If you still have that lens you should have it repaired or replaced. It is not supposed to slide when you point it downward. The one I have stays rock steady at any zoom position.

i know they both can take raw files but still its primary focus is as a video camera

My VG20 is coming July 25th and I'm sick thinking of paying for it. But excited to get it - except for one thing...NO ONE ELSE showed the "lens creep" in any other reviews for the VG20. Glad you warned me. Well, once it's paid for I suppose I'll be looking at additional glass.

You will want to shoot at 60 frames per second, and a high shutter speed if possible. This will give you more frames to work with while editing and make your slow-mo footage much smoother!

Great review. What is the forward/rear balance like when setup on a tripod. Is it nose heavy?

they designed the vg20 for video, if it was gonna be used for photography more than video they wouldn't have made it into a camcorder, i have both the 5n and the vg20

One thing i would like to not guys is that my NEX-7 video files will not show up in iOS iMovie which im assuming would be the same case for the VG20. My old Canon 60D files would load up in iMovie for iPad no problem. Something to think about if your a Mobile editor.

Here is the lowdown on VG20. 5N has no sound input. It overheats. Footage in low light is grainy. The VG 20 gives you amazing quality, long battery life, interchangeable lenses, and Dolby surround sound. Whatever limitations you find can probably be overcome by getting a better lens. Not as many controls as a Canon DSLR with Magic Lantern, but sufficient to do the job. Clean HDMI output so you can record uncompressed to a hard drive. Show me a better interchangeable lens camcorder at this price.

My staff and I use the ATG SONY NEX-FS700 & Sony NEX-VG20 with ATG Adapter with the ATG Canon EF200-400/2.8L IS with built-in Extender for shooting still in sports and wildlife. With this model my focal ranges: ATG EF320-640mm/2.8L ATG EF448-896mm/3.92L with Extender engaged We are using these at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Still & video are much better than Canon EOS-1D X and Nikon D4.

Also the 5n's purpose is to take great pictures and the video mode is an extra and the vg20's purpose is to take amazing video and the photo mode is an extra.

and the vg20 is more for videographers and filmmakers ,people that need camcorders for their line of work, and again they have completely different purposes.

Just go with two Canon Rebel T4i and ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems. They would be a better choice. You'll be getting AF faster & many lenses. After 25 minutes of shooting just switch camera. Many are using video monitor ($350.00) that is being attached to the camera's hotshoe. And tethered with a cable. Then come UHF mic & lav. They are not cheap. But the advanced & pros are using it wirelessly.

Hi there all, i bought the Sony NEX VG20 after looking previews all over the internet. Now i have one and find out some things i didn't read about. The contact noises while turning de zoom or diaphragm, are hopeless, the noise-sound, when everything is quiet, is disturbing hopeless too and I 'm really disappointed about this. These things has to be clear for Sony to do something about it and anyone who wants to buy one. Robert / Holland

No photographer would buy this for the stills capability, they probably lean towards the dslr, this is a camcorder, videocamera, primarily used for video, this is more appealing for the low budget filmmaker. And the video of this camera is way better than a lower end dslr much like the canon t2i and t3i.

With the camera personally using it i would put the video above average, you could make it seem like your using a 10,000 camera.
