Keep in mind that the Sony Burano has some impressive and unique features that others don’t. For single camera operators and small crews I can’t think of any better camera today. The price tag is quite high though, I agree with that. I think 15K to 19K would have been better suited for the current market.

The Burano is in a weird place in the market. I dont think it will do as well as Sony had hoped, especially for the price. It's just so niche. I think it should've served as the direct replacement to the FX9, and priced around $15,000.

I agree with the price tag being quite high, but the Burano is also a far superior cinema camera than the FX9 in every way. The internal 16-bit RAW X-OCN codec alone makes it much more interesting and powerful with incomparably greater latitude in post. Not even mentioning all other features. The FX9 has always been way overpriced since day one for what it offers, I even find the FX6 a better camera for most projects at less than half the price. I actually think the Burano will do relatively well as there’s some really impressive and unique features.

It’s not that expensive cheaper than a raptor with internal ND and was better auto focus. 16 stops of dynamic range. And Sonys raw codex xocn is going to color grade way better than an fx6

It’s too bad they missed on the viewfinder though, feels like this is just a few tweaks away from being a beast cinema camera. I still want to rent it for a wedding just for fun but I can see it will take a good bit of getting familiar with and setting up before it can be used effectively on that sort of shoot

The Burano looks like the all bells and whistles doc camera with high res, RAW, IBIS, autofocus, internal ND, etc etc, but that rolling shutter IS disappointing for a docs camera - if they had made it with a global shutter I think it would really have stood out at that price point and suited its purpose perfectly. Easy for me to say and I'm sure a nightmare to do, but Sony did produce a global shutter camera in the past and the Komodo has that too, so why not? I think it will do very well in Europe at least, because since the Fs7, few people buy anything other than Sony for higher-end videography and doc work, so it will be the latest shiny new object to get.

Also I did a side by side of the Burano (RAW) and my FX3 (same sensor as the FX6) on my channel and it’s 99% identical under most shooting scenarios in which you don’t need the color depth. Not sure I agree with needing to shoot the Burano dumbed down to match the FX6.

More so comes down to difference out of camera. I prefer the Burano color to fx3/6. If you want to match them on set as an A/B then you’ll need a lut for fx3/6 to match plus Burano is just such a sharper camera that it’s hard to match their sharpness. Also being that they are two different base ISO on the high end, might end up making things a little extra challenging if you plan to be in the second band trying to match under/over middle grey

You can easily match colors between all Sony’s Cinema Line cameras, you won’t have much to do in post as they all have the same color science. As long as you expose properly it’s quite straightforward. In fact, you can even match the colors of an FX3 with an Arri or RED in post, it’s really not that difficult, 10-bit XAVC S-I is solid enough if the footage is properly captured.

@@NorthwestCameraCo take a Quick Look at my comparison. It’s my latest video and under 120 seconds in length. The colors out of the FX series cameras match almost completely with the Burano and can be intercut without needing to worry. I agree with you on sharpness, there’s no denying that. The Burano is sharper. The only “matching” I needed to do to my footage was 3-5 points of blue added to the FX3 footage to account for natural variances in sensor tolerances. There was no LUT needed to match the two, I used the same rec709 transform. I only want to point this out so people don’t think that they can’t match the two cameras without a lot of work. That’s simply not the case.

Great video! I’ve been testing my unit as well. Just wanted to point out something about media- the warning that pops up is NOT due to using a Non-Sony card. It’s due to using a non-VPG-400 certified card. That certification comes from a third party to ensure consistent read & write speeds when under load. I used a third party VPG-400 certified card and it removed that warning. Also, I had a friend tell me that he tested a long take on a non-VPG card and the card failed after a while due to temps. Just worth pointing out! That being said, I agree that the Sony cards are disgustingly marked up.

The footage looks great, there's no doubt about that, but I can't help but feel like the Burano is another example of how we have reached 'peak camera' at least for the time being. There are so many capable cameras out there, a point you prove by putting the Burano next to a much older and cheaper camera like a C500ii or an FX6. I just don't see that the Burano takes things that much further. You could spend that extra money on talent, crew, locations, lenses, lighting etc. I'm interested to see how well it does in the market though and whether or not it gets adopted.

