Your low light tests are the best on YT. I was considering zv-e10, a7c and fx30, but after this video I'm debating a7c in aps-c mode vs zv-e10. I was expecting better results from fx30 in low light. It seems it's hard to cheat physics and full frame is still much better.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis

thanks for the super thanks!! The A7C would be the way to go for lowlight for sure 👍
@thesahdstudio

Just curious, why would you use the a7c in aps-c mode, because of your existing lenses? I've done a bunch of testing myself and, like he says in the video the full-frame is just so good. Aps-c can't really touch it in lower light. Light equals color right? *Chants* full-frame full-frame!
@thisvideoisgreat4289

@@thesahdstudio Yep, I have 3 aps-c lenses and plan to expand. They are much cheaper, much lighter, usualy have less focus breathing (especialy f1.4 variants). I don't care about hi-res photos or bokhe. My main concern is video performance. There are 3 cons I can think of: 1. can't punch further in 4k. 2. Bigger noise grain 3. slightly less sharp image because of not downsampling.
@thesahdstudio

@@thisvideoisgreat4289 Out of curiosity what IS the biggest reason stopping you from going full-frame? It seems you like the smaller size/weight, do you do mostly handheld? I just jumped from the A6400 to the A7iv recently and, while it'll take me time to get to where I was lens-wise, I am super happy I made the jump. Plus I was able to sell/buy used so it wasn't as big of a gap as I was worried about.
@thisvideoisgreat4289
@thisvideoisgreat4289 Жыл бұрын
@@thesahdstudio It's mostly about money. Second reason is weight and size. Sony 11 1.8, viltrox 23 1.4, sigma 56 1.4 will cost me about $1200 and 721g. Full frame equivalent lenses are at least x2 cost and x2,5 weight. I don't see value in FF lenses, as I mentioned I don't care about more bokhe. There are compeling reason for me to buy FF body especialy smallest a7c and pairing it with aps-c lenses feels like good compromise.

I just want to say thank you for your awesome videos and sharing your entertaining personality! You have really helped me in my decision to buy The ZV-e10 as my first camera, finally upgrading from my iPhone 13 Pro Max after a year. I'm losing being able to shoot 10 bit via Filmic Pro's Log V3 for better color grading. But the quality of the entire package and building out a rig similar to Lil Dougie for my more professional setup is going to do wonders for my small production. Eventually I want to upgrade to the A7s III/A7 IV or the FX cinema line. One day. Your subscriber count does not match the quality of work you put in. I have another video tomorrow where I do that, but the way I do this test is the best way to see how they do in lowlight because you see how the cameras react under the same lighting. ISO’s are not absolute and vary from camera to camera. But in the test coming, you will see that the fx30 is noisier at every iso than the A7iv. Noticeably so. It’s a great camera, but lowlight is not its strength,

in terms of light - both are 1.4. Depth of field changes - the blurriness of the background (1.4 * 1.5) = 2.1. the focal length of 16mm is 16 * 1.5) = 24mm. but the amount of light stays at 1.4 (the brightness of the image regardless of sensor size). clear as mud? 😀

if you need a workhorse that runs for hours - get the fx30. yes, the A7iv is better in lowlight and a way better photo camera, but in decent light, they are indistinguishable. Question for you Mark. With winter hitting I'm doing a lot more filming in my garage (I do automotive content) with my zv-e10. I shoot in shutter priority. If I'm on a tripod I putt shutter at 60 and vlog I put shutter to 200. I've noticed in the garage though a lot of horizontal striations in the footage. It's worse at higher shutter and better at 60. Is there another setting I can adjust to help this?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
the shutter speed is picking up the pulsing of your lights. because your garage is not using studio lights, you will see this at higher shutter speeds. it’s a form of rolling shutter that you will see. It’s not the camera, it’s the lights. You can try using different bulbs or incandescent ones. Also, try shooting at 24p at 50fps shutter. Just to be clear: if you compare all the cameras using the same lens, the low-light performance shown in this video will not change? Meaning you can save some money. Also meaning that the A7IV's superior low-light performance isn't because it's full frame if it's still superior when cropped.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
full frame vs cropped is not the only factor in lowlight performance. The A7IV is better in lowlight than the FX30 or XV-E10 in full frame and in cropped with the same lenses. It has a better sensor. In crop mode it is closer, but it is still better. I have a video tomorrow that will show that.

