Thanks for the videos, I've watched and enjoyed a lot of them! Re. cheap old DVD or BR players, I've been messing around with those a bit recently and bought several and tried to mod them. But eventually the one thing that made me give up on them, was the noise all of their drive units made. Which I just couldn't get rid of with the usual cleaning, many attempts at damping, and even one (very crude) conversion into a tray-less top-loader. So I'm looking forward to the upcoming videos on this player, hope to learn something about that issue.

I have this same player and didn’t realise it played SACDs! I use the SPDiF out though so probably not worth me getting any SACDs.

I would imagine these are SACD rips rather than the actual SACD format, possibly done with a Sony PS3 so is most likely the reason your Sony can’t play them. I expect they’re actually hires files. I'm pretty sure it's still not technically possible to do a copy of an SACD the same way like you can copy a cd as they come from the factory.

The SACD rips to a DVD-R are exactly the same as a SACD, no loss or different files, the structure is the exact same as a full SACD disc.. the only thing that stops them playing on some SACD capable players is the manufacturer has blocked some aspects of DVD-R disc playback, given the correct machine.. a Denon DVD-3910 for example, you can play a SACD-R / DVD-R without any issues, a DVD-R with the SACD data recorded onto it is identical to the original SACD, they have the FULL SACD data streams intact, you can switch from multi channel to stereo stream in exactly the same way you can with an Original SACD if it originally has those two streams, the only possible difference is when the SACD used had a CD layer, the CD layer cannot be copied to the same DVD-R with the fully intact SACD layers, as the hybrid CD/SACD disc has two different physical layers, one for the SACD data stream or streams, and one for the redbook CD data, this isn't possible using a DVD-R disc.

It’s possible to rip the DSD data from an SACD bit perfectly using some PS3 models or various Blu-Ray players (with special firmware, as I have done). Copying the data into a DVD-R creates a DVD Datadisc, not an SACD. To make an SACD requires SACD authoring software, which includes data encryption. This is also available if you look for it

The manufacturers split into DVD-R and DVD+R camps, IIRC. P.I.T.A.
