Really appreciate the info and comparisons. Nearly picked up the 16-35 Zeiss as I know Potato Jet used that one a lot. But by the time I realized I should have gotten it, already had the G Master and couldn't justify buying the same focal range to save .35 pounds (150 grams). But going from the G Master to the PZ 16-35 f4 is a SIGNIFICANT weight reduction (340 grams or .75 pounds). You mentioned some things I didn't even consider that made me even happier for getting it. Not having the focal markings is annoying, but I really enjoy the feel of the zoom as it's more like an actual video lens. The one thing I wish Sony did better (unless they have already and I just don't realize it) is when transitioning from optical to digital zoom, there doesn't seem to be a way to make it feel like one continuous smooth motion. No matter what I did, it seemed to jump. So I shut off digital zoom completely.

Nice look at the lens! I was planning to get this lens to replace my 20mm 1.8 but after trying the new PZ I returned it and kept my 20mm. Because I'm used to the 20mm I felt the 16mm had too much warp to me when vlogging, so I was always wanting to push in... I did post a vlog with the 16-35 pz before returning it :) Besides the super wide 16 having some warp is was super crispy and sharp!

Handsome review/comparison - as usual. Have you heard of the step up rings by Revoring? I own the 49mm-62mm model with a 67mm thread. Which allows me to use it on lenses with a thread mount between 49mm and 62mm with a 67mm filter. Most of my lenses have a 62mm thread and below. My ND/Polarized/ProMist filters are all 67mm. With the Revoring it prevents vignetting, because the filter itself is 67mm. The magic is in the self-contained spring-loaded Revoring. You twist the ring to "shrink" the thread, pop it on your lens, and let go, and the Revoring becomes mounted to the lens. Then, screw on your filter, and you're ready to go. Anyway...I thought I'd share that.

The way I shoot videos is to do a short clip and then power the camera off to save battery till the next clip. Does this PZ lens always reset zoom when powered off, or it can be restored once the camera powers on? It would be nice if the Zoom value was stored in memory presets as well. But I guess it is asking too much.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis update... so I did order the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 (new off Amazon) but I'm sorry to say the AF has proven to be steaming hot garbage (hits focus point only about 10% of the time and that LCD screen distance indicator jumps around like crazy) so it's going back... it seems that Viltrox has some work to do on the quality control front. The 11mm is very wide and very small so it will be great for travelling and being close to the camera. the sigma 16 is amazing, but it’s bigger and heavier and is much tighter. go for the 11. I did a video on it you can check out if you haven’t already.

I received my copy over the weekend and compared against the older Zeiss 16-35. The PZ seems wider (coming in at equivalent to approx 15mm relative to the zeiss - I haven’t done any actual FOV calculations). Is that something you noticed in testing?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
All the new Sony lenses do see, a tab wider than the stated focal length. I think they are doing that to leave more room for software corrections.
@stephensanderson3286
@stephensanderson3286 Жыл бұрын
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Agreed. The uncorrected RAW on the PZ does certainly have a lot of headroom, but even accounting for that it’s wider than the Zeiss. Win! BTW, I should thank you for including the bit about circular filters and step-up rings not causing vignetting on the PZ; it decided things for me 👍

I had an opportunity to shoot this lens for a few sample images and compare the same scene and settings using the original 16-35F4 at F8 which I use frequently for landscapes. I shot both at 16mm, 24mm and 35 and even at 200-300 zooms didn't really see all that much difference. So maybe this new lens is sharper, as it should be but even if it is, I didn't see anything more than a very small difference in image quality.

The new one is £1299 here in UK (ripped off on prices here) but I can get it grey import for £875. I’m wanting to stick with Sony for this focal length due to the significantly better stabilisation over non Sony. I’d really like to see some cross lenses mass test on stabilisation- Sony v non Sony on ZVE1 across a whole range of lenses, that would be a great video!

Hi - I think that its crucial that you add to your review that the power zoom of this new lens WILL NOT function with those models from the menu - YOU CAN NOT SET THE ZOOM SPEED! I bought this lens and then had to return it. the quality of the lens is superb - but the fact that you can't control the speed from a gimbal or a remote is stupidly annoying and missing the main intention of the power zoom. the fx3 and even the zv10 can do it though.

I captured Milky Ways with the old with the A7S for years at f/4 always daytime like with stars! f/4 with Sony never a problem. Think about f/# like this at f/4 you can do a 20-25s getting pinpoint stars but going f/2.8 maybe 15s then again 1.8 10s then 1.4 8s to get pinpoint stars but all in all bright day like capture with pinpoint stars even at a Bortel zero area, I have always had to reduce exposure level in post to make it look real to others. Very rarely ever above ISO 6400, no matter the MP camera! Sony just kicks others to the curb!

It baffles me why 16-35mm lenses are a big deal. If you're trying to cover the focal range don't most midrange lenses start at 24-ish mm? Like a 24-70mm? I'm curious, do you think this lens is MUCH better than my Sigma 14-24mm? Both are similarly priced.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 2 жыл бұрын
Quality wise the sigma will be just as good. But it is more than double the weight for the Sony system and is much less suited for gimbal work and the focus breathing is not as good. It is however much brighter at a 2.8. Both are great - just depends on your use. In terms of why people like the 16-35 - landscape and astrophotographers always want wider. There is a huge difference between 16 and the 24 of mid-range. Having the 16-35 gives you versatility for the field. Then of course you have the new content creation world which also requires a wide lens for closeup video.
