I need an answer: will this do well filming high school football video at night (stadium lights) on the FX3? Can I use 800 or 12800 in Cone EI mode without grain?
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not sure, because that specific use case I would need to test. This lens does not have the fastest aperture, so you would need to use ISO 12800 for sure I would think. Assuming the exposure is on the money you should not have much grain. However if it's under exposed then it will certainly look grainy.

I have watched so many reviews trying to decide on which Sony telephoto lens but after watching this I will buy the 70-300 . Thank you.
@robertsherrow36278 жыл бұрын
Great review as usual Jay. I purchased this lens a month ago with the goal of replacing my FE 70-200mm G OSS for the longer reach. After a couple days of field comparisons with my a7rii I felt that the 70-300 was equal to the 70-200 in general use, but exceeded the latter in zoom macro applications. Yes, I wish the new lens was at least a constant f/4 as the predecessor, but feel the extra 100mm reach is worth the trade off. I also prefer the collar-less and shorter barrel of the 70-300 over the longer 70-200. I find it much easier to carry with a Peak Design Slide shoulder rig and with a Really Right Stuff L-bracket on my a7rii , the new lens is quite stable on a tripod without a collar. The build quality is spectacular as you note, and comparable to the 70-200mm G in that respect. I've read a couple reviews that complain about extreme softness in the corners, but like you, I have not seen this and very pleased with the cross-frame IQ. I was most surprised with the pleasant bokeh in my images and had not expected this quality in a telephoto zoom. Generally I find this new entry quite worthy of joining my collection of Sony and Zeiss lenses and appreciate your timely "real world" review. Thanks!
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Robert for the detailed comments and sharing your real world experience as well. I'm glad you have found the results to be as god as I thought they were as well. The bokeh was especially pleasant as you said and I did not expect that level of quality. Intersting points about the shorter lens barrel and the lack of tri-pod collar, and it makes perfect sense as you explained it for your needs! A great lens for sure in my opinion, and would be very happy to add it my collection as well.... Thanks again!

+Hamza Benarafa Yes, I thought so given the side by side evaluations I did. I shot images on both lenses at 70mm and 200mm and found them equal in performance with the 70mm-300mm having superior sharpness with macro zoom images such as flowers, etc. I was so convinced, I sold my 70-200mm G on eBay , if that gives you any indication. Hope that helps! Robert

I'm wondering that there is no tripod Lens connector ring? The lens is heavier than FE70200f4 and the lens expanded for 300mm...how should it work on a tripod? Maybe you will damage the camera body...or the lens will be so sensitive because the fix point is not balanced...
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
The camera body is strong enough to support the lens on a tri-pod with little issue. I would not bounce the tri-pod around, but the lens and even my older A7r was able to handle the weight easily. It wasn't flexing or anything like that even at 300mm. It is sensitive to vibration though for sure. A self timer or cable re-lease would be highly recommended with slower shutter speeds. A lens collar would be a nice option to have though in any case. Helps with vibration and clearly takes the load off the camera body as you were saying. Thanks for the excellent question/ comments, Jay
@DrDuu8 жыл бұрын
+Jay SonyAlphaLab thanks for your answer. But keep in mind that you can the lens for all e-Mount bodies like the old NEX Generation. I asked the German Sony Support...they were also suprised and had no answer...
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am aware you can use them on all camera bodies and you must use caution on the non full frame camera bodies for sure! I was using the older A7r though and it was pretty darn solid on the tri-pod. On an older Nex-5 or something I would be very careful though for sure, because the body is not as strong as the full frame e-mount cameras in particular as you are saying. Great points and worth noting for sure! Thanks again, Jay
@robertsherrow36278 жыл бұрын
Good question from DrDuu regarding the weight of this lens on a tripod. I have the 70-300mm G lens and use it on my Sony a7rii with a Really Right Stuff L-bracket and it is very secure on a tripod without a collar. I believe it would also be okay without the bracket, since the a7rii has a magnesium alloy body. I would be concerned using this lens on a Sony a6300 and especially the all plastic a6000 without an L-bracket due to the smaller size. However, the shorter barrel of the 70-300mm over the 70-200 G makes it a much friendlier walking lens off the tripod. Just my thoughts. Good luck!

