Two more thoughts. I took photos before and after the opera the other night at the Civic Opera house in Chicago. I was amazed at the detail I was able to get, hand held, in a darkened auditorium, from a balcony hundreds of feet away from and several stories above the stage. Second- Has anyone found the EVF seriously discounted, new or used anywhere? The existence of the EVF was one of the features I liked about this camera but I had no idea that it would cost more than the camera itself.

Great videos and reviews! You ve been very helpful to amateurs like me. I have one question regarding the hx50v, when you need the flash it pops up automatically or you have to do it manually?

Is the hx50v good for sports?
@TheDigitalDigest11 жыл бұрын
I think you are referring to the clear image zoom which extends the optical range to a 60X equivalent using an algorithm which effectively crops the image in camera. The feature is serviceable and arguably the best form of digital zoom out there but it has its limitations. Clear image zoom fares better with larger sensors like those found in the RX100 and NEX cameras.
@TheDigitalDigest11 жыл бұрын
They really shouldn't be compared but always will be. It really comes down to personal needs. Do you need the best image quality in your pocket or the most flexibility. If you choose the latter because you would rather have the extensive features and you aren't a pixel peeper, you will be pleased with the HX50V. As I continue to say, the HX50V takes some great shots but if IQ is what you are after the RX100 is the pocket champ.

I bought this camera after trying the Lumix GX7 because it was too big. The RX 100 didn't have other features I like, such as GPS. I liked the features of the Lumix but I often shoot one-handed while walking the dog or driving. This fits my hand and takes excellent photos in decent light. It fits the way I use my camera. I would love a touch screen that works the way the screen on my LG phone works, where I can change both the focus and the exposure by touching a different portion of the screen but I guess I can't have everything. And of course, I would like it if the evf were affordable. But that is another story.

Great review. I've just ordered the RX100 M2 but after seeing this perhaps I should get this too? What do you think DD?
@Hennypenny88889 жыл бұрын
Get the 'V' version with GPS. The newly released HX90V is all I want in a compact camera, but the HX90V is now only £189 at Currys/PC World. Wait a few more weeks, and the price will plummet even more. You should be able to buy a used HX50V for under £100

Thanks for the review. I've been shooting an R100 for a little over a week; didn't hear about the HX50V 'till I stumbled across your videos. Do you receive these items for review or are they purchased? I've never heard you say anything too critical. I like the way you 'place' products between older and more/less expensive products. How many photos/videos have you shot before posting this update?

Hey DigitalDigest, I have a question. I have this camera and I also have a Sony external mic that I bought a year or so ago for my Sony Handycam. However, since this camera only has a Micro USB port, how would I use my external mic with it? The mic has a headphone like jack at the end, not a micro USB. Thank for the help!

You said this Sony DSC-HX50V outperforms the DSC-WX300. Have you had a chance to test the newer model DSC-WX350 and if so how does it stack up with the HX50V? Lets say hypethetically the zoom and physical size of the cameras being equal which one performs better W/ stills and video? Thanks!

This video is 7 years old. I just found this camera in good condition on eBay for $30 auction. that's a very good deal.

While nothing has been confirmed, it would make sense based on the RX100's success and age that a replacement is on the way. I still prefer to avoid this comparison (not sure you were comparing) because the RX100's sensor really provides a different solution than the feature laden HX50V. If you meant you want to pick up the RX100 if the RX200 isn't a month or 3 from launch, I unfortunately don't have any info for you. I can say the RX100 is amazing which is why its price is firm to this day.

Thx for the reply.Was not comparing rx100 and 50V......I can afford to wait 2-3 months to see if they release rx200. was fighting between NEX-6 and RX100 and finally decided on rx100, since it's a compact performer and I am a very rookie photographer.....I enjoy the videos!!! keep em coming.

Help needed! I am menu challenged. I have trouble drilling through the menus and figuring out how to set what I want. The pdf manuals provided by Sony are detailed but not really helpful in understanding options. Is there a good user guide out there, such as the ones written for some of the mirrorless cameras?

Fantastic zoom and IS. IQ is very good. ExmorR processor helps with low light so low light performance super for such a small sensor. Best small Super Zoom out there. My gripe is there is no RAW also I wish the HX50V had the same menu system as the RX100/m2. Nice color rendition. You will find your self using it a lot as it is fast and zoom covers everything. Pano helps with the need of really wide angle shoots. Highly recommended. IQ not as good as RX100/m2 so get both.

One of the only fast lenses on mega zoom cameras are on the panasonic dmc-fz62 and fz200... They have a 24x zoom (24-600mm equivalent) and a fixed aperature of 2,8. :) But i like this one better, since its more compact.

So I'm just wondering if you know what model this camera might be, I was reading this magazine and it said there was a Sony cyber shot DSC hx with a 3D option. That shoots 3D photos and vedios, I had a friend send me a picture of the magazine because I didn't have my camera so I didn't see the model number, do you know witch one that might be?

I can't really call the Panny f2.8 fast when dealing with these sensors granted it is technically the fastest in its class. Panasonic has always had that bragging right but this camera will outperform it on a number of levels. Most importantly, as you pointed out, Sony has managed to get all of this into a compact body. great camera thus far.

I may have misspoke regarding zoom speed control in video mode. It seems that the zoom speed can only be manipulated when shooting stills. Lets hope that I am wrong because that would be a significant miss on Sony's behalf considering the ability is there but the follow through is not. If that is the case, lets hope it can be addressed in a firmware update despite the infrequency of such updates. This seems too easy to fix to let slide but stranger things have happened.

I've been looking for a camera for photos, that also has good 1090p / 60fps video. Do you still recommend this camera? I'm looking at getting a used one as my budget is only about $200, and this seemed like the perfect camera in my budget. One other camera I was looking at was the Canon Powershot SX 710, but from the reviews I've read it seems like the Sony has better video quality.

I have and love this camera, it will zoom digital lots passed x30. Its only problem for me is in sun the back screen is rubbish. It is heavy and not really pocket size. I hang around my neck in the Sony leather look case which looks great. I use this camera instead of my Fuji hs10 because smaller and over 100x digital zoom on right setting. I love this camera but wish back screen was better. There is an eye peace to attach to it but thats pricey so I don't have one. Use a mono or tripod on zooming. Again I love this camera because of Hugh zoom...
