Great video Julia Trotti! Definitely the best three 50mm lenses to get are not Sigma Art 50mm F1.4, Sony GM 50mm F/1.2 and now this GM 50mm F1.4. I don't even recommend the Zeiss 50mm at all as that lens is too outdated and too slow. It was great for its times back in 2014 but today, its just not worth the price tag. I'm looking forward to picking up this cheaper alternative 50mm F1.4 as i do not care too much about having F1.2. Yes, the bokeh will be even more creamier, but i rarely capture photographs or videos at F1.2.

Great review as always Julia. This new GM looks great but it's refreshing to also see the bad points of this lens as well as not trashing the Zeiss, as many others have here in their reviews of this new GM, & recent Sigma 50mm.

always good to have more lens options! I'm glad 50's are making a bit of a comeback, as I feel like that focal length fell out of popularity until not too long ago. These photos are great, and Olya crushed the model game. I like that her hair played a role in pushing the lens further, which was nice to see examples of. Shame about video stuff, but it looked great and not super noticeable in the provided clips. I personally won't be making any leaps towards this lens, as I'm sticking with my Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 that's honestly still really really incredible, and I feel is a great, less expensive alternative to this guy. It doesn't have the aperture ring... or any buttons on it, so usability can be tricky in some situations, but it's still a beast.

For a 50, 35 and 85, f/1.4 is certainly the sweet-spot. For a 135, f/2 is the sweet-spot. Pushing f/1.2 in the 35/50/85 and f/1.8 in the 135 is more showing off than for any real benefit, IMHO.

Hi Julia! I have watched several of your portrait videos (as well as others, to be honest), and I am missing one very important aspect to shooting portraits at such a wide aperature. That is, HOW do you get all of your subject in focus, and not just their eyes, or whatever body part is closest to the lens?! I have struggled with this! When shooting this wide, what focus area setting do you use? Im am guessing that is the aspect no one mentions. Thanks Julia!
@taylorhickman84 Жыл бұрын
If you are shooting @ 1.4, I believe the best way to increase the DOF would be to back away from your subject.

Love your reviews, they play a key role in my lens selection process. In close ups the difference between this lens and the GM f1.2 is marginal. However, I would've liked to have seen more full body images. Perhaps in a future comparison of this lens with its competition we can see as many full body images as close ups.

Hi, Julia! Thank you for your videos, love them watching! Can I ask you something (like a creamy bokeh-loving person 😊)? I have this question (an idea) stuck in my head, that I can't answer for myself even after watching dozens of lens reviews on KZbin 😅: what if i could skip 85mm f/1.4 lens and go instead in crop mode on A7RV with 50mm f1.2 gm and have same creamy-creamy bokeh (one lens working for two strategy😎)? How would the images look like at 75mm from 50mm lens in crop mode compared to a normal ones in full mode from 85 mm f1.4 lens? And also would be the 1.2 50mm gm lens much better in this case than the 1.4 50mm gm or not (especially for outdoors nature shooting, where the background is to busy when it is not a headshot)? Should I go with a heavier and more expensive 50mm 1.2 gm lens for these two reasons or the 1.4 gm would be doing same good job as 1.2 and I'll barely see the difference between them? Would be so grateful if you could answer and say your opinion on this (or even show in a short video maybe)! Thank you in advance ❤!

I think allot of people are asking themselves if its worth paying an extra $450 dollars for this new GM over the just announced Sigma 50f1.4 Art lens that is just as good but weighs 144 grams more. Is the weight savings worth 450 dollars. And then another group of people are asking themselves if paying another $700 dollars to get the 50 f1.2 gm over the 50 f1.4 gm. For the slightest bit more blur and nicer boke balls. I saw a video showing the f1.2 shot at f1.4 and the bokhe balls were rounder then the 1.4 gm at f1.4. But the f1.2 is also 280 g heavier. So you reallly have to weigh your budget vs your priorities or wants. But any of the three lenses i mentioned are great glass. But there is a big difference between 850 and 1300 or 2000 dollars for very close to equal image quality.

Exactly. I have the 24mm/85mm combo and I want a great 50mm so I can use a lot and leave the 85mm 1.4 sigma at home (have the riv so the crop is a valid option). Very difficult to justify the price differences but still havenˋT decided :)

I wish they would have made this SMALLER. I am at a point in my life when the money doesn't matter and I can buy whatever I like as far as this sort of gear goes. However, size and weight matters. It is just a HUGE step from the 1.8/55 to the 1.4/50. In fact, the 1.4/50 is not much smaller than the 1.2/50. I know that Sony is trying to replace all the ZA offerings with G/GM offerings. I really wish they had made the 1.4 about the size of the 1.8/55 length and barrel size wise, perhaps with a 55 filter instead of the 49mm. With the 1.4 being they way it is, I am packing the 55.