How would this lens work for football photos - while they will be mostly at night the stadiums are fully lighted.
@Jason_Hermann5 жыл бұрын
It will work very well in my opinion with the A7 III or A9 for example, because they have the latest and greatest auto focus technology and are both great in low light. This lens is a little slower on the telephoto end, so you will be pushing some high ISO numbers in order to freeze the action with fast shutter speeds. If the stadium lighting is very good then you should really have great success. Otherwise you are looking at the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM Lens, which is very expensive, but significantly better for the lower light situations.

Which one better for out and indoor lens FE 70-200 F4 or FE 70-300 F4.5 ? and why? still reconsidering hehe
@Jason_Hermann7 жыл бұрын
Great question! The FE 70-200mm f/4 lens would be better for low light indoor photography over the FE 70-300mm Lens. The reason is, the f/4 aperture is faster and constant throughout the entire 70-200mm range. The FE 70-300mm lens has a variable aperture meaning it's f/4.5 at 70mm and f/5.6 at 300mm. So, you do get more range with the 70-300mm lens, but it's "slower" aperture wise, which means it's not as good in low light. Also, the 70-200mm Lens has dual focus motors built in, which makes it significantly faster at focusing for sports shooting in particular if that is what you are planing to do. Both lenses are excellent as far as I'm concerned, but they are different. I hope that helps? Jay

I think it's the more Pro style lens body and all internal zooming etc.. It has a lens collar as well, but I agree it should be a little cheaper based on this lenses performance and build quality. The 70-200mm also has dual linear focus motors as apposed to one I believe based of my memory, making it faster for long focus throw situations. Therefore, the FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens would arguable be better for hard core sports photography based on those few factors I would think ;)

Hi I looking to buy a telephoto for the Sony A7 II , which one would you recommend? Sony 70-200mm G, sony fe 70-300mm or the tamron 70-300 with the La-ea4 adapter?
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your specific needs and, If money was not object, then I would recommend this lens as my #1 choice. Next would be the 70-200mm f/4 due to the constant aperture and really awesome focusing abilities plus pro build quality. The Tamron is also an excellent option and the LA-EA3 lens adapter will also work really well without the loss of light due to the translucent mirror. It won't really perform for sports that great, but everything else will work pretty awesome! I hope that helps, Jay

+Jay SonyAlphaLab I wish to get a telephoto because I have the Sony 16-35 f4 and 55mm 1.8 . the telephoto will be for landscape and portrait. what do you think about the picture quality difference between the sony 70-300 and 70-200? because so far there's no videos on KZbin that is comparing this two lenses (within the same price range)
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
I think the picture quality is very similar if not better on the 70-300mm believe it or not. Not everyone will agree with that, but I remember the FE 70-200mm lens I reviewed being a litter softer than this 70-300mm. Both lenses are great though, don't get me wrong. Based on your needs that you described, I would go with the FE 70-300mm or Tamron. You can easily focus for portraits and landscape with either lens, and the extra reach is a nice bonus. The f/4 @ 20mm of the 70-200mm is a nice advantage, but I don't think you will need that unless shooting in very low light or natural light where the faster aperture is often preferred. In that case I would just slap on the 55mm f/1.8 lens though ;) I hope that helps and best of luck with your decision! Jay

Hi Marvin. Both lenses are great and offer great optical quality. The FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens offers better build quality and weather sealing, more manual buttons for easier control, faster autofocus, and a constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range. In addition the zooming is all internal, so the lens does not extend when zooming. The 70-300mm has an extra 100mm which is really nice if needed but extendes when zooming. The FE 70-300mm also has a slower max aperture of f/4.5 - 5.6 compared to the constant f/4. I hope that helps? Jay

