Is shallow depth of field/ bokeh really that important for sports action? For me it doesn't matter much as long as I get sharp detailed photos in action. Yes, for static portraits bokeh is very nice to have in shots. But for sports action photography where subject is a bit hard to focus closer in the frame you would want your subject to be sharp in all parts of the body, same with wildlife where you want an eagle to be as sharp from the eyes to the wing tips and the tail.

Would you recommend purchasing this or the Sigma 70-200 2.8 sport lens? I already have the mc11 adapter, and will be shooting mostly portraits and weddings instead of sports. I'm comparing these two lenses due to their similar price rather than consider the Sony 70-200 2.8 at a much higher price.
@nemethmik8 жыл бұрын
You are a very nice guy, definitely. When you mentioned the $3500 Sigma 120-300/f2.8 at 8:16, I guess you were just kidding. The Sony 70300 is a $1000 lens, far from a professional mega-thousand dollar sports lens. Still, I think it is comparable to the $2000 Canon 100-400/f5.6L at 300mm, or Sigma/Tamron 150-600/f5-6.3 at 300mm. Another meaningful comparison would be with the SAL70-400/f4-5.6. It is so meaningless to mention F5.6 as a drawback of a f5.6 lens, it's part of its specification. When I need an f4 or f2.8 lens at 300mm, I am looking at lenses with that specs. Anyhow, you are really a very nice person.

+that1cameraguy My experience so far with Sony A6300 Auto focus system. Maybe we can discuss this further. 1) Wide - AF points cover the whole screen and it will prioritize the focusing on the center subject which is near to you. Works well i) when the subject cover most of the screen, ii) when single moving subject with relative clean or isolated background. Don't work well i) when there multiple moving subject ii) foreground and background moving subjects. 2) Zone - 3 x 3 grid AF points moving around the screen which is divided to a 5 x 5 grid. It work similar to Wide. 3) Center - A centre focus square. It appears to be slow and does not seems to be using multiple AF points within it but achieve AF as a single large square. 4) Flexible Spot (L,M,S) - Behave similar to Center but with the ability to adjust the size of the AF square and the position of it across the screen. Use for more precise focusing. The smaller the AF square the faster the AF speed. 5) Expand Flexible Spot - This is a like flexible spot S with 8 AF points surrounding it. Use for precise focusing with 8 assisted AF points to adjust focus for slight movement of subject. 6) Lock-on AF (Wide, Zone, Centre, Flexible Spot, Expand Flexible Spot) - This is the Sony tracking AF function. It basically use the AF Area to acquire the initial focus/subject and track it across the whole screen. Using Wide or Zone, cannot reliably tell the camera what is the initial focus/subject (it is back to the centre, nearer to you or with more contrast). Using Center or Flexible spot, the initial acquisition of focus seems slower especially with focus on one subject then switch to another. Expand Flexible Spot works the best coupled with back button AF-on, the initial acquisition of focus is fast between subjects. I tried using this to shoot netball and find the result quite satisfactory. With LA-EA3, the available Focus Areas are only Wide, Centre and Flexible Spot (L,M,S). Wide behaves as it is with native lens, but strangely Centre and Flexible (L,M,S) uses AF points within the AF square instead and the focus is faster as compared flexible spot with native lens
@534A538 жыл бұрын
+dracoid4 Thanks for the summary however I'm always confused which mode to use and when. Obviously I would use Flexible spot when I want precise AF point on a stationary subject. However which mode to use when taking images of moving wildlife such as birds for instance?

I've never used the Sony a7. I feel that you'd be better off with an Sony a6000/a6300 if you'd be shooting sports. If the arena is well lit, then the 70-300 is good. If it's dark, you may want to go with the 70-200 F4. I'm not too sure on your entire situation, but honestly, you'd be better off selling the a7 and picking up something like a refurb 70D and grabbing a used Sigma 70-200 F2.8 OS. That's just my recommendation. Sony is just way too expensive to work with. DSLR's just have so many more lens options. They are also much cheaper. Cheaper Option a6000 + Sony 55-210 (If the arena is lit well, this would be an affordable and effective pairing)

@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
You will definitely still want a lens with a larger aperture like F2.8 or F4. This lens will affect your low-light ability. If sticking with Sony look at the 70-200 f2.8 g-master, consider a 1.4x extender if you need a bit more reach. You can also consider lenses from canon and using an adapter.

