I’m apparently one of the few who was able to get this system the week it was released. Bottom line - truly fantastic. A completely satisfying experience. Integration with center speaker on my A80J required a few adjustments on the TV but after doing so it was nearly perfect. I eventually got the subwoofer which made it even better! As for drop outs, I had a few, but that was fixed by pointing my router antennas away from the system. I’m so glad I’m not on some waiting list right now. Thanks for this great review.

I'm one of those patiently waiting on many lists. I have the A80J and been binge watching youtube reviews for the HT-A9, a couple of reviewers I trust mentioned that using the TV as the center channel through the cable made it worse, some said the speakers and the TV speaker are not acoustically matched. I supposed this is one of those personal tastes thing, but I'm wondering if you can expound on the adjustments you made.

$1800 isn’t bad considering it’s a surround system. No AV receiver needed, no prior AV knowledge or research, and wireless design means no fussing with speaker cables nor the ridiculous debate surrounding them. Unless the sub is astounding better off buying a different sub, like dual SVS PB-1000 pros and adding their wireless sub accessory. Curious to see how the review goes and if still think $1,800 is reasonable. Update post video: Being locked into the 2 Sony subs makes the $1800 less reasonable. But the auto calibration is pretty cool for people who have no desire to calibrate nor pay someone to calibrate. In that regard it’s not bad for someone who has the means and values convenience.

I would really like to have the sub for the impact it brings, but this gives me great sound without the booming bass effects. I’ve got mine hooked up to the 83A90J as the Center. It really is fantastic. With the screen that size and the Acoustic Surface audio of the A90J, you can often hear the dialogue localised to the character who is talking. Plus compared to Klipsch and some others , it handles DTS. So if you’ve got a disc collection of any size DTS is a must. I paired it with my Sony A90J and I have to say that this is a really good system. The surround sound is amazing, even if my room has a huge gap on the left you can somehow listen to a phantom left speaker, the voice clarity is amazing too, you can lower your volume but still listen to voices and all the effects. I'm planning to buy the big subwoofer in the next months to complete the setup, but for me that I never had a home theater in my life the amount of bass provided by the HT-A9 itself is really good, I can't imagine with the sub. Another HUGE deal breaker for me compared to the A7000 or A5000 soundbar is the fact that there is no soundbar at all, i can leave my tv on his legs and avoid to put up a wall stand, only 4 speaker and no cables, amazing.

Hi Caleb, I want to connect a Soundbar/Sony HT-A9 which has a hdmi input signal from a Fire stick/tv box/game console and pass through 4k HDR video via hdmi e-arc/arc output(thru soundbar/HT) to a 4k Monitor which has hdmi 2.0 input, is this connection possible and will the 4k Monitor works and function similar to a TV hdmi e-arc/arc input? I am asking this question to everyone and see if this setup is possible, apparently nobody talks about it, please kindly help.

Great Review, I just subscribed to your channel, I just got few days ago the Sony A80J 77'' I'm happy that this tv is going to be a good center channel for my future HT-A9 speciality that I have many blu-rays movies with DTS audio,.

Have you reviewed the Samsung HW-950a? Seems like a lot of reviewers have this as the best atmos and it’s on sale for $1299 right now.

BASE ADJUSTMENT ON The remote is NICE. However I agree their meds to be height adjustment as I’m going to put many of my surround speakers in the ceiling.

Does anyone know if you can connect a regular center speaker (not a Sony tv) to the HTA9? I figure with that being the biggest concern and not having a Sony tv myself, it might be a good idea to just get one to add along with the sub. Just not sure if you’re able to do this.

Excellent review, this is perfect with a projector to prevent hdmi wire between the back projector and the front speakers as the source box can be close to the projector sources.

As good as the system is supposed to sound I haven’t listen to it so I can’t pass judgment. In the past when I’ve experimented with other high end systems if they are missing a dedicated center channel speaker, I find that I have issues with dialogue and I’m sorry to say that that would probably be the case for me with this system. Sound bars with dedicated center channel speaker‘s tend to be clearer on the vocals especially when watching movies and the soundtracks of the special effects overwhelm speech. Glad you mentioned that the tv itself A90J could be used as a center channel speaker, now it might be worth considering, since I own that model.

I’ve seen reviews where they said the system sound better, without the tv as center Chanel.

I wish they came in in a darker color. No idea why they chose grey/white as the only available. Even Apple doesn't do all white anymore....

