Sony FDR-AX53 4K camcorder: unboxing

David, thanks for all your reviews and tests on aspects of the AX53. It was really useful in helping me decide to buy one of these great little camcorders to replace my old one. There are other video reviews of the AX53 on KZbin, but I found that yours was the best at answering my questions on using the camera. I'm looking forward to getting to grips with it and may even point it at the occasional narrow boat!

+Buse ve Anne TV The CX 900 has a bigger sensor than the AX 53 which means it can capture more light and a sharper image cheaper models which have smaller sensors.

Be aware that a bigger sensor doesn't automatically mean capturing more light, because if a sensor crop is used, the light per pixel can be less.

UKAirscape But is that camcorder better with that bigger sensor than the cheaper models that cost $400 and a sensor size of 1/4.85 vs. 1 inch on that Sony camcorder?

I have been using the previous model for about a year now and love it. I saw that you had the new model and am really interested how it performs. Like you, I really like the USB lead that plugs into the strap on the old model so it is a shame that has gone. The increased resolution sounds interesting, but is there really that much difference to the viewer between 50 fps and 100 fps? I don't know so interested to see the results. Sony just keeps adding to that amazing steady shot technology and like you I film in less than optimal terrain so the AX33 has been a gem in my book. I was a little concerned with your comments on build quality. I have never dropped mine and treat it withe same respect as if it cost £10K but I am often filming on my allotment so there are stones, hard soil, grass and all manner of things it could strike. What resolution does this one shoot at 4K? The previous one had a kind of intro 4K fps rate so I am wondering if this is the full fat version? As my videos are on youtube, I have to say that 4K seems to be too big for most people's bandwidth to cope with so I still shoot at 1080 at 50 fps. The quality is amazing so I have no complaints. You really helped me last year to make my mind up about the camera to buy so I also wanted to say thank you for that. I am looking forward to the follow up video showing this one at work. The point about the 100fps (not increased resolution, increased frame rate) is not to be "better than 50". It's so that you can shoot slow motion. You shoot at 100 and play back at a conventional 25 so it's 4x slowmo. Not sure what you mean by "intro 4K"; this and the AX33 shoot 25 (30 for NTSC countries) 100Mbps 4K. I'm not entirely sure - from some very limited tests admittedly - whether the new Active Intelligent steadyshot mode is much better but I need to play with it more. And yes, I don't advise dropping cameras. Once it got blown by an unexpected gust of wind that took the tripod down, once I was wired to the cam by a tieclip mic and forgot so as I walked off it pulled it. :-(

Hi, I remember your channel from the times you reviewed Canon Legria and it seemed you had extensive experince with it. Would you recommend this AX53 over new Legria G40 or not?

Depends. If you need 4K and superb stabilisation, get the AX. I have not used the G40 but it likely has better manual controls so if you need that and not 4K, get that.

No. I reviewed the HD version, the CX900, but didn't like it much and sent it back for refund.

Hi i did notice the red colour seems orange-ish even after manual white balance was done. Does your ax53 have this issue?

Not that I've noticed but my eyes aren't what they used to be and I'm currently editing on a standard laptop so the screen can't really be trusted either!

I'm interested in this camera for my vlogging channel. How would you rate this camera in a situation where I point it at my face frequently in addition to other events I'm passing?

I use it for all my vlogs, as long as there's decent light on your face then the autofocus will see it and lock on. Like most autofocuses, it's poor in dim conditions.

Sony FDR-AX53 or FDR-AXP35 which would be better choice ?

The '53 is the newer model and is much improved over the prior generation '35. Be aware that the "P" versions have a projector in the LCD screen though so if that is important to you, you need that version.

Hi. If you go out shooting wildlife, mountain scenery or spying the girls in bikini on the beach but are not near your home, the p35 is the cam for you. It has a projector that displays you video on a white background, e.g. a motel room white wall, so that you don't have to carry TV cables or need a TV, etc., or you are camping and wish to see the video on the spot by erecting a white linen sheet on two vertical poles, sticks or tree branches. Its convenient. But if you can wait till you get home and plug it on your (smart) TV by cable or wireless, that's okay, the AX53 is a better choice and cheaper too.

As of June 2016 the AX53 is still unavailable in the UK, even Sony cant tell us when it will be available. UKirspace must be testing the NTSC format model.