I have not been able to determine whether or not the a6300 SteadShot setting to turn lens SteadyShot on or off should be on or off when using the optical SteadyShot in the lens. I certainly know that they both should be off at shutter speeds less than 1/500 to avoid acuity degradation. Any guidance would be appreciated.
@Kindersama8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Markham a6300 doesn"t have IBIS/SteadyShot.
@jackmarkham15168 жыл бұрын
I know that. LOL out loud. I have one. Camera Set-up: menu 8: SteadyShot: On/Off
@Kindersama8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Markham then why ask if steadyshot will be turned off if you turn it off in the menu? :)
@jackmarkham15168 жыл бұрын
The a6300 has a menu item that turns SteadyShot on and off in the lens. When I want SteadyShot On in my Sony 10-18 f/4 lens which does not have a dedicated switch to turn SteadyShot On or Off, I turn SteadShot On or Off with this camera menu item. When I use a shutter speed over 1/500 second, I turn this menu item Off so that SteadyShot is no longer active in the lens. The Sony 70-300 FE f/4.5-5.6 OSS lens (I get mine tomorrow from B&H) has a switch to select SteadyShot On or Off. My question then is this. If I turn SteadyShot Off in the camera menu item, will SteadyShot be Off in the lens regardless of the position of the SteadyShot switch on the lens? In other words, should I leave the camera menu item On or Off while I am switching Steady shot On or Off with the switch on the lens? I do not understand the interaction between the SteadyShot camera menu and the SteadyShot switch on the lens.
@Kindersama8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Markham It's the same. Some lenses like you said don't have a dedicated switch. The menu option is only for lenses that doesn't have that switch button (SEL35, SEL24, etc.). If the lens has the button (SEL70200 or the SEL70300 above), you don't have to use the menu option, use the switch on the lens.

Would this footage have been riddled with rolling shutter and unusable if it'd been shot on an a6300?
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
The slow motion shots I did were shot on the a6300, but in 1080p 120fps. In 4k, you would definitely notice it.

hey can you recommend either this sony 70-300 or sigma 70-200 f2.8?TQ
@that1cameraguy7 жыл бұрын
If you want continuous autofocus, you need the 70-300. The 70-200 F2.8 Sigma will work but only for still subjects.

I only recommend it if you need the reach.

How did you like the sony system over the canon?
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
+Philip Ypon Having used the Sony Mirrorless system for the past few months, the only real compelling advantage I find with the system is the 4k, high frame rate video, and electronic viewfinder. If I only shot photos, then I would prefer the Canon system over the Sony. Just last night I shot a dance, and my a7rii died on me all of a sudden. It had an OEM battery grip with two OEM batteries, one battery died and for whatever reason, did not jump to the second battery. If it was a paid gig, I would have missed some important stuff. However, that’s a quirk that all systems have and I’ve had my fair share of odd quirks like that with Canon. Their still aspects of the Sony system I don’t like, like the small buffer for raw it has, slow movement of focus points, low light focusing is a mix, and not a lot of lighting options for the system just yet. I really love my Canon 600 EX-Rt’s.
@Pinoysoundmachine748 жыл бұрын
+that1cameraguy Well, i guess you'll appreciate the portability on the a7r ii's as well as their 4k video capabilities. That's a bummer it gave up on you in the middle of the shoots, at least you weren't shooting weddings. However, the auto focusing and battery life on the a7r ii's are the main drawbacks on this camera. Somehow, sony will addressed and fixed these issues on their next a7r ii successor. I totally agree with you on choosing canon for stills over sony, i think canon produce better skin tones than any cameras in my opinion and that is indeed subjective. I've read that canon is about to unveil their new 600 ex-rt mark ii version speed light very soon! Good luck and have fun with your sony system. Great job! and keep the reviews and videos coming! 👍👍👍

+Philip Ypon Thanks, really appreciate it. I will say though, it is a must to have the battery grip on the Sony a7Rii when shooting an event. It was weird when it died on me, but in most cases, having the battery grip was necessary. For what I've been shooting, I haven't had to swap batteries out because of it.

