Just bought the M3. Not overly excited to be honest. It's an ok camera but the reviews make it a bigger miracle cam than it is. My Canon S95 delivers RAW files that aren't so much worse than the Sony.

Great comparison. I also am looking at both and I really like the feel of the a6000. Its the right size for my hands but at the end of the day I completely agree that the camera you are willing to carry will always be more important then any other consideration. I know myself and you helped remind me that the rx100m3 is the only one I am likely to carry even when I'm not necessarily going out to shoot. On image quality, I have read enough reviews to know that I will be happy with either. I also own a nikon d300 which I love but the fact is I never use it because I am never willing to carry it.

I wanted to buy a sony rx100iii but the salesman convinced me to buy the a6000, and I am very satisfied. The Kit Lens is not perfect, but it works good enough for portraits and landscapes.

I think for most people the M3 is the best option because of the size. It is so easy to use all the time, which means you also learn how to get the best out of it too.

Just a FYI to anyone looking at the comments, the A6000 got an update so it does indeed do XAVC-S 50Mbit/sec recording, but it’ll do about 19-22 minutes before it’ll overheat and shut off, if you record 4-6 minutes at time you will have no problems and the HD quality is excellent.

Very detailed and informative comparison. I'm currently deciding between the a6000 and the mkII version of the rx100 because of the hot shoe capability that they both have (ex. hot shoe mic or LED light). I'm considering picking up photography as a secondary hobby while living in Europe and there are a lot of castles I plan to visit while living here, but I also wanted something for the occasional vlog. I understand either would be good, but if I plan to grow with it would the a6000 be a better investment?

Hey there, thanks for the awesome and straightforward comparison! I am a point and shoot user with a Canon G16 and was wondering if I should still go for the RX100M3 as it is basically another advanced point and shoot camera. I will only be sticking with the kit lens for both the A6000 and RX100M3, so it's the 16-50mm vs the 24-70mm. Will the Carl Zeiss lens on the RX100 really blow away the A6000 even though the A6000 with the 16-50mm kit lens is really a bigger step forward from my G16 as it is a mirrorless system? It's priced very similarly here as of now and because of that the choice is even harder to make. So TLDR should I get another point and shoot or just move up to mirrorless in this case? The camera will be used for basically everything from travel to daily use and I will also be taking some video from time to time, though not too much to overheat both of the cameras mentioned. Thanks for the comparison and hope to see a good answer :) Oh and size is not a factor for me as both of these are quite compact already :D

Here's my scenario: I like photography a lot, but don't know that much about it. I intend to (baby steps) enter this world and if I'm not that into it, I won't have spent that much money. Thanks you so much for this comparison... It's still going to be a very difficult choice for me because I would like to start dappling into video. If I may add one thing you forgot to mention was the hot shoe on the a6000. When taking video that could make a big difference when it comes to audio at the least. My main frustration lies with this next purchase because it will be geared towards me becoming a "prosumer". I guess I think the a6000 has more flexibility to grow with photo and video but the m3 "does it all" very well and in a form factor that fits in your pocket... Is this accurate?

nice review as always - thanks. I am still holding back on getting the RX100m3 until I see what the Panasonic LX8 will be like - supposedly with the same sensor and longer focal range and a fast lens and touch lcd and touch to focus and shoot - it also is to have a viewfinder - but I was somewhat disappointed that focal length is shorter now - but of course faster lens and now 24mm - so give and take I suppose - no one can argue the great small size - A6000 is an improvement from my NEX5n and NEX7 :) especially with the new menu system and yes mode dial - and of course faster focus and better in low light - I still find more fun to use my Panasonic GX7 and my Olympus OMD-em1 - so have not jumped on getting the A6000 - just really really miss not having Touch LCD and Touch to Focus and Shoot - and the A6000 still has less Fn buttons and no C1 C2 C3 for quick access to saved settings - also I find it a bit cumbersome to get into the APPS - takes a bit to load etc - so to be the A6000 still needs improvements - but no question of IQ and much faster focus now - the other killer is there is still no 24-70mm F2.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 in Emount - still lack of lenses - M43 just has a killer line of lenses - So my NEX5n and NEX7 collect dust now - but I have some Emount glass so still hoping for fast zooms - not just F4 which seems to be the only thing Sony is producing now - So hopefully the A7000 will have some of the nice features and layout as the OMD-Em1 and GX7 have and more lenses soon

question on the M3 - you mentioned Back-lit - indicating that there is light coming from the back - my understanding is that all that means is that some of the electronics that are typically in the front have been moved to the back - which can help in not blocking light - but in actually there is not light coming from the back - am I understanding this right ? and in reality only improving things about 5-10% - and not under all circumstances