Great video! Interesting thoughts at the end. I’m a Venice 1 owner and feel like this will slide right in with the X-OCN pipeline, whereas the FX6 was too different in look and codec and high base iso. But it is in an interesting hybrid to be sure.

Really great video. The latitude looks amazing. Rolling shutter is a bummer simply because we have faster options at the same price. The comparison to the Amira makes a lot of sense. Definitely an appeal of the Amira's readout of 7ms against 16 especially for say sports. Big resolution difference though.

This is a near perfect camera for all intents and purposes but it’s hard to justify the 25k price tag considering you can get both an FX6 and an FX3 together for under 10k. I suspect a price drop, however long that takes, along with firmware updates will significantly boost the Burano’s popularity. This camera will be relevant for a long time.

We did do a side by side of Burano and fx6 in terms of color and over exposure. Hard to see without chapters. Hoping to get some chapters in the video first thing in the morning. But Burano really is a better image in terms of color, latitude and ability in post. That being said you can dumb it down to match easily. And honestly if Sony puts 8.6 to 4k xavc-I mode so it’s a little more apples to apples, we will revisit :)

Honestly man I think the FX6 looks better. The Burano skin looks a little pink and blotchy. I’m sure we could get them both to match better. But the more I see footage from Burano, the less excited I am about the camera. I had one on pre-order with my local shop and then canceled it when I saw the first bit of footage. It’s the same readout speed as the c500ii but with 2.5k more resolution. People have shot tons and tons of stuff on the c500ii and continue to with great success. Lots of doc work, corporate, tv and more. Could it be better to match raptor and V2 and Alexa, sure. But, at 15ms it’s not going to stop you from shooting 90 percent of available work. Also remember that the bar for viewers is low. A staggering percentage of consumed media is being shot on cell phones. 15ms of rolling shutter is going to be not perceived to most viewers. But if rolling shutter is a top priority in 2024 v raptor x is hard to beat.

@@NorthwestCameraCo As an example with some vertical lines for analysis in "real-world" footage, I think during the autofocus testing section from 24:20 in the video demonstrates some pretty jerky, rough, cinema verite stuff where, even when I'm concentrating on finding some, I am hard pressed to see ANY, let alone any notable rolling shutter artifacts. If you're shooting INDYCAR or martial arts or something, I'd recommend a different camera, for sure. But for just about 100% of what I'm ever likely to shoot, it's gonna be a non-issue.

I’m only 4:00 into this video so I’m not sure what your opinions are yet but this is just such a weird camera to me. There’s virtually zero scenario where I would buy this over a V Raptor X, or even the standard V raptor for that matter. I know there’s Sony faithfuls who will absolutely buy it and love it. But brand loyalists aside, this is a bizarre platform for most people. I’m hardly unbiased as I just picked up the V raptor X but I looked long and hard at the burano before buying and it just sits in a really weird place. I feel they could have made the burano the FX9 mark ii and even raised the price and that would have made so much more sense. I’m fully aware the differences between CineAlta and the FX line which is a totally different conversation as to why they both exist but all that to say, I really feel like Sony’s cinema camera lineup is pretty muddy in isolation and certainly in comparison to the rest of the market as well.

100 percent agree. We actually state this in our Raptor X video that’s coming out Monday. But I think sony starting with the Venice and having the fx9 means it can only do so much between those cameras. Personally I look at this camera for Amira type work. If you think of it as sitting out to the side like Amira was to Alexa line, it makes a lot more sense

One being the more doc/single op/corporate style camera and one the more crew oriented/feature focused camera like the Amira/Alexa relationship. I think at that point the confusion does become about the Cine Alta vs FX line and where they sit in relationship to each other. When CineAlta was just the Venice there was clear differentiation between lines to make sense especially since the FX line has always been geared a little more towards single operators anyways. But now there's a really blurred line between the two and the crossover feels unnecessary. Albeit, I'm aware that everyones preferences and use cases are super nuanced and the burano will be a no-brainer for a lot of people. It's just a weird one for me haha