Hi, can you tell us something about how it works with the A6000, especially in terms of PDAF capabilities and hi ISO management? Are there downsides or issues for this full frame-native lens in terms of Image Quality on the APS-C format cameras (including the A6300) ? Thank You
@dagoncalves19866 жыл бұрын
Massenzio Taborelli have you got the combo you talk about? (a6000 + 70-300mm G) if so, how is it working out for you brother? i'm really considering it for surf photography so any feedback would be great
@GeneralGarvel8 жыл бұрын
I feel like this would work amazingly with the a7s2
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
+GeneralGarvel How so? How do you plan to use the two in conjunction?
@GeneralGarvel8 жыл бұрын
+that1cameraguy the lowlight on the a7s would make up for the lack of low aperture
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
Ah, okay. Got it.
@zufall8 жыл бұрын
+GeneralGarvel A7s2 only has CDAF, not PDAF, so its tracking abilities may not be up to those of the a-6000/a-6300 or other 2nd-series A7 bodies (A72, A7r2) that do have PDAF. No direct experience on my part though, just sayin'...

I want to see no more focus by wire lenses. At least not as many. Sony targets video makers with cameras like the a7s ii, a6300 and a7r ii but then gives us the worst type of lenses for video. I will just stick with Rokinon for video and Sony for photo. Great review, nice to see some zooms come out. Only if they made it faster.
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
+skatertwig26 Thanks. Yeah, for sure. I'm sure will start seeing more variety soon.

@bershath8 жыл бұрын
+skatertwig26 I disagree, the full frame mirrorless sensors aren't aiming mainly at videographers. Sony has FS5 and 7 for videographers. You might need to think of CaNikon if you don't like the focus by wire lenses.... The recently launched GM lenses have focus by wire mechanism. (I bought 24-70GM and that's a great great lens TBH).
@skatertwig268 жыл бұрын
Ty I didn't say mainly, I said "Sony targets videographers". Which they do. The slog 3, internal 4k and so on shows it. That by no means, mean they don't largely target photographers too. They are trying to take over both markets. I am not saying that their lenses aren't great because they are. I just wish they would have a line that were not focus by wire. I would not shoot Nikon or Canon. I shoot both photo's and video a bit so I need a camera that does both well. Nikon and Canon fall short for video. I also can not stand using OVF'S. I will continue what I am doing, Rokinon for video, Sony for photo. It is not a big enough issue to switch. It is just something they should think about. Since so many people have the same issue. I really like my Sony. I had the a65, a7 and now the a6300 and each were fantastic. My favorite being the a6300. I am curious to see what the a9 will be.

What's the point of this lens in comparison to 24-240? Both are large and slow lenses. 5.6 vs 6.3? not much difference. And what's the difference between 240 and 300 in real life zooming to infinity? not much. Out of these twos, 24-240 is actually cheaper and covers more useful range.
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the lens myself so I can't really comment. For sports and possibly wildlife, every bit of reach helps in the end.

I have been thinking about getting this lens for my a6300 but im worried it will be useless for indoor school gyms for sports, that are poorly lit, since its only f4.5.. Its a expensive lens for me. Is it worth it? I was gonna use it outdoors as well.

cost aside, which lemse do you prefer... the 70_200f4 or 70-300 f4.5-5.6? thanks
@that1cameraguy8 жыл бұрын
It's tough to say right now. I think the 70-300 is the better lens. The F4 is alright on the 70-200, but you get a lot more reach out of the 70-300. It really depends on what you shoot. Honestly, once I get the 70-200 G-Master and 1.4x extender. These two lenses will become a little obsolete for me.
@njrmax728 жыл бұрын
+that1cameraguy thx... only concern is sharpness.. is the 70-200 any sharper?

"The lens will creep when if pull down on it." I don't think you know what lens creep means.

I thought the lock was to lock creeps from using it. Lens creep is actually when the lens creeps down by itself, not when you pull down on it.