I have the first RX100 and I still love it but damn, the MKIII seems to rock the market *again* :) Oh and waiting my a6000 + Sigma 60mm F2.8 by the way, was needing something like this to not carry my (not too big but..) Great review! I've seen a couple of your reviews, now... subscribed! I wish I had seen this before I purchased the A6000. What really blew me away was that the M3 records in XAVCs. I think, because of the interchangeable lens and other features, the A6000 is still the right purchase for me... but video was definitely an important feature to me. Not thrilled about AVCHD. Do you think there's any chance, via firmware, that Sony would (or even could) make XAVCs available for the A6000?

I've had an A6000 for years and have loved it, but it's a little awkward taking everywhere with me so for Christmas I got the RX100 III. Both are amazing and I've been very impressed with the M3. Can you suggest a better all purpose lens than the kit one for the A6000? I have a telephoto one along with the kit lens, but if I'm going somewhere where I can't swap out lenses what would be a good one?

I'm trying to decide between a Sony RX100 iii, Nex 6 (now 499$ with kit lens) and the new a6000 (which may not justify the price hike now that the Nex6 is heavily discounted). Pocketability is quite a concern, but also not having a telephoto option seems to be quite a downside (ie I can buy the Nex6+ Sony's 200mm telephoto lens for the price of a RX100 mark iii). Is photo quality almost negligible between the two cameras (with standard kit lenses)?

I bought a NEX-6 ($679.99 at the time here in Toronto) and an RX100 at the same time. Though the RX100 Mark 3 may perform a little better in low light, etc.than mine, I'll bet there's not much difference, plus some forums, and customer reviews claim the first one displays sharper images! It also has longer focal length. Anyway, I can't say for sure, not having owned an RX100 3. However, between my RX100 and the NEX-6, I made several indoor and outdoor still image and video tests between both cameras at the same settings and lens focal lengths. The results? The video was a little sharper from the NEX-6, and still images about the same. I returned the NEX-6 though, simply because I liked how small and compact the RX100 was. However, if I could go back in time, I'd probably opt for the NEX-6 because the tilted screen was VERY handy for above head and ground level shooting/filming, as well as long hand-held video and still shooting, and the electronic viewfinder is excellent, among other things! So, (except for the more compact size), if the end results are very similar between the RX100 III and an NEX-6 as well as possibly the a6000, then for a huge difference in price, I'd grab the NEX-6, and extra lens FOR SURE!

JoeSzilagy In some ways the a6000 is a downgrade. It doesn't have the auto-leveling meter features like the RX100 m3, and has less resolutions in the EVF. Also both models screens don't tilt.

Try exposure bracketing- it can be set up automatically in the M3. If you don't want to do this, then use DRO mode.

Also I found the RX100 for half the price and its more picket friendly. Anyone have both or experience photographing kids with either of these.

The a6000 has the same sensor size but more still megapixels. The camera itself can deliver higher bit rate than canon but the quality of video to raw eye will look pretty much the same. The thing that makes it better than the 650D is the auto focus and 1080/60fps video (yeah the one that canon just doesn't put in their cameras even though everyone else does)

Zoom : Don't, Sony E Zooms cant be affordable and good at the same time. Street/general : Sigma 30mm f2.8 Portrait/short tele : Sony 50mm f1.8 The sigma is sharper but the sony while narrower is faster and has OSS.

Im thinking about getting the M3. But what if you want a slightly wider angle? Right now I use a Panasonic DMC-FZ48. I'd like to upgrade and make greater landschape shots. We will be visiting Argentina soon and going up the mountains. Anyone got some tips??

Happy to hear you found something that suited you better. The LX7 is nice little kit. On the other hand, Panasonic wouldn't be buying Sony's 1' sensor for many of their flagship offerings if they had a better solution. I will be reviewing some panny cameras this year.

