Thanks for the great review! I've watched and read a few RX100MK3 reviews and you're the only one to mention that you can hold the power button while closing the EVF to keep the camera on. Everyone else either do not mention it or say they hope Sony fixes it in the next firmware update. That is why you're miles ahead of others in reviews!

Brilliant review. I had the first version, couldn't be bothered about the second one. Bought the third version (this one) recently. So good to have the selfie mode. Wi-fi transfer is a bit of a pain though. I need to check that.

I'm not sure if you've used a Canon G7X, but if so, I'd love to know which you think is the better of the two with regards to video quality and auto focusing. I've heard each one can be a bit unreliable with focus at times.

Hi John, Thanks for the review. I always find helpful and to the point. I would like to buy the camera but I am bit confused between Mark IV and Canon Mark II. Could you please recommend? Canon is about 300 USD cheaper. I am not a big fan of 4k video as I used only for still images.

Thank you! That's tough. I would go with the Mark IV to be honest. I find the EVF useful for certain situations but I also prefer the images I get out of the camera. Although, I do like the touchscreen on the Canon better.

Good review video! I already own one and I'm loving it :) Now, the high price tag maybe will turn down some people, but as John says you can always look at Mark 1 and Mark 2 models, they're both excellent compact cameras! Plus if you're looking for more alternatives, check out the Canon G7X. It's obvious the G7X is Canon's answer to the RX100 series, and it's a good compact camera as well! Cheaper than the RX100, but lacks the manual control. I'll always choose the RX100M3 over the GX7, but compare them yourselves and see which one suits your budget :)

when taking the photos shown here in japan did you have it in a manual mode where you were changes the settings or did you use the modes on the camera? need something to take travelling to get high quality images like this but without having to mess with manual modes as I have no idea about stuff like that.

I was shooting in "A" mode. So I was just adjusting the aperture but if you shoot in auto, its very capable of getting awesome shots. I just shot in "A" because I just want a little bit of manual control hehe.

You have the flip up LCD screen, a much better lens and XAVCS movie recording. Those are the main advantages.

Hi, I'm looking for a camera that is great for travelling, casual snaps that provide good quality photos. I've watched both this and your review on the a5100, I seem to like both of the concepts but I'm having difficulties in choosing lol. Which one do you recommend or prefer btwn this two cameras?? For me at the moment, I would lean toward the RX100M3. Its just a lot smaller and easier to bring around and plus you have the viewfinder but if you think you would want to be more creative with your photos you have the ability to change your lenses on the A5100.

I own a mark I and for light travelling I like it. But I miss the viewfinder. I have a lot of camera's and making photo's I am kind of addicted to a viewfinder. Is it worth the expensive update, yes I believe so. The new lens also nice, but I was happy with the RX100. Now I am waiting, order it online. 580 euro's. It is the viewfinder mainly, maeby I sell the mark I. It is not that I love the results, they are under par in comparison with my Canon 6D. But a 6D or in fact any camera is not so easy to take with you. I love this Sony for it's size.

Is the Depth of Field the same on all three of the cameras?

TheBlushRush It'll be very similar. If you're zooming in on the RX100M3 at F2.8 it will be better than the other two cameras because its using a better lens.

John. The first RX100 did not have a BSI sensore. The M2 and M3 does have a BSI which is probably why it is better in low light. How is the EVF? Is it as good as the one in the RX10? Do people with glasses accidently push in the view finder?

Ahh yes! That's right. Thanks for reminding me! I forgot all about it. The EVF is really good! The one on the RX10 is slightly better but hardly noticeable compared to the RX100M3. As far as I know, people with glasses haven't pushed in the viewfinder accidentally.

I would choose the RX100M3 if I were looking for a casual point and shoot and if you were looking for something with better quality the a6000 would be the one to go with.

TheBlushRush The RX100M3 would be the best, especially since it has the better video codec now. The camera is very capable of getting that blurry background.

hi john, i saw both your reviews for m3 and m5. im considering getting either an m3 or m5. the price difference is quite significant. is there much difference between the two? i'm not a professional photo taker and jsut use it for capturing travel moments.

If its mainly for photos, I think you'll be fine with the M3. The M5 has some improvements in terms of still features but not too many to warrant paying the extra for the M5 unless you need it for video.

Hi John did you enjoy you're trip to Japan? I planning to go next year around March. Would $6000 be enough for 2 weeks including flights?

I had an amazing time with my partner. We actually thought about living there. The people were so nice, their culture is rich with history and I loved their food. $6000 is a lot of money. Food is cheap and there are a lot of hotels that are budget friendly. I would recommend getting a JR rail pass.

The lens makes this camera. Great way to get a Zeiss design without shelling out an additional $1,000+ I look at the RX10 the same way. Although you have a non-removable lens, it pulls the best quality out of the Sony 1" sensor. I love mine and find myself using it more and more. I bring my a6000 when I need more flexibility and reach, but am gaining a great deal of trust in what Sony is doing with their RX line of cameras with Zeiss glass...

What speed of SD card is needed for the high-data rate video recording? You said class 10, but there's a wide range of write speeds (45-100mpbs) that are class 10.

***** The 95mbs are the best but if you're going to be filming in the highest quality (XAVCS) then you need to get an SDXC card.

is the camera durable? i have used RX100 M1 before, after one years, screen coating became smudge also len cover not opened propery when turned on... :(

I wouldn't say its durable as in can take drops or anything but if that happened last time, I would apply a screen protector and put it in a case while not in use because one of the reasons why the lens cover may not have opened is because there may have been dust or debris caught inside.

It definitely is! And it's good that you still get the great image quality on it as well! The only. things you are really missing out on is 4K, slow mo and faster autofocus.

bernie dinglasan Hmm well it depends really. If you want the great low light and the flexibility to change your lenses, it would be best to go with the a6000 but if you want something simple and compact, go for the rx100m3.

It's actually RX100-III, or the model name is "DSC-RX100M3" (where M can also be "make"). In no official Sony document I know of it was ever named "mark". People are just so used to the Canon terminology to call it "mark"...

The term 'mark' is standard usage for any product when it gets updated, it's not specific to Canon although they may use it. It's applicable to anything from cars to washing machines.

I only know very few outside cases, where people use "mark", I knew it from the K-9 robot dog in the Doctor Who series, so it doesn't seem to be used often, maybe in your area it is different? Yeah the RX100M3 will be just fine so I wouldn't say you need to get the later models if its for vlogs.

The A6000 is much better in terms of functionality and versatility. With the RX100M3, you're getting a very high quality and well featured point and shoot camera but in terms of quality, the A6000 would be the better option.
