Since I've never formally introduced my Sony BVM-D24E1WU, I figured I'd give it a full on review of what this monitor is capable of.

Cool monitor. Nice video. I picked up a JVC multi-format recently and haven't messed with the SDI yet nor do I know much about it. But if all it takes is a HDMI > SDI converter, i'll try that out so I can hook up some newer consoles.
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's all it takes. Just keep in mind that not all consoles will work well with certain HDMI to HD-SDI converters. One big culprit is the PS4. The HDCP encryption is very particular and will require a splitter or a special converter to display properly on your monitor.

Awesome man. The BVM's are quite intimidating with the added requirement of that control box. I picked up a PVM 20M4U a few months back and still need to find some speakers to use with it. I also need to figure out how to hook up some other systems to it. So far it's been dedicated to SNES. Killer setup!
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 6 жыл бұрын
I think that's a great combo. Finding the right speakers is a must. Remember, the speakers need to be shielded. If you put them too close to a CRT, you'll have a rainbow effect on screen that could potentially damage your PVM permanently.
@chal1821
@chal1821 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah i'm pretty happy with it. I still haven't bothered with speakers, haha. I'm not a big sound guy so i don't mind the built-in mono speaker right now. I appreciate that heads up about the rainbow effect and potential damage it can cause. I got it dialed in about as well i can using service mode . I haven't invested in anymore cables to hook up other systems yet. I put up a couple videos showing it off if you care to check them out. Thanks for the reply bro it's nice talkin to ya. I didn't think you would respond haha. You have some impressive systems and monitors! I also have one really weird question that you may be able to help with. Do you have any tips on removing the plastic rivets that hold the PVM 20M4U's shell in place? Mine are being stubborn and i actually damaged one trying to take them out. I'd like to be able to dust out the inside periodically

That's a really sweet picture from the Sony BVM 24". I was wondering whether you find the 24" kind of small for gaming purposes, especially if one is used to larger HD consumer tvs? A low usage 32" BVM-D is probably extremely difficult to find, while the newer BVM-A requires the expensive & rare rgb adapter card. Also, is it even possible to consolidate/auto-switch all the audio inputs from your consoles when using a soundbar, as the BVM-D doesn't have any audio capability (RCA or S/PDIF)? I would barely have enough space for a BVM-D in my room, and no way to fit a receiver/5 channel speaker setup. Thanks!!

For 16:9 games, the image has slight overscan but that's nothing that can't be fixed, especially with my DVDO iScan HD+. Regardless, the image is crystal clear. In my humblest opinion, I would go as far to say it compares to your modern day LCD, maybe even an LED. In 4:3 mode, the image measures somewhere between 16" - 17" depending on the console you use. As much as I'd love to get my hands on a 32" BVM, it's amazingly heavy and amazingly expensive. Good luck if you decide to track it down. Since the line count stays at 1000, the image is amazingly clear. Definitely not the best CRT to play a 4 player game like Goldeneye or any onscreen 4 player games. I've been looking into getting a modern stereo receiver to act not only as a audio switcher, but more as an HDMI switcher for my BKM-42HD card. What's stopping me is the cost lol.

Question: Which card are you using for PS3? I’ve noticed that when I use the 21D I get ghosting artifacts. For example in the texts in the PS3 menu. When I use the 41HD the ghosting is gone. BTW I’m using HD retrovision cables and. gcompsw. Is the card just not as capable for component or would you think I’d need a recap.
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 3 жыл бұрын
I think I was using the stock analog card inside of the D24. I recall speaking with Pat (retired Sony tech) and he mentioned that the 21D has the worst image quality of analog inputs. If possible, just use the internal card, or look to get a 24N. As far as recaps go, I wouldn't advise it. There's a lot of caps and it may not even be the issue to begin with.

Do you even need the DVDO when converting HDMI to SDI? Just curious
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude. I wouldn't say it's a requirement for converting HDMI to SDI, but I've come to learn that there are a few benefits of having it thrown into this particular set up. The HDMI to SDI conversion on an aspect ratio level isn't perfect. I'm not sure if it's my HDMI to SDI converter box, but the image appears to be slightly overscanned. This happens to all my HDMI sources. What I found out about the DVDO iScan HD+ is you can adjust the overscan and underscan ratio very nicely. Unfortunately, the BKM-42HD's SDI input will only accept a 720p or 1080i signal. So you're probably asking, why don't I use the RGB inputs on the bottom portion of the card? Well, there are certain consoles that are HDMI only, such as my Analogue Nt or even the Xbox One X. It will allow me to convert any incoming 1080p only sources to either 720p or 1080i. It will also upscale any 480p image to be viewed at 720p or 1080i. Depending on which DVDO model you have, you can create custom timings in the resolution to convert the incoming signal to 240p to create scanlines. Once again, and I can't stress this enough, my set up may not fit the needs of many. However, it seems to be working for me and I thought I'd share this info for those looking to obtain similar results.

