Now I got my A9III, I tested it with Elinchrom, Broncolor Satos 3200 and Sony HVL-F60RM2 flashes. The flash speed you get out of the Sony HVL-F60RM2 is absolutely mind blowing. The flash processor and the camera processor talk to each other and automatically does all the adjustment. This small 60 Joule flash works at in Hi+ (120fps), 1/16000, f/1.8, ISO 250 without any problem. Every pictures is perfectly sharp, with excellent colour. Just put it into the hot shoe on the A9III and start shooting in any mode. No fiddling, nothing. This is by far the best speed-light for SONY cameras. Nothing comes close. Period. With AF-C, the flash automatically adjust the exposure to where you focus the camera while tracking a fast moving object. Forget all the other flashes.

How does ISO performance compare in notable cameras from different eras (5D, 700D, D90, 5DIII, A7, A7III, Eos R, Z6, recent models etc...)? What about Dynamic Range, burst rate, viewfinder etc.? I was able to play briefly with a preproduction that a tech rep had. The other problem with the flash is that as your shutter speed goes up, your timing setup in the camera has to be more precise. So part of why your images are not as well exposed as your shutter speed raises is that you are not fully syncing the shutter release and the flash duration any longer. As your window of time that is your shutter speed narrows, you are no longer fully lined up with the flash, so instead of half black frames that would be caused by a mechanical shutter, you are improperly exposed.

Dude, when this camera was first announced I thought it was pretty far from anything I would want. Been waiting on the a7s IV myself. But then as I’ve seen the video applications in action, I’m about 3/4 of the way to deciding to buy one of these bad boys. Video looks insanely good and perfect for me and the way I shoot my fitness clients.

It means it’s time for flash manufacturers to start producing higher power LED flashes, or companies like Rotolight to up their ante as well. I love my a1 but in certain circumstances the global shutter of the a9 III.. I’ll spend this quarters gear budget on the 300 2.8 GM and wait till we get more and more user feedback on the a9 III for possibly a Sept-November purchase

My biggest gripe is that Sony declared this camera to have no compromise while having a global shutter.

1* No compromise compared to first generation Alpha Camera based on Sony internal research.

Yea that's dumb, the camera is great for those who need that feature, but they ruined the reputation by claiming it has zero compromises while it definitely has some, albeit not deal breaker but still...

@@v0ldy54ruined their reputation? That’s a reach. The camera will be used and loved by many

Given that most content are delivered and seen on small, 5-6-7 inch displays mostly, people really overestimate how much does noise matters in the end.

This camera is such a niche camera, I loved the original A9, the A9ii was such a minor update and now the A9iii, makes the huge price jump with so many drawbacks, really makes me miss what the non-global shutter version could have been. Curious what this will mean for the A1 ii, seems like the global shutter compromises are really polarizing for your flagship body.

A Rolling Shutter A9iii would have been pointless dude. How would it outdo the A1? It wouldn't as it offers nothing new. A9iii with a Global Shutter sensor now just revolutionize the camera world like the A9 did back in 2017. Call it a niche all you want, but 5 years from now, we will see more cameras with Global Shutter sensors as Sony lay the roadmap for camera tech again.

With the blackout free shooting, can you output clean HDMI to a ninja v while shooting photos, to get both photos and video simultaneously? Or will the footage have some strobing effect to it?

i don't plan on buying one (think $$$), but the combination of pre-capture and global shutter for small (=fast) bird photography seems very promising.

Dare I say: Sony's new skin colour is Fujifilm-like, in an uncanny way! Thank you for a great review, plus, a high-speed flash use workshop. If the Jordan running scene, is yet to become culturally altering meme what are you even doing there at Petapixel! Run Jordan Drake, ruuun... Finally, the graded video out of this camera and sensor always strikes me as natural looking! I would love to own one for documentary films.

Why the hell doesnt the camera sample the flash at a given shutter speed and then either adjusts for peak power or gives you the reading to manually adjust the sensor read delay? This trial and error seems so 1980. It perhaps makes for a good conversation starter and benis comparison, but is not optimal.

I am returning mine after 5 days of use ! this camera is definitely not for flash photography/ studio ! first of all shutter speed goes at max at 16000 shutter speed at multiple mode shoot only. 80000 shutter speed is only in single mode shoot! color shits are all along those variable speeds you need to sync flash manually in order to shoot with variable shutter speed, and it's time consuming, and i suspect that its still not accurate and it might be the reason for power color shits strength light intensity inaccuracy .Another issue is the noise and Aperture change at values like f8 noise is so big and noticeable that it makes picture not usable bottom line its a real downer on photography side but videography is definitely a big high
