I've just discovered your channel as I've just bought my first camera, an A7r IV and am deciding on the right lens for me. The 16-35 f/4 or the f/2.8 version. To me, at those focal lengths, pretty much everything is going to be in focus, so I'm guessing the 2.8 version is more for low-light situations. But.... regarding the distortion, wouldn't that happen with any wide angle lens? You'll always get some distortion so is the 2.8 better distortion-wise? However, isn't the f/4 version a lot sharper than the 2.8 version? Plus of course all the other advantages, including the lower price. Thanks for your help, many thanks, subscribed :)

The camera corrects for almost all the distortion no matter which lens you use if you enable that feature in camera so thats the biggest deal. The f/2.8 will be better in low light yes, but the lens is much larger and heavier alao. Sharpness is very similar I would say. The new GM II 15-35mm that is coming out should be smaller and lighter I would gather, but honestly I would go for this lens myself.

You used this lens just like I would. Great casual rig when paired with the a7C. I need to try my hand with HDR next. How did you attain this lens so early?

Hi Cesar and thanks for the comments ;) I try to do my own thing with reviews to help people that think like myself... This is exactly how I would use the lens, plus some gimbal work that I did not get a chance to do... HDR is a lot of fun I highly recommend trying it out! I was able to barrow this lens early courtesy of a new friend I have that works with Sony... All the best, Jay

My issue is it looks distortion correction makes the 16mm more like something between 18-20. Would be interesting to see how much wider this actually is than the 20mm 1.8 G (where distortion is very well controlled), and how many Pixels you lose when correcting distortion on stills.

there's review from others where a comparsion of 1635 gm and 1635 pz is made. i can't recall which one it is, but it didn't loose much view angle in the compare. And it's apparent that 16mm for this lense is much wider than 20mm G

Would you recommend this or the GM as a travel option? Thinking to pair with a 24-70 f2.8. I’m tempted by the PZ as it’s so small and compact

I would rather have this smaller compact lens myself, but it is a f/4 aperture when compared to the f/2.8 GM lens if that matters to you.

@@Jason_Hermann I don't think I'm that bothered for low light - 16mm allows some very low shutter speeds if needed. 35mm f2.8 is handy to have in the same lens for the occasional people photo though. So your vote is its worthwhile sacrificing the f2.8 for the size of this lens? Photos only by the way! Jason, as ever, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yeah if I had the choice I would rather have the smaller more compact lens for a wide angle and the powerzoom is just a bonus for video as well. If you don't need the powerzoom I recently got a used FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA Lens and it is also fairly small and compact. You can find some really good used deals these days!!

@@Jason_Hermann I don’t need the PZ, I don’t do any video. I thought the PZ was potentially the better long term lens because it’s still lighter and smaller. What are your thoughts on the image quality between the Zeiss and the PZ? Do you find the PZ ok for photography?

IQ is very close, but prolly slightly better on the new PZ lens I would say...
