Ok, you're the best guy for details and explaining relevant points without being a camera expert douche like the other big subscriber folks. Thats a complement. Anyway, I am so much struggling... I have a A7RIII along with a 24-105 and a few primes from my A7RII. I am off to Everest Base Camp trek and really trying to keep weight down since I have to carry it for lots of vertical miles along the 17 day hard trek. I want a wide lens and wish Sony had a super wide prime, but that's not important. What would you do about a wide lens if you were me? I do care about quality, weather situations and getting a very good image -- 16-35 f4? 16-35 F2.8? 12-24? Other or none since I have a 24 already?
@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
Hello, I would totally go for the FE 16-35mm f/4 Lens (bhpho.to/2Fb8Ysg) all day long ;) Especially for the weight savings requirements on such a journey. The optics are killer on that lens and I don't think you will ever need wider than 16mm on the full frame camera. Be safe friend, I hear it's a daunting hike to say the least...

Thanks for this review. Did you know you can use the Sony APS-C 10-18mm f4 lens on the Full-frame Sony cameras. If you use it between 12mm and 16mm (without the lens hood on) there is NO vignetting on the full frame image, really. It costs less than half the price of the 12-24mm f4. And you can use 62mm filters on it. It also has OSS. I and many other pros know this "secret" and make good use of it. I use it with both my A7RIII and my A6500, and I will use it with my ordered A7III. Cheers
@suranyigabor31935 жыл бұрын
Yeah :D If you are a so-called pro than you'd know that 12 mm on an APS-C lens is 18 mm on a FF camera :) So you get nowhere near the 12mm-s which perspective is the lenses selling point if it would be an 18-24 no one would buy it :) They'd get a 16-35 instead. And both sony 16-35-s are great, but they cant provide 12mm-s. So yes, you could use it, but it is a completely different thing, even if you open it up to 10mm-s you'd only get the 15mm equivalent of a FF lens. Cheerios :)
@AndyMoulton5 жыл бұрын
@@suranyigabor3193 I think you're mistaken. I just tested this lens on both my old APS-C body camera and FF A7iii (without cropping turned on). What you get is a photo taken at 10mm on the APS-C camera creates the same image as a photo taken using the same lens on the FF camera set to around 15mm. It's not that 12mm with this lens on a FF sensor = 18mm, it's that 12mm on an APS-C sensor = 18mm with the same lens on a FF sensor. I've found the range of the SEL1018 with the A7iii is around 13-16mm without much vignetting. That's 13-16 full frame mm.

The background out of focus tree limbs when you are on the deck (12:21) appear to show wicked CA (all the limbs look blue). Could you confirm? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm definitely seeing the blue back there in that particular frame.

@camerawalker The only thing that prevents me from buying this lens is that its front lens cap can be bought as extra. Sony doesn't sell the front cap as accessory neither third party manufacturers. I have checked it. Also the front element of the lens doesn't accept protective filters. So I will live with the fear of loosing the front lens cap. I hope Sony listens.
@Taylorkaraoke6 жыл бұрын
the thing is that due to the shape the front element of this lens, the glass protrudes too far, due to the nature of the lens off course, same goes for the cap, you can't clip ip inside. it's kind of a common thing with ultra wide angle lens. however it's kind of silly they don't provide a front cap included in the package, considering the price of this baby...

Really great review, thanks for the level of detail esp the vignette examples. Just moved from Canon to Sony A7R2 and looking to change over lenses. Currently trading off between the 12-24mm and 16-35mm. Advice?

excellent EXCELLENT review! im very intrigued by this lens. if i bought it id use it on my A7III / A7sII but specifically for VIDEO. i have the 1DXmkII with the 11-24mm which is pretty stunning still...on a single handle gimbal (Crane 2 & Ronin S) the canon package gets heavy quick. i was taken back by how much this lens "vignettes". in photos its and easy fix but in video...? Davinici Resolve could fix it but to have to go there all the time could be an annoyance. if you stop down to 5.6 or 8.0 does the vignetting settle down much? the sharpness looks great and i like the lens does not go in and out when zooming which keeps balance on a gimbal better. so much to like about this lens but oh boy...that vignetting is giving me pause? thanks again for a full court effort on this review.

Thank you for the review. I was shocked to discover elsewhere that there is no rear gasket seal. Even though it is described as 'dust & moisture resistant'. Why would they miss that? What's your view on that?
@Jason_Hermann5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Yeah, a lot of lenses do not have that seal and still say they are dust and moisture resistant. I guess they just mean dust will have a hard time finding its way inside the lens itself.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a function in lightroom or photoshop that would fix the fisheye/wide angle distortions?
@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I showed you the lens correction option in Lightroom during the video. You can also do that manually and push the sliders further than the auto lens correction does.

The fact that it makes the ball look like an egg, really puts me off. Is there a way to correct that so it looks like it should?
@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
Not really. You just need to frame your shots so it does not have objects like this in the edge areas... The stretching effect is way more noticeable on an object like a ball, which is why I showed it. Regular subjects like landscapes will not look near as distorted...
