Hello, I have a Sony EVS700U. EVS900 which could be used as a digital audio recorder and playback machine with 6 * four two track stereo hours of digital audio recording with a total of 24 hours of digital audio per cassette. The whole width of the tape was taken over to PCM audio stereo recording. I used to re one PCM Layer to Rock one for Country one for Heavy Metal etc. Fantastic machines which I have serviced and still working though I have purchased one extra of each for parts if needed. Sony in the 80/90s brought out one innovative tech but lost their way unfortunately a little like Apple with Steve Jobs. I look back with fondness when I listened to the machine of my youth. Just Brilliant!

I had a client give me one of these EVS-7000 decks a while back, one of those clients that has tons of money to buy expensive crap and then never use it, he was going to throw it out if I didn't want it. He also gave me his CCD-VX3 and EVW-300 that he'd bought new. The deck has about 10 hours on it and still works flawlessly to this day. The majority of these (and similar) decks I see all have that problem though. I've had to fix numerous decks with the busted gear. I had a similar problem on an SLV-R1000 where the blue gear that moves the loading arm (right one I believe?) was busted in half. To borrow a phrase, "it's often a simple problem that brings a complex machine to its knees."
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 7 жыл бұрын
The blue loading gear was as big a problem as the take up hub on the hi-8. Actually a bigger problem because Sony sold many times more VHS than the hi-8 decks. Funny, I also used a VX3 and EVW300 back in the mid 90's. Then I upgraded to a DCR-VX1000 and a JVC GYDV500 around 99/00 and then to a HDR FX1, and HDR HC3 in 2004, and by the end of 2006 I pulled the plug on the wedding video business, and concentrated on just corporate stuff for another few years hanging up my tripod from the commercial side of things around 2010. Now I shoot using FDR-AX33 and FDR-AX100 just for the channel mostly. They were fun times doing big productions, but I don't miss that work at all. I am glad I am out. I enjoy doing the ultralapse, and time lapse videos, and making the repair videos. It is a steady income stream, and even though I don't make enough to do this full time, I do make enough from the advertising revenue to keep me motivated to make more videos, and get more stuff to tear down, and work on.

Beautiful looking machine, but completely agree with you the thinking behind the tape transport and Not making replacement parts to keep these machines in operation was without thought for those whom loved the machines so difficult now to source parts for even the low end machines now, Thank you so much indeed for your great ability to keep these going and your guidance to us to maintain our machines thank you 📼⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I purchased several EV-S7000 and EV-S3000 decks which are similar with PCM audio and also did the same reel repair shown in this video. As far as other repairs today, I have been using doctorsony on ebay about 7 times so far and he does a good job on all Hi8 decks. He's a former Sony master tech and knows his stuff. It gets costly when you pay round trip shipping unless you live in Levittown, Pennsylvania, but if this guy stops doing this service, I don't know who else to trust to do it right. He favors the older EV-S3000 which is great if you love the wood panels. I don't care for time code since today all you want is good playback to your PC or DVD recorder. The only useful feature the 3000 lacks is the voice boost on the newer EV-S7000 / 5000 / 2000 / EV-C100. If you need PCM audio, only the 3000/7000 have that aside from the pro decks. So here is doctorsony's ad in case you have a Hi8 unit you want repaired right: www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-EV-S3000-8mm-Hi8-PCM-Stereo-HiFi-Editing-VCR-RARE-90-Days-Warranty/192410132196?var=null#viTabs_0

I also loved editing using the EV-S7000 and used two of them since I didn't wat to use camcorder as the player, as Sony suggests. I wanted this deck to be the player due to having TBC and DNR playback enhancements. Anyways, regarding the issue with the reel cracking, I learned from a Sony master tech that the tape mechanism on EV-S5000/EV-S7000 is made by Memorex, unlike the EV-S3000, EV-C100, which are Sony's design just like the popular Hi8 camcorders as that time. So it looks as though Sony's tape mechanism got too costly (as I still have the older EC-S3000 and EV-C100 working without issues) so they cheapened it for the EV-S5000/EV-S7000. MSRP was $2099 (according to 1995 Sony Style magazine) for EV-S7000 which is about $3300 in today's dollars for a nice machine that eats your precious tapes.

40:40 No the PCM sound quality is quite limited. It's non-linear 8 bits (10 bit equivalent). If you overloaded it even a little bit, it sounded dreadful. See my video on the PAL version EV-S9000E around the 4;45 minutes point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIqmnGeljNFod5Y I'm assuming of course that the PAL and NTSC ones have the same bit depth. We've spoken before about those infernal reel tables. They were expensive when they were available, and no longer are at any price. Also these machines can suffer from mass capacitor failure of course, and a very common problem is failure of SM capacitors in the TBC circuit, though that can be switched out on the menus. I've done a number or KZbin videos about these machines, I think you've seen some of those.

paymydues yes the infamous broken guide pins on the early sl2000 2500 and 2700 which were the first of the 711 chassis were terrible. Then the blue gear that breaks on all the vhs machines. They had lots of plastic gear failures. we used to joke Sony meant "soon only not yet" and the ES audio gear stood for expensive sh__! looking back most of that ES gear was great but their vcrs and home cameras were not that reliable, and they had flyback troubles on their TV and bad hv bleeder resistor troubles.

