Hi Chinacane and thanks for the comments! 1. yes, but then it would not flip 180 degrees easily. it would need a full double hinge design for that or something else I guess. 2. really? The whole camera is small and the screen is about 80% of the back. The do make a Monitor that is much larger, but it's about $400 US. 3. I think it's great honestly. I have not tried the Olympus, but the Fujifilm X-Pro1 had a optical/ evf that was not very good compared to the Sony in my opinion. Jay

The Nex-6 does have some advantages over the Nex-5r, but if you only need the viewfinder occasionally, it's a significantly smaller and lighter camera body. The 180 flip screen is also a huge advantage for self recording videos ect.. So, to your point it may not be worth upgrading to the Nex-6 just for the built in viewfinder if you want t eh smaller camera and flip screen advantage ;)

I have not had any issue going through mutiple batteries using 60fps video. That should produce the most heat. Mind you, I was not outside in the sun either. I was inside at my kitched table doing the tests. The camera did get noticeable warm after the 3rd battery.

Deni already answered correctly, but I usually just leave it on. For the sharpest shot possible when using a tri-pod it should be turned off though. It really doesn't seem to make a difference with the sharpness though. On some Canon lenses you must turn it off when using a tri-pod or the shots come out soft. not the case with Sony as far as I can tell.

I get what you mean. I swapped my nex 6 to nex 5r. But now, i'm having a hard time choosing a5100 because it lacks control that 5r used to have. 5r is the best definition of a travel camera (for me), and nothing can replace it so far.

Occasionally I will have focus issues on certain objects, yes. I do exactly as you and this is normal. The hybrid af makes it much faster, not more accurate ;)

Thanks for the comments and thoughts Marijn!! Great point about the touch screen advantage, but I still don't like using it on the camera overall. Fr that particular task, the touchscreen is awesome, no question. Years of using manual mode, I simple prefer the buttons and non accidental pressing which seems to happen when I have the screen on. I'm sure I could get used to it with time, but it's just my personal preference ;) Lens cap over screen? Thanks again, Jay

Im not camera savvy at all soooo....Ques: would I have more, and less expensive, f2.8 options if I went to an A-mount lens on my newly acquired NEX 5t? I currently have the 3.5f kit lens, but my indoor shots are always dark. (I don't have $500 for the Sigma f2.8 18/50 E-mount lens).

If you have to buy an external viewfinder for the NEX-5R, it's cheaper to just upgrade to the NEX-6 which has the viewfinder integrated to the body and also get a dedicated mode dial on top!

Hi Jay, is there any difference in nex5r and 6 wrt manual control and specifications of these cameras. I know the physical differences like flash, evf etc. I want to know if some features are missing on the inside on 5r. I'm short on budget and so planning to get nex5r and a decent lens. Would you recommend a 50mm or a 35mm prime and why? and/or any other good lens with decent price.

Hi Jay. I find my 5R sometimes refuses to focus on objects that are within a metre from me. So I have to turn the lens away where it refocuses and then pan back to the object which will then be in focus. I thought the upgraded contrast and phase detection would have removed problems like this. Have you experienced any focusing issues with the 5R?

hello Sir Jay just a question i'm a NEX5 user and i've been using it for quite a while now mainly for event coverage(both video and photo) and i see that it lacks a few things like mic input and video quality options (framerates) would u recommend me to get a 5r or a NEX6 for a primary camera? or just get a common DSLR?.. But i'm also thinking convenience and quality of the NEX systems over a full-packed but not that much convenient to use bulky DSLR?..

Hello Bianca, The NEx-5r is a better camera. It has significantly better build quality and refined design. It also has the better sensor with built in Phase Detection Auto Focus which is huge!! Image quality wise they are very close in quality though ;) Your paying for features and build quality with the Nex-5r, but it's worth the extra cash in my opinion. Although the crazy bundle deals for the Nex-f3 are hard to resist!! Again, image quality is about the same. Hope that helps!

Hi Mike Hoeflich You need to press the bottom of the control ring on the back of the camera with your thumb. That brings up the exposure comp. It's the +/- symbol in a square shape.

I had a bunch of those old Nikon lenses and bought that adaptor fon my Nex-5r I guess the older lenses don't have that great coating that the new ones have or something, those old and once expensive lenses really underperformed the pics I took with them looked like crap.

Well,., they made good old lenses and cheap old lenses. I have used a few of both and the good ones are amazing still in my opinion, Not as sharp in the corners, and lens coatings are not as good for sure, but overall a lot of fun, crazy sharp, and killer bokeh on the fast lenses. For example I have the Minolta MC 50mm f/1.4 Rokker-X Lens and love it!

You should get used to it if you plan on using a interchangeable lens camera!! Imagine having to change your lens outside in the field, and not inside!! The sensor has a layer of glass in front of it that can be cleaned, so it's not as big of a deal as you may think ;) Jay

Any of these lenses will work www.sonyalphalab.com/guides/e-mount-lens-guides/ but your camera has an APS-C sized sensor, so you can use either APS-C E-Mount lenses or full frame E-Mount lenses. The APS-C e-mount lenses are optimized for your sensor size, so they tend to be cheaper and lighter weight compared to the full frame e-mount lenses.

The extra dial, better focus (phase detection) and wi-fi are great. But you don't like the touch screen?! Lol, you should really consider using it for putting the flexible spot in place in a fraction of a second! Two more points: the port on top is really not flexible, since it's only made for a few overpriced Sony components. Fortunately others are making stuff for it as well. And I think putting a lens cap over the screen is way more efficient and better priced than that Sony viewfinder.

The NEX series also have an anti-static layer that is harder to attract dust. I do own a NEX-5 and I have owned a dslr, what I was trying to say is that the amount the sensor was exposed was too long and there's a method in changing lenses. Keeping the camera facing down for example. Also, I'd rather be more careful about changing lenses than have the sensor cleaned every now and then :/
