micro 4/3 Killer.” Had to include the Micro 4/3 systems...the OMD M1 Mk2 shoots about 17FPS, over 60FPS burst and 15FPS mechanical shutter. The GH5 is similar! Thank you for allowing me to post my humble opinion.

Love your work but seriously were you doing coke last night's live stream trying to cover up the 5fps mechanical flash rate on the a9 stating nothing can exceed that besides the few you mentioned. Meanwhile d500 and fuji can pull 2wice this rate. Did notice the link has now been removed. love your work but maybe a bit of thinking before ranting on untrue facts and all 1 sided paid sony advertising. People look up to you and your talented work but we all deserve the 100% goods and bads and not all 1 sided misleading info.

I can think of a couple of sports related scenarios where I'd use the camera for 10-15 seconds straight, even at 20 fps. Ever shot NASCAR? Both the start and the finish where all the wrecks happen, you don't let off the shutter button. When cars come out of turn 4 for race start, it takes close to 20 seconds for the entire field to cross the start/finish line. Second scenario is a run down in baseball. Frequently, a runner will get run back and forth between bases, attempting to stall for time so that another runner can advance a base.. The last scenario would be a horse race coming down to the finish line. Again, you lean on the button and don't stop until the final horse finishes of goes down on the track. I'd be interested in knowing at what shutter speed the a9 requires to achieve the 20 fps rate? If the camera can achieve the 20 fps rate at 1/250-1/500th of a second, it might have a place for me. I don't shoot high ISO, so anything over ISO 400, is a deal breaker for me.

That is still an issue. The "old" 1Dx II almost never buffers with a CFast card. It's not about the amount of photos and duration of bursts, but about the freeze moments. Think about tennis or other repeating actions, like a model on a swing. Events can make your life hard as well. The greatest pass or goal photo doesn't help much if you couldn't get the cheer afterwards, because your screen was frozen. Those cameras are for perfectionist, so they have to be able to capture both. Dual CF express does the trick.

Let's suppose someone uses the camera to photograph a typical NFL play (which lasts about 4 seconds) but pads it by shooting for an additional 2 seconds after the play...so shooting at 20 FPS, they'll have 120 JPG images in the buffer. According to what I read, the buffer will become full at about 364 frames and it takes about 236 seconds to clear. So does this mean that after shooting that 6 second burst, it will take about eighty seconds for those images to clear the buffer and get on the card? I would think that this would be rather problematic if let's say there were several plays in quick succession. And it would be even more problematic shooting more continuous sports like hockey, basketball, and soccer.

I've been a photographer for over 20 years and I've never shot more than 10 frames in succession in my life. I simply cannot understand the need for this nonsense. If you can't get the shot in 10 successive frames you should give up photography.

I would really would like to see tests with a fast Canon 400mm, 500mm, and 600mm what the Pros use as primary lenses for a camera that is being advertised for Pro Sports and Wildlife photographers. Would be interesting to see if the camera focusing system can keep up, still get the 20fps, and so on. If someone was going to make the switch, they would need to make sure that these lenses work as well and still get the same performance. It may be a great wedding camera, (In Jason's opinion), but would like to see how it performs towards what Sony geared this camera towards.

The two minute to clear buffer issue was originated by Tony Northrup, who later retracted it. He didn't know what he was doing before he erred on such an important spec. Probably why he is not here among the world's top journalists and photographers at the Sony Kando event. Everybody I've talked to here about the ridiculous buffer rumour has been slamming Tony's misinformation. He had the camera in NY with the rest of us, nobody else had the problem, and he made it public. No wonder he's not among the rest of us.

sorry but i'm not convinced. If you want to make a real test, put a second SD card inside, set the camera to write on both and then show us the results. You will shoot your first 200 RAWs to fill the buffer and then you can go to drink a cafe before you can shoot again LOL

Just redo the test using both card slots and time it again. To make things clear, also specify type of raw file you are recording. Cheers!

In fairness the D5 or 1DXmII obviously have faster buffering. Can't call something a D5 killer or 1DX killer when it's buffer can't even keep up with. It's awesome, and the tech is fantastic but it's being marketed as a sports camera and it's obviously not. Awesome wedding and event camera though (providing it has good image quality at higher ISOs). It's obviously not going to be perfect, nothing is.

Sony a9 shoots at 20 fps with continuous autofocus 12bit raw files with lossy compression which have lower quality and lower dynamic range than the common 14bit uncompressed raw files. The Sony a9 can shoot uncompressed raw files. Sony a9 shoots maximum 12 fps with continuous autofocus 12bit uncompressed raw files. Finally Sony can shoot 14bit uncompressed raw files only in single shooting mode or with bracketing. During continuous shooting Sony a9 shoots only 12bit raw files like all the Sony a7 series cameras. For the record the Canon 1DX mark II 6,000$ shoots 14 fps with continuous autofocus uncompressed raw 14bit files. The Nikon D5 6,500$ shots 12 fps with continuous autofocus uncompressed 14bit raw files. My conclusion is that Sony shoots lower quality raw photos at 12 fps and even much lower at 20fps than the Canon and Nikon flagships. Nevertheless the Sony a9 is the king of all mirrorless cameras. I bet that Sony a9R and Sony a9S are coming. The Sony a9S will be a hell of a camera. 20 fps with uncompressed 14bit raw files is very demanding for the image processors today.

Let's see how it will clear the buffer with two cards inside. That's what everyone is talking about. Only one of the card slots are fast. When you put two cards and write in them simultaneously then write speed is limited to the slowest card. We know that you don't use two cards but pretty much everybody else (if camera allows) does. The main reason for that is backup. "you have only one chance to get it right! " - whoops, sorry angry bride, I don't have your wedding pictures, memory card died.