Hello and great question guys! The 24-240mm lens is a great option for an all in one solution. My review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anuxioydp9CJiJY The optical quality is very good, but not in the same league as this beast reviewed here. The distortion is more noticeable, the corners are not as sharp, and the color and contrast are not as good. Overall, the 24-240mm is a great option for all-in-one coverage when needed. I would not consider it a killer lens though like this FE 70-300mm unit. So, depending on your needs the 24-240mm lens can totally be a better option, if you need the wide angle coverage and don't want to change lenses often or ever. I hope that helps, Jay

I have a question for you. Not sure how true this is but another reviewer was quoted as saying that using full frame native Sony lenses on a Sony APS-C camera such as the 6300 for example would not perform equally as well as using them on a full frame Sony camera and only native Sony APS-C lenses should be used for optimum performance. Is this true? I'm asking because Nikon states that there's zero difference using their full frame lenses on their DX (aps-c) cameras, other than the 1.5X crop factor of course. I'm asking because I have an A6300 and since native Sony APS-C lenses are limited I wanted to use Sony full frame like what you're showing in this video.
@mavfan18 жыл бұрын
I've heard this about Canon APS-C vs. Full Frame and of course Nikon is going to say it's not an issue, but honestly while there may be a tiny difference it's not something you're ever going to notice unless you spend all your time zoomed in to 300% pixel peeping instead of taking photos. I have an A7r, A7II and a A6300 and my lenses are the Batis 85mm, G master 24-70 2.8, the 24-200, and the 28mm F2 and I shoot with all four lenses on all three cameras and I've never noticed a difference. I was especially interested in how the G Master 24-70 did on the A6300 and it was every bit as sharp as it was on the A7 models. Of course the A7r has more MP but the A7II is 24mp just like the A6300 and the results look just as detailed. In other words don't worry about internet talk and go take photos!

mavfan1 Oh man, you're awesome! I appreciate it. I love my A6300. I'm still on the kit lens but plan to get either the 18-105 G lens ($599) or perhaps a G-master lens for it. I primarily use it for video but definitely want to use it for photos. I'll use one of your links when I'm ready to buy as I only purchase my camera equipment from B&H Photo.

Hello, There is no negative optical consequence to using a full frame lens on a crop factor body. The only negative is the lens is larger than it needs to be and heavier. etc.. Crop factor lenses are smaller and easier to handle is all. The focus speed is arguable more efficient, because the focus elements are smaller and less weight as well. When using a full frame lens on a crop factor body, you are just using the center area. So, optical quality is arguable better in the corners than on the full frame sensor.

The 18-105mm G lens is a better option for video with the a6300, because it has the killer powerzoom built in and more range than any of the g-master lenses. Those lenses are also awesome, but much heavier and larger due to the fast f/2.8 apertures etc... Optical quality will be better on the g-master lenses though, for sure.

Hello Jay, thanks for the great review. But which lens has the better picture quality? Sony 70-300 or Tamron 70-300? Does the Tamron focus well on a Sony A7R2? Is the LA-EA3 Adapter the best choice to connect an A7R2 with Tamron? Regards from Germany(all the best for 2017) Joerg
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Hello Joerg and great question! The Tamron 70-300mm lens I have not used personally, but the "good one" is very close to the Sony in IQ. The LA-EA3 lens adapter would be the one to get with the A7r II I would say ;) Best of luck and same to you for the new year!!

hi dear, thank you for your review and i would like to ask you, why always when you mentioned your camera name and model you're saying a7r original? are there non original version in the market? or duplicated? i own one a7r.

I have the A7r, the new model is the A7r II, which has built in sensor stabilization. I wanted to make sure you guys new I was using the older model A7r, or original.... Sorry for the confusion :)

Thx for feedback,another thing, can it be mounted on the SEL14TC and SEL20TC?
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. The tele converters are only for the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM Lens as far as I know.
@kevintsaihy67298 жыл бұрын
Oops, That's kinda sad!!
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the optics have to be able to except the teleconverter. Other manufactures have the same issue and it usually only works on a few lenses for whatever reason. A shame, I agree!

great review ! have you tested the AF-C with the lens on other Sony body with PDAF? any thoughts? thank you
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Thank you and I have not tested the lens on any other cameras, but it does performs much faster on the A7r II based on the other reviews on youtube. Also, the A7r II focus faster with every lens I have tried, so from that point of view it should certainly be much faster and more accurate with moving subjects in particular.