Yes nice voice....can you whisper sweet nothings in my ear? :) I own the RX100M3 and a great little camera and picked one up new for $350 since I work at Best Buy part time so not SO bad. I love the files that come out of this little potent camera, but the rear lcd color is really weak in my opinion say compared to a Canon G16. The macro mode on it stinks too really compared to say a G16 which I love. Ideally the Sony image quality was in the G16 body. And the a6000 is a robust little camera...still don't own one, but do own a D4S so use that for my go to speed camera. Sony makes a great product...nice review.

so is the autofocus of a6000 faster than the a77ii dslr? if so, wouldn't it be better to just get the a6000 due to the physical size since both have same size sensors. also, i read somewhere that the emount lenses will fit on the a77ii without an adapter needed.

The RX100 will be slightly lower in image quality but makes up for it in being a very good Jack of all Trades, Master of None. I suppose the best thing you need to ask yourself is, what do you want from a camera.

These cameras honestly changed my opinion on Sony as a dying company. I mean financially they're in trouble but it's not stopping them from making good products like this. Their dslrs do suck though compared to Canon and Nikon lol. Portability has never weighed into the argument as much as it ever has before and I'd attribute that largely to the advent of smartphones with their integrated cameras.

Here's the RX100M3 head-to-head with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: vimeo.com/98559724 I think the difference in video quality between the a6000 and the RX100M3 is more than just the lens and bitrate. I downloaded all the untouched a6000 samples I could find and I tried to be impressed but it just doesn't quite deliver true 1080p clarity. Then I looked at RX100M3 clips and I was floored. There's something going on, I suspect with the sampling, that really puts it a tier above the a6000.

Dear DD I bought a superzoom Hx200v years ago and yet it has a small sensor but SONY's BIONZ chip plus both thier codex & YES THEY DID NOT use their GREAT GREAT G seriesGlass from their HD CAMCORDER FOUNDRY but they sensibly Upgraded their offering to one of the deals of the Best deals around by creating a marriage that seems to work with SONY matching their class leading Ability with Small lCmos Sensors & their version of steady shot they put this with a guaranteed BIG NAME in the BUSINESS of what PHOTONS Must go through to Meet OUR PHOTOSITES of our CAMERAS Z E I S S is really the Only part of the Full name one needs to know by SONY making QUALITY SUPER ZOOM BRIDGE cameras my ones 3ox Mag & 18 mp's Sorry you'l won't agree as your a Pro & i'm just a snapper but my old NEX 5 don't even comes close even with it's APSC EXMOR 14 mp SENSOR nope my Zeiss Bridge is amazing infact I can't remember who said it one of the millions on KZbin but this videographer was testing out the wonderful HX9v and he said camera people get far too caught up in sensor size much important than that is the quality of the Glass one is shooting through.I wonder do you agree as his argument was that sensors are getting better ALL the time quality Glass is more important saying that surely as you were wishing for greater reach with the RX review maybe the ONE OF SONYS UBER SUPERZOOMS BRIDGES certainly now SONY has invented the New BETTER DIGITAL ZOOM which NO LONGER does one get ready to SPIT ON THE GROUND when the wordDIGITAL is slammed infront of the word ZOOM now that SONY has inventedCLEAR VISION [V I E W ] ZOOM now we can ALL admit we used a DIGITAL ZOOM to EEK! MORE REACH OUT OF OUR ZEISS SUPERZOOM what I am trying to say if your wants are Not here yet is it NOT WORTH to evailulate the SUPER Z's ? .Because you might have two years to wait when either you or infact your viewers might just might be happy with a review of SONY's SZ Bridges which have that beautiful ZEISS BADGE BY REVIEWING aBRIDGE YOU MIGHT GIVE PUNTERS WHAT THEY ARE WANTING & WAITING FOR NOW!!!!.To be brutally Honest with youDD iv'e just bought myself after saving two birthday monies up I bought myself what was gonna be a great Nikon D5300 ive just bought myself aSONY A6000 I just hope I made the right decision as /////i am Paralysed left side I can't use the right side of the camera and learning the onoff bit is not a zoom function i am a tad gutted about that but there you go at least i have beautiful 24 mega pixels.