To reduce the chance of the new hub fracturing, why not reduce the outside circumference if the magnetic disk? That way it will not push on the plastic. I have seen from later posts that the disk cannot be removed. In that case, just drill a channel inside the outer edge of the disk and then remove the resulting thin strip.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
The disk isn't magnetic. The magnet is above-mentioned the disk. The disk is steel. It also needs to turn. The magnet is what provides the tape tension regulation.

When you FF or REW on that machine the sound sounds like tuning a radio. That's a pretty cool mod. Too bad you couldn't mod this machine so when you rewind or fast forward, the voices on the tape get all chipmunky like on an audio tape.

On analog VTRs that I have modded, the audio from the linear track does change pitch. On 8mm and Hi-8 the audio is recorded by the spinning video head, so the speed of the head, and therefore the pitch stays the same.

They all crack. Just bad parts. Last time I was able to get parts I ordered 2. I did check the spare when it arrived, and by the time I needed it I opened the box and it too cracked. Thermal expansion of the metal disk under the plastic rim. It had been stored in my storage unit that is heated in winter, but only to 5' C to prevent freezing. In the summer it gets upwards of 30'C and just the temperature fluctuations caused the new part to fail in the box. Very bad design.

But my question is do you know if the Hi-8 transports in the Tascam DA-38's, 88's, 98's, etc are Sony manufactured? Another question do you know any one who does repair work on these machines? Just as an FYI the take up gear on my EV-S2000 is black while the feed side is white. Sony returned the parts they replaced to me (in year 2000) and the gear was not one of them. So I'm assuming both gears are original. Also, they appear to be in good shape. i.e.no visible cracks. The transport in the Tascam DA-98 that is having "tension" problems looks more robust than the one in the EV-S2000. It does not have a lot of hours logged, but has problems anyway. The other 98 that I currently have, which has a lot more hours on it, works just fine.

So are the magnets actually different in the supply reel, or are they just firther apart for a weaker drive? I was thinking if it was the magnet strength, use freezer spray to shrink the magnet so to push it out and swap over. There has to be a way to fix them, its a shame that such a clever machine cant be fully repaired :-(. Shame about the cat :-(, but they dont last as long as us, but it had lots of love so thats all that mattered.

Why not to wind a thin thread (10-15 tight winds) over the take-up hub just above the teeth and then soak the thread by cyanoacrilat glue? It could be a permanent solution.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that the gear that cracks is just a "tire" on a thin metal disk. The top part of the hub has a magnet that is attracted to this metal "wheel" that the plastic gear is fused to. This is how they regulate torque. The gear is free to spin and the tape hub speed is regulated by how fast the tape is being fed in front the pinch roller / capstan. It regulates the tension, so you can just build something up on it that will bind with the actual hub. You can't 3d print it either and I really am getting tired of all the "experts" that have never seen one of these machines never mind repaired them chiming in with ideas that if they actually knew how it worked would know that you cant just 3d print it. The only solution I have found is to fuse the plastic back together since the parts are no longer available.

NO it isn't, and I am quite pissed off about this. It is a track from musicbakery.com called Action Thriller. musicbakery.com/release/action-thriller/ This is not the only track that Rick has lifted from musicbakery, and stuck some lyrics to. Jack Waldenmeier is the composer, and the track was released on the April 2000 CD. My old production company spent thousands licensing those tracks for video production use, and I get pissed every time I get a copyright claim by someone else that claims that it is their music. Believe me if I had a dollar for every dispute I have to file with youtube. Jack is a master composer, and so many others have used his music for their own projects and then copyrighted their versions. Go take a listen to the original. Another one that Rick used was "Mysterious Stranger" from musicbakery. Go look up Rick's track "slip off the line" Same music, with words. Frustrating. He isn't the only one. Francia Jazzline Orchestra has stolen dozens of tracks from Musicbakery.

