This is an old mid 80's portable radio cassette CD player with an intermittent power issue. Very common fault.

Nice repair! I think this one was worth saving, even if it wasn't by special request. Funny, I was just thinking the build quality was pretty good, others say it's not. I certainly compares well to the $35 boom boxes you get at Big Lots these days!

It kills me that the Japanese will keep the wire lengths so short as to make repair so difficult to save money in production but place 15 screws in the case to keep it together. These units were certainly never meant to be repaired that easily. I remember my first day in electronics... My teacher said" always check the power supply"
@tookitogo
@tookitogo 5 жыл бұрын
1pilotsteve Wouldn’t you want to keep the wires short to minimize interference, as well as to stop them from flopping around inside, causing both audible rattles and movement that could ultimately result in wire failure? My hunch is that the added cost of longer wires is less than the added cost of the more difficult labor to assemble it.

These things are way more cheaply built than i thought. These were built back in Sony's 90s heyday, 1996-1998 maybe? When I was a teenager, I had the top of the line version of this chassis that had an auto reverse tape deck, digital tuner, cloth speaker grilles, and an IR remote. That thing wasnt cheap either. I want to say it was 150 dollars. I am wondering what the inside of one of them looks like. The V10, V15, and V30 were very common models. I have never seen many of the high end models. The one I had was a CFD-S39

You obviously never saw the brightly colored plastic toy electronics made for little kids. The My first Sony line of portable radios were aimed at the vtech and fisher price aged kids, but with a Sony price. I have a picture out of the local rag when I worked at the shop and we were moving to a bigger store, and the 3 of us at the shop posed loading a Toyota van with crap. The boss had the my first sony recorder in his hands, I think I had a handycam in a box, and the other salesman had something else. If I find that picture I will put it up on my bench as a prop in a future video.

@@12voltvids oh wow. I have never really seen any of that My First Sony stuff up close. I had the poverty brown KB Toys Nasta "Take A Long" kids cassette deck (look it up if you don't know what I mean, you'll probably know it when you see it) when I was a kid in the early 80s. Those things were JUNK. I wasn't even rough on them, and a specifically remember going to buy a new one multiple times to replace the one that broke from regular use. The takeup or supply hub would just snap off from inserting and removing cassettes. You'd think that we should've bought a higher quality kids deck after the first one, but I think they were like 12.99 or something ridiculously cheap. They just came in a colorful unbranded box that said Cassette player recorder on the front.

NORMALIZATION OF IGNORANCE I thought the my first Sony stuff used the same type of plastic as the sports models. I always wanted a sports Walkman, but I ended up with a Panasonic Shockwave, which had more features for the price, but no dolby.

Nice fix. I bet it has better sound quality than present day cheap boombox players. Bought myself last year brand new Sony boombox with cd & cassette player and the sound quality is really thin, even with the bass booster switched on. My old 1992 Sharp boombox has much better sound quality but the CD player is broken, it's skipping and stuttering and the mechanism which moves the laser head is noisy. you're more than likely took out the power transformer you're going to have to find a new power transformer that outputs the correct output voltage and has the correct input voltage for your country in other words a 220 input and it's likely a 12 volt output. Chances are there's no other damage

@@12voltvids Thanks for your quick response. So this transformer is inside the device, because I did get a step-down convertor plug eventually (220 to 110) but it still doesn't work. To Sony's credit, this is better assembled than I had expected. And even the speakers seem to be quite allright for what it is. For looks, never liked this design, not even when it was brand new. As black plastic as it gets, reminds me of the dash of a Nissan Sunny. And everything got so rounded up from the mid 90s onwards, like it would make what otherwise would be a plastic box look more attractive. It did not ofcourse. Forgetable radio ;-)

Are you sure it isn't running on batteries. With batteries installed and the AC cord inserted, if you unplug the AC cord from the wall it should go out, If not then it is running on batteries, and batteries are not needed on AC. There is a switch that gets activated when you plug the AC cord into the radio. If the wrong cord is used it may not be wide enough to activate the switch. In this case wrap a few turns of tape around the end of the plug to make it a little wider to activate the switch.

It shuts down when you unplug it. If I remove the batteries when its plugged in it also shuts down.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
@@PaulCTownsend So then it is not operating on AC. The switch that changes it from batteries to AC is not being activated. Most likely the wrong size cord is plugged in. Try wrapping some tape around the and of the plug to increase its size slightly. Otherwise the connector on the radio may be broken (the switch part) so the power cord is not activating it. There is a leaf switch that when there is no cord plugged in supplies power from the batteries. When you plug in the cord the leaf switch contact moves from the battery terminal wire to the power supply wire.