wouldn't it be fair to put the full frame (A7IV) on f/2 if you test APS-C (FX30 & ZV-E10) on f/1.4? Otherwise you're giving the FF sensor more light, thus obviously better performance.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
same light hits the sensor at 1.4 on both cameras - but the APSC sensor is smaller. An f1.4 on aps-c is a measurement of light the same as an f1.4 on a full frame. So a full frame does gather more light - but that's simply because of surface area of the sensor. If you compare an image of a 1.4 lens on an aps-c camera to a 1.4 image on a full frame - they would look the same in terms of brightness - but they would have a different amount of perceived background separation because of the crop factor

can you do a test between the fx30 and the a7iv in crop mode and their performance with clear image zoom? imo biggest advantage of fx30 is the ability to use cheaper aspc lenses and the extra reach it offers compared to full frame. considering fx30 has 20mp, while a7iv in crop is about 12mp? the fx30 should be more detailed in 1.5x CIZ. in real world situations it can be very useful to have the fx30 with a 28-75 and get similar reach to a full frame with 70-200 while retaining a sharp image

The FX30 is bad in low light, it's not just the noise, but the noise profile that is not very aesthetic. Without noise reduction it's almost unusable at 2500 in SLOG, that's a bummer. I noticed the same with my FX30. I have an A7SIII and a6300 and the FX30 doesn't feel like much of a step up from the a6300 in terms of low light performance. The FX30 is pretty loaded in terms of features though, and being able to do 4K 30 and probably 60 indefinitely with that internal fan is really what sold me on it over the A7IV. I'm in too many situations, hot rooms, etc. where I need to record for hours at a time and I had an A7IV that kept overheating even with the internal shutoff temp set at high. So “Make Art Now” has a video where he created a PP for low light for the A7III. So using these settings with the ZVE10, against FX30 and A7III (or A7C)would be very interesting for another low light comparison. I mean regarding price range A7III/A7C and Fx30 are pretty close. I did expect Fx30 to hold better at low light (I expected it to have higher ISO values)
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
I addressed that in a video I did with the a7iii - but I really didn't notice any substantial increase in noise performance with Josh's profile vs standard. He basically tweaked the Cine2 profile. The thing to do is to expose a little brighter and crush the shadows - then it will look good. But in this test, I wanted it to be neutral.

As you know I got the ZV-e10 and the kit lens just to start shooting stuff. I then bought the Sigma 30mm f1.4. Someone crashed into my church at 2AM one Friday night and I got the call from the police first. So I grab my Jimmy(ZV-e10) with the 2 lens. I would say that the lighting was about 30% of daylight. The kit lens was not cutting it so I switched to the Sigma 30. Wow it looked so clear and clean it was like I was shooting at 5-6PM. What a fun little camera.

Wow it's funny that the Dougie beats the triple priced fx30 both in low light and colors! Though auto WB would be the last thing to test on a video centric camera I think. Wiah you could set a constant Kelvin for all three. A7iv always looks yellowish to all the other cameras. That's a let down.

Hello Mark, first of all I thank you for all these videos that you make, they are the most complete and have helped me a lot in the last few months. I've decided I'm going to buy the FX30 but I'm new to cinegraphy, I've gained a lot of technical knowledge in the last few months, but I've never held a camera in my hand so I can't get a sense of how things work in practice, for example the field of a lens view, your videos helped me to understand in practice what I need to record a vlog or indoors (thanks again). The last doubt I have is in relation to the performance in low light since it is a considerable part of what I intend to shoot, I am considering the sigma 18-50 which seems to cover all the focal length I need, but the 2.8 aperture leaves me in doubt between this lens or the 1.4 trio, which is a bigger investment and more work because they are prime lenses. Since you have all this equipment, would it be possible for you to make a video comparing these four lenses on the FX30 in low light?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
I can tell you that if you plan to shoot in lowlight, the primes will be the way to go. 1.4 is much brighter than 2.8. check out my video on the apsc lenses in lowlight. 8 have the sigma 16 1.4 and the Tamron is 11-20 in the video is a 2.8. so that will perform the same in lowlights as the sigma 18-50. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqq4qGiAj9efq8k