I had seen a review on this system before so I didn't answer the first question, but your last question...I do not have $2,500 for a sound system, I just don't and I probably never will, but I LOVE movies. I want a home theater experience. I'm doing the best I can with thrift store finds. To get back to the question, would I pay that price if I could afford it...yes, absolutely, but it wouldn't be double the price of the TV, because I would also get a 70+ inch OLED. If I could do all this with only 5 speakers I can put anywhere so that my wife doesn't freak out because I bought a $1000+ receiver and a 12 speaker system...well, I guess my point is, to get atmos takes a lot of components and yeah $2500 seems like a lot, but is it really, when you consider how much it would cost to buy it one component at a time? I mean, seriously, do the math. Where are you going to get a complete 7.1.4 system for less money? If all of our bills were miraculously paid and I had $5.000 left over I could just play with...well, lets be honest, I'd buy my wife a car, but after that if I still had $5,000 I would get a huge OLED TV and the HT-A9 and the subwoofer and be completely done in a single step and my wife would still be pretty happy because the theater room wouldn't have speakers everywhere, that look like...speakers. Anyway, yeah, if I could afford it, I think the HT-A9 is definitely the way I would go...but that will almost certainly never happen to me. movie-phile dreams on a thrift store budget.

Great Review (as always) Caleb. I've been fascinated to say the least with the SONY HT-A9 ever since I've heard/read all the reviews up to yours. I just wish I had the bucks for it. LOL As of now, I'm still being content with my NAKAMICHI ShockWafe Pro. Which I've had for over a year now. But will step up eventually. I will say that I'm at a point in my life in which I've started to "critically" listen to Music again. Especially Jazz. So I can see myself spending double for audio over a display. Though it's been great to watch movies at home due to COVID-19 issues. Especially since we are still on a Vaccine Mandate here in NYC.

WOW. Okay these are way bigger than I thought based all other precious videos and photos. Need to give more thought to color. Unfortunately doesn’t seem that you can have a different color for the front and rears, sadly. Still pretty sure this will be replacing my aging Yamaha YSP-5600; which Yamaha hasn’t bothered to replace in over HALF A DECADE!

Would you be able to do a review of those KEF speakers or an SVS Subwoofer? Overall, I still feel like separate loudspeakers and a powered sub, with receiver, would be the better bang for the buck. Especially if those 4 speakers cost $1800 USD.

I spend money on my video equipment (Z9D,A9G, Sony 885ES pj) & I expect to spend more on the audio, high end products costs but they last long and the experience is very nice. I like what Sony did with Sony HT-A9, minimalististic, large sound field, flexibility in placement of speakers. I will definitely get the Sony HT-A9 with Sony SW5 subwoofer, I still will have a huge system for my home theater but I like the fact I can get a high end audio experience with minimum wires & no large receiver in a smaller area than a home theater room, thanks for a solid review on Sony HT-A9 Caleb, take care!

How does this compare to WISA systems like the enclave cinehome options or the Monaco 5.1? Obviously those don't have Atmos, but seem to use a similar wireless technology.

Hello Dear Caleb!! Happy new year 2023. Thank you for all your great videos to help us make purchase decision. I wanted to know what home theather system you recommend for a high ceiling living room (around 40 Square Meters). In interested in floor standing speakers like the two white ones in your videos. Thank in advance

One big limitation I see is that even with SW500, I am not able to pump up all the wattage at 80% volume. I have many songs with good lower base, and i am also using the equaliser in the Amazon music to max the base. But even then, I can see max 30% utilisation of the woofer. I think in the next firmware update, the amplification factor for the base should be increased by 3x.

Thanks for the review :) I was wanting a dedicated surround system but for what I’m looking for it’s a bit pricey. This is a good option for me and I think my wife would like this better too because it wouldn’t make our living space cluttered.

Is the Sony HT-A9 the system where you can put the speakers pretty much wherever you like and the signal processing takes care of compensating? If so then that is a BIG plus in the 'Wife Factor' for system. I'm sure there are some limitations on placement but if it allows enough flexibility, and Sony stresses that in their advertising, then no matter the price, it's going to make things a lot easier putting the system in at a home where your partner doesn't like big tower speakers, racks of electronics, or wires all over the place. Does anyone agree? I'd love to see a married reviewer take this system home, TV too, and set it up, with his partner and get their opinion of esthetics, ease of setup and use.

Yes it does. You should have no extra marital issues with this system.

Ease of set up: 5 out of 5; I have these in a mid size bedroom and the speakers seemed a little larger than anticipated. They are about the size of a normal bookshelf speaker. If I would put them in the family room, size would be no issue. I have them in the usual spots:fronts- on the entertainment center and rears in back on nightstands. You can put them anywhere as long as placed 2 in the front area and 2 in the back area. Wife seems ok with them. She is pretty easy going though.
