Came for the S-Cinetone geese, stayed for the fantastic review. It’s strange, as an A7siii owner there is indeed something rather alluring about the FX3 and its slick next-generation design. However having just spent 5 days shooting in the blinding snow of north Japan, I can attest to the importance of an EVF. Without it I would’ve been utterly stuffed!

@@philipbloom When I watched Gerald's video I felt that it looked as if the FX3 might not have the internal sharpening of the A7S3, because on the color chart shots in his video the lines looked much softer on the FX3; however, there are other reasons that could have happened as well. So I figured you of all people would pick up on this if it were true, but like everyone else it seems this is producing the same result. If this is the case then I'm in the same bandwagon of not knowing who this is for. The lack of DCI formats, lack of true 24P, lack of the ability to disable sharpening and noise reduction are all things that I feel exclude this from it's branded title. Almost every other feature included or not included are debatable and subjective, but a true cinema camera, to me, has the ability to lock to 24p, use current cinema aspect ratios, and have minimal internal image processing for easier post work if needed (note a cinema camera can still include additional processing, beyond format compression, but as an option and not a mandate). While any camera can be used for cinematic purposes, to earn the "cinema" in it's label it needs to compile with these fundamental standards otherwise it's just a video or hybrid camera.

It’s totally true that it may only appeal to a very specific market. However, this is the EXACT camera I need and I’m so glad I found out about it right before I pulled the trigger on an A7Siii. For shooting my show I needed a new camera to replace my a7iii that didn’t have record limits, overheating issues and XLR ports for my microphone set up in my studio since I don’t want to keep recording sound on a separate recorder and syncing in post. I was going to buy the a7siii and the K3M but here in Canada the K3M is $800. I never use my EVF and the FX3 costs only $200 more here than the A7Siii, so I consider myself lucky to be in that specific market that the camera is for
@FlipDeRiviera3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The FX3 is more suitable and reliable for professional video work with XLR inputs and active cooling system. EVF is fine to have but proper monitors with wave form and false colors are the way to go anyway for perfect exposure. A7SIII is still a great hybrid camera though. Greetings

Great thorough review. But I think they didn’t add the EVF because that’s what A7Siii is for, people who prefer the EVF. Otherwise, no difference. What’s weird is they removed a high end EVF and still manage to charge more for the same camera because of the XLR module handle without a microphone!

Real tough choice between the two. As you point out, the A7S iii has the EVF that is great but, unless you are at that height it isn't easy to use. I can't help but look around and "connect some dots", you look at BlackMagic's snap on EVF, and Zacutos Gratical and wonder if it is a near future add-on. Looking at a top shot of the hot shoe and I see one screw, makes one wonder how easy it would be for Sony to have that circuitry lurking under there right now. Pretty common for companies to release technology they already have in stages. I'm reminded of the old Mad magazine cartoon of Thomas Edison at a long workbench with an amazing stereo system to the ceiling sitting in front of him. Watson walks in a comments how amazing his latest invention is and how the public will love it. Edison points down to the end of the bench to his 1877 phonograph and says, "no, we'll release this first". Of course, Sony really couldn't put that out till they see the A7S iii sales start the eventual dip as the market is saturated or it would crush the A7S iii and probably dent the A1 sales. I love them both. Thanks for yet another review filled with real information presented with style and professionalism. Your work is always the Gold Standard.

I love the look of it and that all the buttons are dedicated to the video shooter I also am not a huge EVF viewer so if I do need that I have the A7siii for those shots. However, I am very much hoping Sony listens to some of your suggestions in a future firmware. For me- even just adding shutter angle/ variable shutter speeds would make this worth the extra few hundred over the 7siii. The fact that the A1 can do it but this camera can't is puzzling given that this is more video focused than the A1.

I bought an A7S3 after this camera was released. Here is why: I saw the rumors. Since it was clear even before the official launch that Cinetone is coming to the A7S3 and that the FX3 is the same camera without an EVF, I just waited for the release for the rumors to become true. I don’t need the EVF as often or at any time for filming I general. But I like to have it. If the FX3 would’ve gotten a EVND, I probably would’ve let the EVF go for that. But it didn’t. And I don’t need XLR or a handle. And the moment the price was released, I was done with the FX3, no further thoughts. I hoped for it to be a better FX6, and an EVND would’ve done it for me to buy it instantly. In the end, the A7S3 is the best bang for my bucks. Would’ve taken the FX6 happily, if it would have 120p normal, touch tracking af, and the normal alpha menu. If those 3 things would’ve been in the FX6, I probably would’ve even said: screw the missing 3.5mm mic jack and no evf, I’m sold in the EVND. But it didn’t do any of these, so, yeah. The A7S3 it is, coming to my doorstep tommorow. Such a shame Sony made four great video cameras in the past 6 months, and there is not one out of these four that combines the best of them. Maybe we will see one in the near future that combines the best of all these cameras, and maybe tops it even off with a global shutter. I’m dreaming again. Great video as always, I really enjoyed it

With the introduction of Cine EI mode and the new main menu there are some clearer differences between the FX3 and the A7SIII now. You now have DCI 4K in true 24P as well which ticks another of Philip's cinema boxes. However Sony still hasn't given us shutter angle on either camera and it's a real nuisance. The mode button is an interesting one. At first I hated it over the mode dial on the A7SIII but once I learnt that I could oprate via the touch screen rather than the multi function wheel I actually prefer it.