The nitpicking of what's considered a cinema camera vsa documentary camera is ridiculous these days. These are all cinema cameras. Your budget is what makes the difference. If you can't make fx6 footage work, you need s better DP. If the color science of the Burano "doesn't look good" to you, you're color blind. You may have your preference, you may want Arri because it's "better" but just about ANYTHING you can buy in today's market is damn good in comparison to what was available ten years ago. And those films still hold up, if not better, and that's not because it wasn't shot on a Sony fx fill in the blank. Know your lighting. Know your lenses. Know your story. Shoot with what you can get your hands on

The 3:2 mode on the Venice 2 is also 8640 pixels wide, but 5760 pixels tall, sony markets resolution purely on horizontal resolution

I see repeatedly in case of SONY cameras tendency to define face skin as "purple". I see the same tendency in Burano. As I think, this is major problem of all Sony cameras. To keep color palette and reliability of other colors, skin tone in SONY cameras must be defined as "purple-ish". This eliminates SONY cameras from serious tasks, and to my surprise SONY does nothing to eliminate the problem. They ignore it.

I’m one minute in, and based on how much the skin tones fluctuate in the opening sequence here, I would be tempted to say the Burano color science isn’t very good (which I’m quite sure is not the case). Someone needs to go back and get these shots to match better. Some of the skin tones (on my iPad screen anyway) are very red and unnatural, some are creamy white, and some are more of a peachy caucasian look. Anyway, moving on.

In my opinion 15ms isn’t awful at all. Not in 95 percent of shooting scenarios. That’s why we didn’t say much. Been using c500ii for years now with same readout and zero issues. If it was 30ms it would be a different story. But 15ms on an 8.6k sensor is pretty solid in my book. I’ve been shooting for almost 15 years now and have yet to have a client mention anything relating to rolling shutter and this is through the 5d days even.

@@NorthwestCameraCo interesting… I actually have the c500ii, and the rolling shutter has never been an issue! Where can I find documentation that actually has the read out speed? Do you have any links?

@@patchandy cine d did a read out speed test on c500ii and lauded it as being incredible at 15ish MS readout speed. Very similarly Burano is 15ish. I think Cine D did a test on Burano also as well as CVP

Funny cuz we just sold one of our Buranos. Sony is probably my personal least favorite system to work with.

Sony color science was good enough for Greig Fraser, Oren Soffer, Gareth Edwards, Claudio Miranda, Kôzô Shibasaki etc. If you're gonna buy or not buy a camera of this calibre based on some vague notions "color science", honestly your money is better spent on film school or something.

Sony is nowadays one of the most popular cameras for high end productions like Hollywood feature films, including Academy-Award winning films. Try to keep up, it’s nice in the present. Anyway, moving on.

@@Mionwang while I do believe that with a good enough colorist and a thick raw negative you can manipulate any higher end cinema camera to look great, the team behind the Creator definitely didn't choose FX3 because of its color, but because of extreme low light capability + small form factor.

@@DastanZhumagulov you don't even need raw. Sony have come a long way and their color science is really incredible now. Anyone who complains about modern Sony cameras having bad colors absolutely doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean sure, one may prefer one over the other, but calling either one bad is just plain wrong. Besides, if you can afford to shoot on an Alexa, red or Venice, you really ought to be working with your colorist before production and develop a show lut to monitor on set. At which point, manufacturer color science would be the least of your concerns. By the way, just go through the list of movies that were shot on Sony on Sony's official website. If it was good enough for them, it should be good enough for the random KZbin viewer.

@@Mionwang sure, not arguing with most of what you said, but I find you implying that FX3/FX6/Burano footage is as good as Venice 1/2 misleading. Also no one's saying that the image from those lower tier Sony cameras is outright bad. It's just not as good as the flagship cameras.