Hi all I have just bought a Sony BVM D24E1WE and It has just arrived today the seller that I bought it off said it was working and he sent me photos of it working before he sent it. I spent hours setting it up and I plugged it in and turned it on for the first time and nothing It won't turn on at all it makes the normal click sound when you turn the power switch on and it makes the click sound when I turn it off. on the front of the BVM the lights don't light up at all the standby light should light up when I turn the power switch on but no lights turn on. I can see inside the BVM there is one green light lit up on the power adapter so I don't know what the issue is I have removed all the modules and plugged them back in and still nothing happens the BKM-10R won't light up or do anything. have any of you had this issue with a Sony BVM before?
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 4 жыл бұрын
It reminds me of an issue I used to have with my PVM-20L5. When I would put in an incompatible BKM card, it would make 2 clicks and show nothing on that input. I would try removing all the BKM cards and turn it on as it. If the problem persists, try asking Partick Gravier. You can search his name on Google or his eBay listed as "Savon Pat" He might recommend you sending in the deflection boards to him. Since you have an E model I'm assuming you're in Europe somewhere, but just know that Patrick is located in the US in California.

Since the famicom or SMD only output 240p, you won't need an L5 series or BVM to play them. Also, ask yourself what size you're looking for. I'd say a great PVM to start out with and it's a good size is something like the PVM-20M2U (or E if you're in Europe).

Hey just wondering if 1080i is worth it over 720p on this magnificent monitor?
@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 2 жыл бұрын
I would say yes. CRTs process 1080i resolutions very well. Although people might argue that it has lower bandwidth than 720p, I don’t really see much of a difference. The only immediate difference I can tell between the two is 720p has a very slightly softer look than 1080i. 1080i comes off as a tad bit sharper in image quality.

@Ex_Savior
@Ex_Savior 6 жыл бұрын
I don't feel the need to share the price that I paid for this BVM for several reasons: The current market value for these items always fluctuates. The same monitors can increase from a few hundred to even a thousand, depending on supply and demand. Prices vary from country to country. The demand for BVMs is rather high in the United States, whereas the the demand for BVMs in say, Germany or China, isn't as high. Therefore, the cost of said BVM is not going to be a direct reflection of the current market price. The market value can also depend on the same model depending on many factors, such as cosmetic appearances, card options, and operation hours. People in this community don't seem to understand that the prices for these monitors will constantly go up. There are some people that have obtained monitors from a few years back and will insist that the prices for these monitors shouldn't go up this much, and to them I congratulate them for having such hindsight for what became very sought after items for retro gamers. Ultimately, it's no one's business what anyone pays for anything and that should be respected.

Hi! Awesome monitor, looks super crisp! I just got one myself! Quick question, does your monitor show a weird diagonal line that disappears when you power the monitor on / initializing screen? I have a link to a video of my monitor doing this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5zUdoaqi8ejr9E I heard this may be a normal thing that the D24's do. Thanks!

Yes, it does actually! I spoke to Patrick Gravier about it and he said it's perfectly normal. I forgot what the lines are called, but it's nothing to be worried about.

Nice 4:3 crt! ,but this one is a little shorter in height, why? It didnt grow up like the others? Just kidding lol but its true they called a shorter version of 4:3 "widescreen display" I just call a not grow up 4:3...lol I rather prefer a 4:3 one... beautifull display btw congrats!

LOL! I'll admit I don't have the same amount of enthusiasm (or triceps) as phonedork does, but I felt just making this more of a personal review, so you'll have to excuse the dryness haha.

@@retros4168 I'd like to make a video about this content soon. I have a 980ti video card and haven't really put it to good use on my BVM!

watching video is a waste of bvm hours, id rather 100% retro game on it. netflix content can be viewed on any crappy lcd tv.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. I like to balance out my lifestyle with games and shows/movies. Some of the best video playback content, all analog and digital, has been significantly better looking than any modern display I own. It's been a few years since I've owned this D24 and I've barely made a dent in the hours it was bought with. I'm not afraid to use this in anyway shape or form I deem fit. Why buy something if you're not gonna use it?

You think you'll get 3 grand for that? I got two for $50 lol. They are sick don't get me wrong. No one would pay that. I find it hilarious how much money waste on retro gaming. It has become such a hipster hobby and made the prices get out of hand.

dhhhfxfg I do actually. I've been watching the auctions for these monitors when they pop up and one sold on 1/8/18 for $2,500. And if you got yours for $50 each, congratulations! You invested in them at the right time.

dhhhfxfg probably just doesn’t know the difference between a consumer TV and a BVM. You say $3000 is expensive, when this Monitor retails for $30,0000+. At $3000 it would still have depreciated in value over 90%. He probably just picked up 2 cheap TVs for $50, which he overpaid by $50 because consumer crts can be had for free, lol.
