Just picked one of these up at a thrift store for $6 and when I got it home I found out the tray wouldn't retract and discs wouldn't spin up. Cleaned everything and greased the gears up and it's working perfectly so thank you!

My CDP-491 had a different problem -- when trying to load a disc, the door would close properly but then immediately reopen without playing it. Sometimes after about 30 tries it would eventually play. Removing the belt and cleaning it with alcohol did the trick. Works perfectly again. Your video helped. Thanks.

I like it when opening a mechanism and all the parts spring out like a jack-in-the-box😆As far as smells are concerned, I had come across a receiver with a mold issue. After cleaning everything with alcohol then placing it in a plastic bag with an ion generator cured the problem after several days of treatment 🤢

Really helpful video. I have a similar model and the mechanism wasn't rising to spin the disk. Turned out to be the belt slipping. Quick clean with some alcohol and good as new.

You must clean the limiter switch located at cd board. This switch detects the inner position of optical unit. That switch became oxidated and some times a bad contact happens. I worked over 25 years in a sony service center here in Brazil. I know this kind of mechanism very well. If the limiter switch fail the tray opens and do not closes anymore because the cpu think that the optical unit isn't at the inner position.

I have a similar one, door opens and closes fine, but the motor does not spin and it gives "No Dissk" error. Cleaned the lens, also the lens is moving back and forth for focusing. Any idea on this problem. No idea on which pot to turn to increase gain of the laser unit. Any help is appreciated.

sony cdp-56 similar type (made in France) , the headphone amplifier is very good.

boil the belt is water for about 15 mins..sometimes make them work..

Ya that was a great player u can adjust the potentiometers if it has trouble reading for track offset and optical alignment the 3 on the pickup head this unit do optical focus track gain and track offset these did have a richer sound but degraded with wear n tear

just a few squirt of there wd40 and it is good as new