Amazing breakdown Phillip! Even though my film students have access to RED’s, FS7’s, C70’s and BMCC6K Pro’s the A7S3 is still one of the most booked out cameras in our stores area. Something which we see quite a lot is how these smaller cameras can really help first time filmmakers feel more comfortable and confident behind the camera, they’re not as daunting and provide so much freedom from both a technical and creative standpoint, especially across different genres like product videos and music videos, much like the Canon 7D did for myself back in the day (which was most definitely bought about from watching your videos all those years ago). Great content and always look forward to your uploads 👍

I’m pretty excited for the direction Sony is going. Sure the line between alpha & cinema lines is blurring but ultimately that’s better for us. The next top tier cinema camera most likely will have 8k. This is how Sony kinda rolls, pushing out the gear despite what they released prior. They do listen to their customers and eventually put what customers want in the new cameras. Seems like yesterday I bought an a6300 and in that short time frame look at where we are.

Honestly this one was a tricky review! Your video was awesome at explaining all the details! I honestly would sacrifice the evf for flippy screen especially on the go shooting. Not a huge sacrifice. The evf is not important to me because it kind of makes vlogs hard to film and creates a hassle on the body. It was kind of a bummer to find out there is no included mic 🎤 Although I am weighing the cons. This one somehow fits more perfectly for me than the a7s3! Less attachments and more creating! I love how it can take still photos too! The buttons somehow are more compelling to me! I totally understand the importance of EVF for nailing your shots and autofocus correctly! Sometimes I am glad I use autofocus! 85% of the time it works for me without the EVF! Maybe it is okay 👍 Thank you for taking your time to make this video! Definitely you got a new subscriber! @@philipbloom Thank you for your reply. I am asking because I am a fan of your work and I regard you as a (filmmaking) mentor and a trendsetter. In this scene your creative lighting decision made me feel a bit unsettled. I was wondering if it is just me or is this going to be the new trend for 3 point lighting and should I get used to it? It looks quite different than the usual three-point lighting (you teach in your course). Every art form evokes an emotion (according to how it is shaped and coloured) and I consider you an expert in working with details. This partially hidden face lighting is usually used to portray villains 😊, so I wondered what motivated you to use this lighting technique. The background lighting looks wonderful, including the rotating cameras 😊. So in short, I highly value your creative decisions, and I was just looking into some insight, to learn.

I think I would watch Phillip review anything. Pure entertainment. Very soothing. Maybe it's the cats???

Sony made the FX3 camera late! The cooler should have been put in the A7s III, but this did not happen, very bad! This means that buying the A7s III puts the camera in a difficult position))

The problem is if they released the Fx3 earlier than the A7siii, there would be people complaining that they bought a more expensive camera when they could have bought the cheaper (and for most people, better valued) A7siii if they waited

As always a wonderful review Mr. Bloom

Really bizarre product from Sony. You can add an XLR unit to the A7S3, but you can't add an EVF to the FX3 (not as low profile at least). Also that handle is an abomination.

It can take photos and has the same modes as the A7Siii, but if shooting stills is something that’s high on your priority list, you probably should veer away from Cinema lines. Every control and the whole body on the FX3 was optimized for video.

Amazing review! Also I’m really glad people like you (and Gerald and Kasey) are talking about downsides of this camera. It gives me hope that with big names in the space being vocal about certain missing features on FX3 (NR controls, 24p, shutter angle, etc) Sony might actually listen to the community and bring them via firmware or new hardware release (external tilting EVF would be sick!). Can’t wait for your A1 review! Once again, big cheers for another great review, Philip!

Sure, having a fan allows for longer record times, but if I want “cinema” it’s hard to call it that without 24fps or DCI like other FX models.

This shouldn't be on KZbin it should be on Netflix...(just imagine me saying cinema here but they are closed so...)

I agree, if this was on Netflix or was a part of a series on Netflix I would watch it and I think it would have value there.

Brilliant and refreshing type of review and KZbin video. I hate content being shoved down my throat and it’s nice being able to absorb the information nice and slow like a real convo. Keep up the great work.