The MTF shows up smoother at 300mm than at 70mm. An interesting compromise.

great review! I was hesitating between this one and the 70-200F4 . Is there a big difference of image quality between the 2 lenses ?
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
No, not much difference in IQ, I would go with the 70-300mm personally for the extra reach :)
@Traveljournalist8 жыл бұрын
Jay SonyAlphaLab yes! That's what I did and I'm very glad of my choice!

Informative and useful review, thanks! Can you compare the new Sony FE 100-400 with the Canon EF 100-400 ver II shooting with the same Sony FF body, please? (Sharpness @400mm, AF speed, lens based IS/OSS efficiency, and close up image quality @ 1m distance.)
@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
I would love to, but I just don't think I'm going to be able to get all that gear at once... I can tell you for sure, the Sony FE 100-400mm will focus faster on the Sony camera body, no question. Image quality however, will be very close otherwise, because both lenses are killer quality in all areas. It would be hard to tell the difference, even when pixel peeping!! Each lens will have a slight advantage here or there, but again, very hard to tell. Jay

Hi Jay, I'm stuck on this lens for my a6500 or buying a rx10 iv for doing some birding. What is your thought? Thanks Jay
@Jason_Hermann7 жыл бұрын
Effective 600mm vs ~450mm? Depending on how close you can get, the 70-300mm will offer a little more due to the larger sensor a6500 camera. Otherwise the rx10 IV 600mm effective is a great advantage I would say. Other options like the Tamron 150mm-600mm via lens adapter, can be used on the a6500, but the size and weight are a lot compared to the RX10 IV, and harder to use. Personally I would rather have the RX10 IV for ease of use, reach, and overall quality. If I wanted better quality, then the FE 100-400mm GM lens would be my next option for max reach and quality optics. possible adding the 1.4X TC lens adapter for more reach. The smaller 1" sensor RX10 IV is not as good as the larger sensors in low light, so that may be important to you and worth noting. You never get something for nothing ;) I hope that helps!

Great review...but I would like to ask you. I'm about to get or this lens or the sony 70-200 f4. I'm a bit confused don't know which one buy. I'm looking for use on landscape. What you will suggest me? Thanks
@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
I would get the 70-300mm lens personally ;) Both are great, but the 70-200mm is a little better for sports oriented photography. I would go for the better range and value for the dollar! I hope that helps.

2 things :) ? 1: has anyone tested this with the a6000...i cant give this camera up it is unbeatable in the water for surf photography and have the dollars invested in housings. 2: this thing doesnt have a tripod mount? wont this stress the camera frame as its packi g a bit of weight cheers
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
I have not tried the lens on the A6000, but it should work awesome! Yes, the A6000 would be stressed a bit mounted to a tri-pod with tis lens, but as long as you don't bounce it or anything, it should be fine...

We all know oss increases the weight and size of the lens. Not sure why sony have oss in their lenses when they have ibis in almost all cameras. I dont understand the logic. All new sony lenses are bulky because of this. Mirrorless losing its main advantage. I think sony should make non oss irrespective of any lens which reduce size weight and also cost.
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
The optical IS makes it even better! The sensor stabilization is great, but combined with the optical, it's incredible ;) Not all the cameras have sensor stabilization, like my A7r for example.... All the new units due though, now that the A6500 came out.

Nothing to do with the lens or the review (for the most part), but please would you drop the 'dots'? It's 4 POINT 5 - 5 POINT 6, not 4 DOT 5 - 5 DOT 6. There is no difference in difficulty, or time, to say the correct nomenclature.
@Jason_Hermann8 жыл бұрын
Ok, I really appreciate the feedback and will try my best to correct that. It's a bad habit, so it's actually not that easy for me to say point instead believe it or not ;) It can be done though!
