SONY Firmware FX3/FX30 & FX6. FINALLY Shutter angle and more!!!

Sony will be bringing a new firmware update to the FX3/FX30 and a firmware to the FX6 that will add a few new features in each.
A 1.5x anamorphic de-squeeze is something I have personally been wanting ever since the Sirui full frame anamorphics was released. This just allows for easier framing and composition in-camera.
The Sony FX3 & FX30 have been waiting for a firmware that equips shutter angle since its release. It is one of the most highly requested firmware updates for these cameras since the wear the Cinema Line badge as traditionally cinema cameras use shutter angle and not shutter speed.

With the addition of the shutter angle, the fx30 in my opinion becomes the best budget s35 cinema camera. Yea false color and waveforms is on an app but I'm ok with that. and yea the newer firmware updates kill third party battery support, but id rather spend extra money on Sony batteries to have all the new functions theyve added with the last update and will be adding with this new update

While this isn't the BIGGEST deal, it's rather silly that it wasn't in the FX3 out of the box and even sillier that now we have to wait till September. I think it was an arbitrary exclusion upon release to justify buying the FX6 (though internal NDs was more than enough incentive!).

Does anybody know, its still have problems with switching NTSC/PAL like it was after previous update? Or they fixed it in the new one? I couldnt update my fx30 because of problem with switching region, otherwise my camera would become useless without 25fps...

Sony has best autofocus and dependability, but Lumix/Panasonic line has ALWAYS had these features plus waveform and better codecs now (ProRes) on the S5 models. I don't understand why Sony always lags behind them yet claim they are pro cameras.

Sony is like the iPhone android had features for years and the iPhone is just now getting them.. I have a fx30 but I’m thinking about upgrading to a red Komodo or the x a real cinema camera but the fx30 or the Fx3 still doesn’t have waveforms

Probley because the Sony Venice is giving Hollywood a run for its money over Red and next to Arri. The FX6, 3, and 30 can be a B and C cam to the Vince with the same color science.

​They have waveforms and false color in the monitor and control app which can pretty much replace a monitor. And unless your really running and gunning with a super light setup, you'll be using some kind of monitor that has those functions. That's sweet. I'm still working on my a7iv. I want to use it for B cam in the future. Maybe as my 2nd camera I will look into the FX cameras. I've rent it for some projects and I do love it. I think sony will drop a new FX camera soon. Like they have announced a9m3 together with the new firmware update (spring). Fingers crossed a new FX in August/September hehe

I dont have this option for the Shutter fine adjustment on my FX3 (v4) at all. I can see it in photo mode but it only lets me turn it on/off, no manual fine adjustment.

I have the Sony A7iv and just using the C1/C2/C3 custom modes with shutter speed ajusted for each mode. I don't really see the point of shutter angle

It's not just about 180 degrees. If you want to use different shutter angles, you don't have to make the calculation although it's not something that most people use often. Not that big of a deal but a nice addition. I had shutter angle on my gh5 and don't find that I miss the feature that much. I would take waveform over that but won't complain.

It's helpful for people that are new to the camera to show exactly how to navigate to that screen for shutter angle. There's a lot of menus and it's not clear how to get there. Thanks for the video anyway. Hopefully someone can help.

For everyone waiting on a firmware update be very careful. My fx3 is about 3 years old and out of warranty I updated from firmware 4.0 to 5.0 through the creators app it literally bricked my camera and it was not operable I got in touch with Sony Pro support and send it off to Precision Camera and in turn was quoted $1,100 and with Pro support I get 20% off and then they told me that because the cameras out of warranty they can give me an extra 10% off but I still have to pay for my camera being brick from a firmware update because it is out of warranty apparently the Control Board needs replaced also part of that quote is to replace the sensor filter that is not related

@@jholmes4824 WOW .... shoutout to @sony. My mother board went out literally a week before warranty ended so I got lucky. Nobody wants to pay for an upgrade but I take mine into best buy now. Yeah, they're going to charge you BUT if anything happens you have a reasonable fight and you CANNOT be blamed for anything. Happy you got it fixed.

Thanks for your prompt update. but Sony and Canon are slow with these essentials, I used Sony's F series cameras, they are a big company but why am i liking Panasonic more this year? * Why did Sony wait so long? * Where are the rest of the 'Panasonic features" on the FX that we really need? I had GH5 Waveform, anamorph, + No heat, Non-stop recording and 30 other features 8 years ago. Still absent from Canon, Sony and Nik. * Now we're blown away with extensive With Panasonic's S5ii range ( and even the G9ii) I feel people may do what I did and enjoy Lumixs legendary generosity sooner 😊 I still enjoy your Sony presentation as they re still a good product

i nearly cried when you mentioned the built in desqueeze. i would literally kill to get a built in desqueeze on the a7IV. would easily make my a7IV perfect, especially if i could decide to desqueeze the hdmi output seperately for a hdmi monitor chain. would actually be incredible for working on a gimbal, especially dji raveneye which doesnt support desqueeze yet. portability improvement would be huge as i wouldnt need to use an external monitor. would easily make the a7IV the perfect camera

Won't happen. A7 IV is limited by sensor speed, and it's not great. You can see that because rolling shutter is quite bad on it already.

Yup and you guys cant shoot without a cage and extra battery set up and have terrible rolling shutter. You also have no autofocus so bmd is pretty hard to use on a small crew music video. Also they're design is very unwieldy. Great cameras but too many drawbacks compared to the fx series especially the fx30 and 3

@@paperstacksfilmsyou can definitely shoot without a cage. Tell me one cinematographer that doesn’t use a bigger battery system if shooting seriously. Autofocus has its place but there is a reason why it’s not a huge deal outside of the prosumer market. The design is a bit weird but no camera body is perfect. I hear what you’re saying but my point is there is a clear difference between camera meant for “cinema” shooting and others that are on the line.

@@Mr_Moka the fx30 is 100% capable of producing feature film level images when paired with good glass. It has all the functionality essentially so. IDK I just prefer the form factor of it over the bmd cameras. I've also been on indie features that has issues with multiple bmds and media or lighting issues cause of the cameras sensitivity to noise even within its iso range. I've seen plenty of good results and heard good things as well but I just prefer my the design and reliability of Sony and their sensors

I mean with this firmware update coming it pretty much confirms the fx 3 mii will have false color and waveforms in camera and shutter angle from jump. Ai autofocus is almost for sure a definite after it was included in the a6700. And they may manage to include an electronic nd filter I think. Fx30 mii will probably mirror those upgrades and hopefully so away with the crop for 4k120.

Yeah internal ND is hardware and not firmware. We would have to wait until maybe an FX6 ii to get open gate and ibis with the internal ND. I wouldn’t count on the smaller cameras to get these as yet

The problem with the FX3 and the FX 30 is that the monitor screens on the back kind of sucks. Why they removed the EVF is beyond me and that is why the a7S3 will always be the better choice. And I like how you say, you don’t have to think about it. That’s the problem with most shooters, they don’t think. 🤔 And by the way the EVF on the A7s3 Is absolutely fantastic.

They definitely don't, my fx30 rear LCD in sunny weather mode is by far the best camera LCD I've ever had and I've used all the major brands. Only that comes close in Panasonic in my opinion. And using the eye peice is a hybrid shooter thing. Most video shooter that buy these two cameras are video only shooters who are used to working off a monitor. You can also set up a very high quality eye peice that's better positioned to shoot with a rigged up camera with the fx30 and 3 so