The video walkman units (digital 8) used the same mechanism as camcorder, however due to the tight tape wrap they are hard on tapes, and do not wind very fast. This design with it's gentle and very wide threading pattern is supposed to be easier on tapes, which is important because during editing there is often much winding and rewinding so a gentle tape path will mean less chance of tape damage. Considering that Hi-8 was an acquisition format, protecting the camera original is of utmost importance. In a pro or semi pro environment the camera is used to record the tape, and then it is removed without rewinding, and all further transport is done on editors, so these machines had unique transports that were of very high quality. The problem was bad reel tables. The rest of the deck is fantastic. Believe me if I could find some spares, or have a few made, I would do it.

if you have a 3D Printer you might be able to print out a new part or if you know someone who has a 3D Printer they might print out a new part for you from fibre glass rich printer stock if you ask them and any way it might be a two print head job if you are going to print the magnetic insert at the same time as printing the gear wheel, any of you guys out there how do you get a Hi8 tape out of the machine with any battery left as I appear to be in deep shit as there is a tape fully laced and I don't think that I can get it out without powering it up and blowing up some of the electronics in my Cannon camera, update got the tape out by not fitting the battery but I think that the tape is probably knackered i.e. creased.

No a two nozzle 3D printer can do it all in one fail swoop it is just like printing a supporting layer but in this case you are printing a material with iron fileings in the printing material which comes on a roll and I don't see why it should not be possible if you can get a the G code to allow the creation of this part, by the way why not reach out the Ex Microsoft Employee who has a you tube channel called Barnaclease Nergasm as he has such a printer unless he has given it away.

eddy apple 8mm and Hi8 was a very popular camcorder format not generally used for recording tv however it could and do it very well. It had 2 separate stereo sound tracks an afm hifi track and a pcm digital track that could be dubbed and also featured time code for frame accurate editing. This machine was 3000.00 which is probably why you never heard of it. The camera I had that went with this machine was 12,000.00. Professionals know all about these decks though as they were quite useful heavily used in broadcast operations for news gathering by smaller stations. Not quite to beta am quality but close enough at a fraction of the cost.

you should teach a class dude for real. Yeah 3000 dollar price would more so explain it I'm the only one in my family that seems to understand why pay so much for a product when there are cheaper ways to do the same thing. Those people would never pay anywhere close to that even for professional stuff. lol hey i got a toshiba sa-775 keeps killing the same resistor when i turn it on the resistor will turn red hot and burn out but it doesn't blow a fuse. do you think a dead cap would cause that? i don't have an esr meter yet also way i see it i might as well replace them all if it is which basicaly turns it into a parts machine.

When I worked in the business back in the 80-90 and early 2000's the minimum wage was 3.25 an hour. I started at about 10 when I worked for Sony in 83. I quickly made it up to about 30.00 an hour, which was considered a relatively high wage, because the average at the time was in the 18 an hour range. Average wage in Canada back in the early 90s, 37,000 a year, I was making 60+. It didn't last though, by 2003 wages were falling, and I bailed and never looked back. I don't make much doing actual repairs these days. I make more from the youtube advertising than from the actual repair. Some of these things take hours to fix too. When you get something as complex as a plasma TV and trouble shoot down to component level to fix it. Lots of skill required, and no apprecietion.

The 80's and 90's there was tons of money in consumer electronics repairs. Back when the average wage was 25,000 a year I was making 60K and did that pretty much every year from about 86 to 2001 then the industry turned around, and I could see the writing om the wall, and was out by 03. I got back in more as a hobby around 2012 and am quite selective on what paid jobs I accept. Most of the stuff I tinker with here in mine. People give me old things, and I fix them, and then give them away, or if they have any value try to sell them for a few $. I make enough from advertising to make it worth while, but not as much as I used to thanks to advertisers shying away from youtube due to some channels doing offensive content. Advertisers are shying away from youtube in general and moving to other platforms because of certain youtubers according to a report I heard on the radio today. That would explain falling revenues.

3D print one!
@jimreardon6599

That won't work as the plastic is moulded around a very thin metal ring and the clearance is very tight. There is also a hall effect sensor under the table to detect the changing magnetic field on the magnet on the top side. I have a 3D printer, and 3D scanner, and have tried to make one of these already for a client and had no success whatsoever. If the entire hub was plastic then that would definitely be a possibility, but in multiple attempts I was never able to make one of these work. If anyone else has had success I would be more than willing to get one made for my evs5000.

Would it be possible to use the original metal magnetic ring from the cracked gear, and 3D print the base of the new gear up until where the metal ring would go, place the metal ring where it goes on the in-progress gear and perhaps tack it in place with a drop of super glue simply to hold it steady, and then 3D print the remainder of the gear around and on top of the disc so you would meet the tight tolerance by essentially embedding it and building atop it?

I think that with a two nozzle 3D printer might be able to print out such a gear wheel I.E. metallic particles in the feed wire.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 7 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I don't have any experience in 3d printing myself, but the only way I can see this working would be to split the broken gear, remove the outer gear ring, and get that printed, and then fit the hub into it and glue it in place. That is the only way I can see that working. I should take the gear into the shop that has a 3d printer and see if they could do that. The one on the evs5000 is broken anyway, so nothing to loose and everything to gain if it would work.
