Sony FX3 or A7SIII? Which one for VIDEO.

Great video, thanks. I will say, though, I'm sticking with my A7S III which I use exclusively for video. All because of the EVF. I find it incredibly helpful to use the EVF at times while shooting. The FX3 advantages really don't make up for the lack of EVF in my opinion.

I have both and I enjoy shooting with the fx3 more. Lots of little reasons. The biggest is just how the modes change. Makes more sense the way the fx3 works.

You are 100% right about the recording ligths. Love them. Also I love the front recording button. The Sony A7 SIII and FX3 are quite similar in terms of core video capabilities, atleast according to every major youtube camera reviewer, therefore I opted for the A1 (gives me the best 8K) and an FX3 (gives me the best 4K)

As a new FX-3 owner, this was useful to me as I picked up on a behavior of the camera I didn't know about. I've probably watched fifty KZbin videos on the FX-3. As far as the shortage, if someone wants an FX-3, they should just place an order and be patient. Mine took about six weeks from a well-known retailer. Waiting for a camera to be "in stock" is a good way to miss out, at least until the supply chain catches up.

I was looking for either, and it just so happened that my local camera store had a website error. They had two FX3s on the shelf that nobody knew about (shout out to my homies at McBain). I only found out because when I called to order one they were like “we have…two?” At that point I had money in my hand and was like “take it” because of the current shortage. I wouldn’t have found another before the new year. My rationale is that if I really need to do stills, adding an a7m4 to the mix will be trivial. The FX rides a gimbal better for me (my rode SVMX is talllllll, and an EVF just makes it taller and less balanceable), so I don’t miss the EVF… AT ALL. The layout is well thought out for handheld, and I super duper love the flexible exposure mode and how it plays with those FX specific custom buttons. Also yes, tally lights. Also double yes, active cooling.

Great video! I'm about 90% sure that the A7SIII also has the option to a read light (either blink, or constant) from the front of the unit. It's not as visible as the FX3's. But it's something! Viewfinder to me is irreplaceable though.

When I bought my A7S III, I was in a weird position that, on that particular day in March, both the FX 3 and A7S III were in stock. And while the FX 3 is the better deal, B&H was running an EDU deal with raw A&S III for $3,148. So I obviously bought that one. Some days I wonder if I made the right choice, but I took that extra money and bought a cage and side handle.

The FX3 doesn’t go far enough, does it? No shutter angle (only speed). No shutter micro adjust for anti-LED-flickering. No true 24p. No internal squeezing for anamorphic. No open gate (full sensor video). No LUT previews. No focus mapping. No breathing compensation. All those could be added in firmware, and hopefully we’ll see some of them. The following are also minor hardware issues that should have been fixed before launch: Lack of mounting holes to secure from rotation. No electronic ND (probably cost or not to cannibalize the FX6). Not enough dedicated buttons. Included XLR handle is not durable enough and also a bit awkward.

It's not really a cinema camera, adding it to their cinema line was just a marketing stunt. Just like it's low light performance was also a marketing move. If you shoot in RAW on an external monitor, you'll realize that the low light performance is just the camera cleanly packaging it up with noise reduction for you. In RAW you see what the sensor is actually picking up (kind of, it still slaps SLOG3 on there) and there is a lot of noise. And the same with 16 bit RAW being a marketing stunt, because it can't actually go past 12 bit. But it still is the best little video camera around, and it has been perfect for what I've been using it for.

I’m a comedian and am torn between the A7Siii and FX3. I primarily will stick it on a tripod and film myself in comedy clubs (low light) 4K 24 perhaps as long as 30-45 minutes. Is it possible that the A7Siii will overheat? The FX3 has an internal fan and that’s the only thing making me second guess myself.

I would play it safe and go with the FX3. Although it seems the A7SIII does not seem to overheat, why taking a chance in an indoor club environment.

I m thankful to FX3 for bringing out the best in me. Since I had the FX3 I have been more active shooting weddings almost every weekend. And this camera surprises me more and more special the 10bit codec makes color grading more fan and easier. My videos look way better compared to a year ago. I had a a7iii but it was just home picking up dust, got lazy and no motivation. I wanna buy a 2nd one but I might go with the a7 s3 because my assistant shooter loves to use the EVF specially in this hot sunny summer.

Not sure when you recorded this but Adorama and Best Buy both had them available earlier today. As a matter of fact Adorama, at the time of this writing still has these cameras to ship in a couple of days. I bought mine from Best Buy and it's already shipped. Had to return my first one because of severe audio interference with the rode wireless go II and support told me it could be defective unit with a bad 3.5mm input port. Hopefully I don't see that issue again.

Hi Chris, can you make about taking still with the FX3. I ran into some issues especially when setting the iso in M-mode. I guess it requires some custom setting adjustments to operate it like a regular Alpha cam for stills. Thanks fir a response. -Jens

Still can't understand why can't add a simple shutter angle function and maybe false color/waveform on this camera via firmare update, feel quite disappointed being it a Cinema line camera.. Over that one thing is important to mention about the audio module, it can't be repositioned or removed from the top handle and it's on the way if you want to install an external monitor. Something that you eventually have to do, considering the limitation of its tiny poor screen. 🙄 Also a missed opportunity was not to have a timecode input on the audio module itself, it may had enought space to fit one, if they wanted to.

I have placed an external monitor atop the handle. I used the SmallRig handle extension, which included a NATO rail, and added a SmallRig monitor mount atop that.

I got the a7siii about three months ago now and honestly want to switch back to the a7c! I’m just too rubbish to warrant the beast! And I did prefer the photos from the a7c.

Literally there’s lot of difference between them Not in quality that much but in purpose 🔥 As far as I’m concerned, Fx3 is worth in-terms of technical side … If you guys are looking for photography & videography at the semi professional level. Photographer’s best choose ever. You can do both at high quality footage for sure… If you are focusing more flimic like videos with more advanced settings ( SLR inputs ,colour tone , higher frame rate , frame free camera , portable, build quality, weather sealed, Cooling fan,waterproof….) and also like to take photographs ,fx3 is your camera.

You’re reasoning is a bit on the side of insanity. If you don’t know if you’re recording or not, if you need a whole bunch of red lights to tell you you’re recording or you’re not recording then you shouldn’t be recording to begin with. I would never own a camera that didn’t have an EVF…What happens if you’re out shooting in super bright sunlight? And don’t tell me you can always add a monitor… You still can’t see a monitor outside but a great EVF is the way to go. If the FX3 had an EVF then yes that would be the one to buy. We’ve done shoots using three A7SIII s and there was never an overheating problem. From your video we can tell that you’re not objective whatsoever. And you were premise; what makes a great cinema camera? It’s about the picture quality and nothing else matters more than that. Picture picture picture not features.
