🎥 Sony FX6 vs Varicam LT | Part 1 🎥 Cinematic 4K

The highlight roll off and the rendering of color was a dead giveaway for that first piece of wardrobe. The Sony had that sharp video look in that comparison. The others with the solid colored wardrobe was close but again the highlights are softer with the Varicam LT IMO.

Yes sir. 1) The Varicam still has more color data in those highlights if I pull them down. And also I feel the Panasonic has a more rich palette, but I was able to dial in the Sony. 2) The Sony is very sharp, but that might be the GMaster lenses (maybe diffusion could soften a little bit). But I'd say that the Sigma's are also very sharp and contrasty, which is why I chose them. But still VERY sharp in a way that I feel wouldn't feel good on skin. Maybe using a little blur could soften up the Sony. I didn't try to match that aesthetic. But if I was a full time Sony shooter I would experiment with that. 3) The Sony was also showing some moire on a natural fiber blazer I tested. I shot the same blazer with the Varicam a few days before this, so I didn't reshoot it, and didn't add it to the test video because lighting was different. But I was surprised there was moire on a natural fiber garment. But all in all, I prefer the Sony FX6 over the Komodo. At least FX6 feels close to Panasonic, Komodo was lacking tonal gradation or something. Very different look. Sony is a good B-Camera but not a replacement for Varicam. Thanks for watching bro! This is just what I was looking! I think they both looked very good, sometimes I like A more sometimes B. What's your thoughts on these cameras?

Hey thanks for watching. I'm a long time Panasonic fan and I actually like the Sony a lot. It is way better than the Komodo which I also owned and tested. I'd say that the Varicam has a softer color rendering (it has a larger color gamut which means more crayons in the box) and can be equally as sharp as the 6k Sony. I will have to test on skin tones to see which I prefer, as that is the most important thing. Varicam has a very unique look in certain situations that even an Alexa can't beat. The sony has a lot of other tools that make it impressive, especially the Autofocus. However the G Master lenses are very clinical and sharp... I haven't tested the dual iso function on the Sony yet, but I'd say that Panasonic seems to be the master at that even compared to the Gemini and Venice. Varicam 800 and 5000ISO being identical with just a little more noise. However the Sony being 6K downsampled to 4k might help in noise reduction. FYI, Red cameras are intended to be shot at high resolution and then down sampled to 4k to add more DR, so not sure if Sony is doing this as well. Testing soon. I'd say the Varicam also has a touch more dynamic range and color fidelity in the highlights and shadows, and the 'noise' out of the varicam when desaturated in resolve is roughly the same size as 35mm film which adds to the vibe. And the anti-alias filter on the Varicam can handle very fine patterns without moire. I saw some moire on Sony shooting a shirt with a fine pattern. This test was more about could I get the Sony too match the Varicam, which I think it does pretty well. Let me know if you want to see anything in particular. More to come! Hope you subscribe :)

@@AlexDerrick_DP Appreciate your thorough response, you have my sub. It’s interesting to hear, I wasn’t expecting it to do better than the Komodo. It has some great tools but I never cared about autofocus really. Interesting to hear your thoughts about it compared to the Alexa too, would love to know more. I’ve heard some other people absolutely praise the Varicam and it’s a shame that this camera is so underrated because I find it hard to find good footage of this camera. In my experience with S-log3 on mirrorless cameras (my experience with the FX6 was short) is that it doesn’t handle mixed lighting as good as V-log and that the rollof into the shadows is less pleasing. So it’d be interesting to see if the Fx6 is better i that regard and how it handles skintones and DR for sure.

@@Aviciiz I don't own any Sony lenses, all lenses I have are manual focused. So not sure if that is a good feature for me. But camera package I got had some lenses and I tested it and liked it. 😛

varicam has a lot of tones of magenta . Not sure i like it

Hmm.. I did not use IR Cut filter on the Varicam. Without IR filtration Varicam has warm tonality. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX-bk4xuds6Unrs FYI -- First flannel shirt does have a purple tint that the Sony does not register at all.
