It was almost impossible to really tell until the sun/ocean shots! I thought it would be a lot easier to see, but it goes to show that a good post production treatment can make any camera with a 10 but log profile look good! But the highlight rolloff is where no one can touch Blackmagic…it is just SO MUCH SMOOTHER! This is why I’m scared to clip anything on Sony so that I have more highlight to work with. Thankfully shadows recover well, but on my bmpcc I don’t have to worry close to as much!

Understanding the limits of KZbin testing and compression, as you pointed out, it was still an interesting test. I confess that I guessed in a short time which camera was which. BM's image is different. Here at 1:34 I saw that the BM was Cam A. What I found interesting is that the BM seemed sharper to me. Sony even in backlight seems to "create" light 5:37. Sometimes it can be good, sometimes not. Both cameras are excellent. If I could choose, I would choose BM. That's the kind of difference from the BM that I like 7:04. Thanks for the comparative test. I could add to this test the Fuji X-H2S, which seems to be an excellent camera also within this price range.
@BeierFilms8 ай бұрын
As usual with most recent shoot-outs, I'm amazed how similar the images are. I often flip-flopped between which camera I liked more from shot to shot and I could have never picked them apart when matched like this. We really are coming to a place where all cinema cameras are more alike than they are different (at least as far as the general image quality is concerned). It's a start contrast to the early 2010s when you could easily pick out what was shot on an Alexa or a Red. It's also interesting to note that the FX30 is advertised as having an extra stop of dynamic range but it feels like the BMPCC6k handled the sunset better.

If you light and compose properly, the BMPCC6K can hang with nearly any camera under $5-6K. The convenience features are where it's lacking (auto-focus, IBIS, low-light-performance, weight, ergonomics, etc.). It's a cinematographer's camera. The FX30 is a KZbin creator's camera. :)

So I don't know if I made a mistake to buy the Sony's, I bought them when I want to be quick as possible (for run n gun shoots). But I don't know, I don't feel the passion like before when I was shooting with the Blackmagic. I have a simple method for working out which is the blackmagic - I look at the greens. If they're properly green rather than tinted yellow, it's not the black magic. And I really, really wish this wasn't so, because I need a camera for an upcoming green screen shoot, and in every other respect the bmpcc6k is the best camera to choose, but from past experience using the 4.6k Ursa I know that yellow bias will make it so much harder to separate the background from certain paler skin tones; any motion blur and it literally becomes impossible. I know, I've been there tearing my hair out trying to pull a good key. However, this looks a lot better than the old Ursa so it's possible the colour science has improved.

The reason why I use that LUT is because it kinda gives you a very very close starting point. If I had to use the Sony LUT and the BM LUT, you would have think that that was how the cameras looked and it would have been terrible and completely different from each other. Is that fair? I don’t think so. In facts Sony footage with BUTTERY looks like a completely different camera compared to the Sony LUT. That’s the problem. Sometimes people are not aware of this, they trust the manufacturers LUT and they think oh, that’s what the camera is capable of. Doing this I basically show you the best Rec709 conversion possible, but you still see the differences, because there are quite a bit of them, but unfortunately they get lost with gamma shift and KZbin compression.

Black Magic vs FX 30 Cuál escoger?

Thanks for this great comparison! Very useful! Sony always looks digital more than Blackmagic. BM has more cinematic look anyway. Looking forward to seeing next video with your comments!

They are very similar. Not sure what all the Blackmagic guys are seeing to claim there's such a difference. I own both a BMPCC4K and an FX3 and I've never seen any advantage to the Blackmagic besides the excellent menu system.
@matteobertoli Жыл бұрын
If you don’t see a difference between h264 files and 16bit RAW files, I think there is a problem. You also need to know where to look. Not easy to spot many differences on KZbin (even if the roll-off gives it away a couple of times), but if you own both cameras and shot with both and never seen a difference well… 🤷🏻♂️
@renaudguin1700 Жыл бұрын
@@matteobertoli The bmpcc is not 16 bit raw. they didn't told you ? but you can output 16 bit raw from the fx30 if needed matteo. cheers

I own the bmpcc4k and the fx30. The main difference I see is the softer highlight roll off on the pocket cam. I'm still happy with the image I'm getting with the fx30!
@matteobertoli Жыл бұрын
@@renaudguin1700 incorrect. BRAW is stored in 12bit and expanded to 16bit in DaVinci. With that said, there is no way in the world you can tell the difference between 12bit and 16bit, but you can tell the difference between super compressed h264 and prores, that’s for sure.
@matteobertoli Жыл бұрын
@@Victor-Rojas it’s a great camera if you are shooting in an “easy” lighting situation. If you start pushing the dynamic range, the shadows on the fx30 fall completely apart and get mushy and very noisy. Again, there is nothing strange with that, one is a cinema camera that records RAW files, the other one is a mirrorless that records h264. Only thing in common is the price. KZbin is not a good place to judge a camera, but I can tell you that once you open the footage in DaVinci on a 27” monitor, the differences are huge and if you can’t see them, you need to train your eye a little more

Thanks for this... I have a relatively untrained eye but I did think A was slightly better and I did guess B was the FX30. This was great as I am going to change to Sony this year.

I don't understand why BlackMagic is the only company that doesn't lie about dynamic range. so many people pick up cameras because they say 14+ stops then use that as a drawback for buying the pocket because it's 13 stops, but then you look at side-by-side footage and there is not a chance in hell you are getting 14+ stops of usable range out of sony unless you want to pay 10k+.

Love the highlight rolloff on the BMPCC, however this alone does not always make it a more likeable image to me. The rolling shutter gave it away immediately it is just ridiculous on the BMPCC. Would be interesting to know if the highest possible codec/bitrate has been used on both cameras.
@flipnap2112 Жыл бұрын
just a side note on the rolling shutter for the 6k pro. I found out something quite by surprise, the gyro stabilization in resolve removes most of the rolling shutter. I rarely ever use stabilization in resolve because I try to nail it in camera but just experimented and wanted to see what gyro stab looked like. I went out and purposely gave a lot of micro shakes. almost no rolling shutter. although you have to shoot high frame rate to avoid motion blur artifacts after stabilized. Then to get true MB back go into fusion and use two nodes.. optical flow and then vector motion blur. its a perfect solution.

Both look great. The main difference that I noticed was the skin tones and I would still pick the Pocket solely for that reason. I noticed the magenta tone in the skin and that’s case with Sony cam’s ever since they fixed those ugly green/yellow tones. The Pocket has the green tint that I prefer and it doesn’t look weird. Other than that I noticed the DR was slightly wider with the FX30 so that was another giveaway for me.

If you look closely at the sunset shots it's obvious the BM 6K handles highlights way better. It's a bit hard to tell with whats happing in the shadows with youtube compression but I suspect in a controlled technical test the BM 6K will rate better for dynamic range.

Beautiful footage, excellent comparison. I guess I should be pleased that I preferred my camera (A) and not the camera I don't have 😅 I really was unsure which would be which, so this was exciting! And also, it seems like BM is leaning more to green, and Sony to magenta, maybe? And gamma curve a bit different. It would be interesting to see if they would be matched, would there be a huge difference. Also, BM seems to be way sharper. And do the CODECs play any role in this? Thanks, keep up the excellent work!
